I bought Transformer in 1972. i was the only one in my high school to do so. Beck does a great job here. So much so that I think it may be better than the original. I think Bowie put too much of himself into the original's production. There are flutes to add whimsy, Bowie's own loud piano playing, and at the end, his background solo chorus flares up louder than Lou's main vocals were. I know Bowie is now this deity, but I wonder how Lou felt about the production. I know that Mott the Hoople felt he mixed the drums mixed the drums way too low on their "All the Young Dudes" album.

I always thought Lou's version was such a sweet song. Beck's attempt was lackluster, I listened twice. But not ten minutes later, when trying to remember it, I couldn't Translation - Neils version is superior. I realize Beck was not out to steamroll over the original, but it could have had more punch. Some artists when covering another band's work. It can be destroyed. (Think Limp Bizkit, not once but twice! The Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes' then George Michael's 'Faith' Ohhh Fuck why? Soo Bad, so pitiful. Shame on them!). Conversely artists can make covers fantastic, in some cases as good or even better than the original. Hear these underground artists versions - Elephant Stone's version of LA Woman by The Doors, next. Plz give Kierla Dust's version of 'The Chain ' by Fleetwood Mac a listen. it works for both songs. Then there are some which should have been left along as the latest version is pitiful, a WTF moment. Ok I'll sign off with 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' covered by William Shatner, I shit you not. Canuck Bill went through a quaalude addiction, this is the result. Tee Hee just kidding. Thoughts? u

I appreciate the respect for a fallen giant, but not a very good rendition in my opinion. Personally, the pacing is odd and the back-up vocals are grating. Actually, all the vocals are grating. I'm a Beck fan, but I can't say I like this.
