I wanna give a big applause to the musicians of Flaming Lips, especially their keyboardist / guitarist who nailed every instrumental part and backup vocals in Beck's songs. He also played it in his own style not always the album version. Very cool. Also, I loved the jam at the end of "Sissyneck" SWEEET!

Sea Change came out right in the midst of my first, and last divorce. I had it on reserve as I had feverishly waited for each since Mellow Gold. I had no clue what I was in store for. Fully prepped for some uplifting funky weird salad, instead my first listen on a solo road trip through four states, my guts were eviscerated . Today is the first time I could finally bring myself to listen, as a soon to be mid-century man. It hits different , a genius, with a broken heart, bravely sitting in his pain and processing it maturely, to accept and broadcast to the world some accountability, is fu#*ing courageous.

@@bryancole2447 How so? First, I've never seen anyone rate Beck's (or most singers) vocals, so how can anyone possibly say that his vocals are "underappreciated", never mind "criminally underapprecaited"? It's simply a silly throwaway statement. For what it's worth (and it ain't worth much!), my opinion is that Beck has a really nice tone to his voice. No super big range, no overwhelming power or amazing control, nothing that most other singers couldn't do, but, still, a really nice voice. Apart from the freaks of nature like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and George Michaels, almost all professional singers just have really nice voices and we like to listen to them. It's not a competition (apart from The Voice and Idol....lol). It's just singing.
@lerkison
@lerkison 6 ай бұрын
@@squirrelbutler2119 Beck's voice is great largely because of the emotional depth and honesty he sings with. (Bob Dylan is perhaps the ultimate example of this.) Carey, Houston, and Michaels, while technically impressive, sang in a mostly fake manner, and so I don't consider them superior vocalists.

@Jayswizzle: I saw Beck live about 4 or 5 times between 1992 &1994 when he was just drifting around the LA club scene. He always had a folk/country blues influence among his other influences. I recall him doing a "Woody Guthrie" inspired folk/rap tune at Toe's Tavern in Pasadena circa 1993. He wasn't even on the official bill...he just did a few songs in between sets. I do not recall the song but I distinctly remember him paying homage to Woody Guthrie before he started the song.
