Even though I'd LOVE to own a car like that because I loved James Dean's car R.I.P. Jimmy, I'm sorry but for 4 mill I'd much rather pay off my bills, help other poor people including fam and buy my own dream home as well as a brand new sports car. But that much just for ONE car? Nah! It's only for the MEGA rich! I think James Dean's Porsche was only $7,000 in '55! And now look how much one costs today! Unreal!! Jimmy would freak out if he knew that now days! :) Such a cute sexy little car!

I'd like to see an all aluminum vintage styled fiat 500 with the modern fiat 500 I2 engine. I imagine it would probably weigh in less than the 1100LB original stock weight, even with the larger engine. The mileage should be phenomenal, unfortunately I don't think the modern I2 is available in the US. It would probably perform good as well.

I am in the preliminary stages of figuring out the best fit 550, I want to begin with a "STOCK-ish" set up then I think mod it into something with an STi engine, AWD, 5 speed clutch tranny. I am a former owner of the original 1956 550-1500 RS Porsche Spyder # 90....recently being offered for auction on the www. The only change that I can see and that I don't agree with is the color of the rear fender striping. It is Blue, not red, on the original. My mate, Fred Sebald, also built a Beck's fiberglass replica car using all our original photos of the original # 90. Check out the recent auction pages for the sale of the 550 #90, of Vijay Mallya's collection for yourself and for more history. Gail Patricia Bauderer-Sebald......
@earthwinds8 жыл бұрын
Hi Gail: Many thanks for your input. So great to hear from a name I've seen written in the historical Spyder record for years. Our family used to own 550-0053, some 20 years ago, as well. We have used 0090 as our chosen model for the SHAPE of our cars. We do agree that (yours) and Mr. Mallya's 550-0090 does indeed have blue spears on the clamshell fenders. Our re-creation decisions were laser-focused on the actual BUILD differences on later cars (high-rail 550's from 0076 thru your car) vs. early low-rail cars (0016-0075) but not the so-called prototypes 01-15. Many spyder experts deal with the minor to major differences from build to build. We were forced to include all of this information when building our cars. Yes, our cars are made from a 3D model and then a buck of Vijay's 0090. So our shape is as close to exact as we could muster. (The 3D model even shows minor blemishes on this still- unrestored stunner of a Spyder.) When it comes to fitment of mechanicals we offer original 4CAM engines, as 0090 has, plus a 356 push rod alternative. Similarly we offer many color choices. Our HOPE is to remain within the original 4 Porsche 550 Spyder body-color options but original cars had many choices for spear color, red, blue, white, black, none! with or without the gold leaf hand applied pinstripe border. If you would like to chat more, send me an email directly rob@550spyder.net I would be pleased to speak with you. Rob Edwards

Thanks for the reply. The choice of the Red color on the clam shell rear fenders...and the # 130 on your very special "Tribute 550 RS S pyder" remind me of a photo that I have of James Dean at a L.A. gas station stop...before he was accidentally killed in his car. Some of my own photos are being shared on the www for the "Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale.....to take place on Sept. 11, 2016.....The 9-11 date is also my mate, Fred's, date of birth...and 911 is still my favorite model of the Porsche car owned by our family. My Best to You...beautiful work!

You make a nice car...but a little more respect would do you well. Chuck Beck does a very nice car...most still on the road and youre kinda saying Porsche didn't know what they were doing with glassfibre. All of these Porsches I mentioned made of fibreglass were all winners.

Oh come on! Really? You don't like the hood? You don't like the door? It is, after all, the second evolution of a hand made object. Me thinks the lady doth protest too much! Do you dislike Van Gogh for those annoying brushmarks? Or despise Picasso for his childishness? And Jackson Pollock for being too abstract? Who are we to judge the art and thus the artist? What great works have we brought forward? Dies ist ein bemerkenswertes Kunstwerk. Das ist der Hammer!!!
@s00p3rman5 жыл бұрын
Probably wouldn't be interested in the original thing then. ALL hand made aluminum bodies have uneven panel gaps. The cold working of the aluminum is inconsistent due to the panels being hand hammered over a wooden buck and welded/riveted together As the metal expands and contracts with the weather the gaps spread and shrink unevenly. If you want it even you have to stamp the panels out and bold it together. The 356 is the same way and perfect originals look pretty rough.
