Man within her first 2 minutes, she really dropped a truth bomb. Empathy is not always so virtuous. Empathy can ABSOLUTELY be used to manipulate people to behave in harmful ways. I know my experience isn't related to the circumstances she describes, but in my life, empathy kept me in a very unhealthy and harmful relationship for years, and I am still climbing out of it.

Yay! My 2 favorite podcasters together! I so enjoyed this interview and learned so much. I'm looking forward to reading Allie Beth's book. As a mom of twin boys, the story of the foundations of trans medicine broke my heart. Becket, thank you SO much for talking about how Jesus had a Jewish audience (with understanding of Torah/law), while Paul addressed Gentiles who had pagan culture and no background for moral law. That is very helpful to consider. It is so refreshing to listen to intelligent, educated Christians speak the truth with gentleness and respect. Bravo.

It seems good. Becket Cook says it is a sin to engage in homosexual behavior. I am in my 50's, and the vast majority of Christian pastors, as well as most of American culture before about maybe 2004 thought that way. I am thinking about presidential candidate John Kerry endorsing homosexuality and same sex marriage as a point of changing beliefs. In about 1991, I remember being in an ROTC unit and all had to sign a document saying we had never engaged in homosexual behavior. In the present day, all or most of the American corporate leaders endorse LGBTQ rights. I myself am developing an inferiority complex because of this and my lack of professional success in America. Reading from biology, I do not believe homosexuality can be inherited, but that has been deemed as irrelevant as to whether that lifestyle is proper or improper. My personal experience is one of a lot of intense misery. I did complete a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona in 1995 and later an MBA with the University of Phoenix. I spent 5 years in the Navy in that time period. The American labor market as well as my relatives believe I know nothing. I am in my 50's, but I have no chance of retiring even if I wanted. The conversations between my relatives can make me feel very miserable. I do not know what I did so wrong in my life. Most of American society, and the leadership of America does not believe that part of the Bible, and they think it is wrong including those in the media like at CNN and MSNBC. I wrote an email to the LGBTQ branch of the United Methodist Church after the appearance of an LGBTQ pastor on the PBS NewsHour. I just asked her how she dealt with the scripture related to homosexual because the news anchor Geoff Bennet did not. I never got a reply. I can believe my relatives, at least my parents and other immediate relatives want me to believe I have done something terribly wrong with my life. I experience misery. I guess my situation is not as bad as those in the Southeast who experienced Hurricane Helene.

I appreciate your explanation about the difference between empathy and kindness. It is important to ground the issues you mention in truth. We're not really loving people when we encourage delusional behaviors or don't recognize the harms being done in our society. I've been saying that compassion has been weaponized against us, ie. progressives are calling for an artificial and superficial compassion and calling us hypocrites when we Christians don't agree. I look forward to reading this book.

I am so hurt and drained by well-meaning brothers and sisters in Christ telling me to “have more compassion”. I believe it is the KINDEST thing to do for another and that is to TELL THEM THE TRUTH!!! Doing this in a loving way still doesn’t ensure that the hearer will receive it in a loving way. Therefore, “Christians” are telling us to “show more compassion” to the point of what I discern to be enabling. God bless you both.

What a breath of fresh air. Someone who boldly speaks the truth. What I find particularly disturbing (as a victim of child sexual abuse) is this tread to normalize pedophilia by referring to it as MAPS (minor attracted persons). I saw this topic in a TED talk sometime ago however it garnered so much blow back that it was removed but history tells us that was only the first attack in a war to normalize every sexual deviance.

@@BecketCook you’re welcome! I literally just got done watching your interview with Annie Ing. So inspiring. Towards the end I was thinking of how people like you and Annie, who accept Christ as adults, have a different experience from people like me, who accepted Christ in childhood. It’s easier for you guys not to be cynical with the church. I have seen the gamut and am struggling to fight off cynicism. I love Jesus and enjoy evangelism, but the church (specifically church leadership) has put me off the corporate entity that is so far from what Jesus intended for the ekklesia. I've only listened for 5 minutes so far but the problem that I see with empathy or what the left want of our empathy, using Ali Beth's crying baby on the plane example, If my empathy motivates me to temporarily inconvenience myself for the sake of helping that mother with a crying baby that's a good and noble thing but something that I have the freedom to choose to do of my own accord. What the gender-confused Community want of my empathy is to require me to permanently inconvenience myself for their sake. To accommodate them in a way that doesn't really help them in truth and I have no free will to choose to or not to Act. This is also not a temporary situation but rather a permanent situation where I am regarded as less intrinsic and allowed less of who I am so that somebody else can be convenienced with no real justification for the accommodation of their erroneous self-perception.
