How rare it is to have a connected album from start to finish these days - when albums were your friends and you'd spend the night on the floor with them, the vinyl, and a sleeve of liner notes.

This album reminds me why I fell in love with The Flaming Lips in the first place when I first heard The Soft Bulletin. The combination of sadness and euphoria communicated through psychedelic rock is something they do incredibly well. This late in the band's career, this is one of their best albums.

This album stands up to the classics of any era...and despite the sonic references to the past...the retrospection... and sense of social distance of the band and audience in their own bubbles is the perfect image of contemporary pandemic humanity.
@powerplantplanetuniverse59453 жыл бұрын
Sigh. An adorable album. What a bunch of songwriters, romantics and evergreen cotton brainers! I looove it! Beatlesque and very psychedelic, beautiful melodies all over. I thought AIR were the first with this retro style...but the flaming lips are, in reality, as it seems! Were a nice band and still are. Sounds as George Harrison played the gutitar, wow! How can someone dislike...its great! 😂😉🤩😎✊🤷♂️💁♂️🙆♂️

I first learned about Flaming Lips when I saw them open up for Lush, spring '92, at the Palace in L.A. I was right in front of Wayne, and I remember that he used a toy lazer gun as an instrument, and that a lot of the songs were fun and catchy, but they didn't really cling on to me. And I wasn't exactly a fan of that tangerine song. However, about 12 years ago, I went recording shopping with a new friend. He agreed to buy Felt if I bought Soft Bulletin, and I have been impressed by Flaming Lips ever since. I think they are ridiculously talented; just their cover of the first Stone Roses album is jaw-droppingly impressive. But all the records that they have been releasing on Bella Union are breathtaking creative, not just because of their musicianship, but that after so many years of recording music, Flaming Lips does not seem to run out of ideas. They do not repeat themselves, or rely on comfortable musical crutches. They innovate and innovate and innovate. Flaming Lips has my respect and admiration and much more.

Discovered this by accident. The marketing for this album is criminal. I had no idea it even existed. Didn't see it anywhere. It's a shame the promotion is just not happening because this is beautiful. It reminds me of that Post-Yoshimi era that I need in my life. I love you guys. I saw you in concern in Raleigh, NC a couple years ago. I still have the sweater.

Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past 🍍🌴

Absolutely BRILLIANT, both the music and the images. [One quibble is that it is unfortunate that some of the more serious songs on the album are paired with footage of zonked hipsters doing celebratory dancing in bubbles; it would arguably be more appropriate to see more footage of the band performing, and maybe more psychedelic/surreal/abstract imagery, with the audience deemphasized.] Anyway: THANK YOU, FLAMING LIPS: you've given us something here we can never repay, a powerful musical statement to help us process our grief and grapple with the wide spectrum of the mystery of our short, fragile lives.
