My workstation was piling up with THINGS and it was time to make some changes for better desk organization. During our office makeover I decided I wanted to make a desk shelf for my office, and a monitor stand for the closet. We used some scrap wood we had from some old built-ins we tore out of the living room.

I recently went monitor stand hunting and she’s absolutely right. Lots of really ugly stands available and every time I found a pretty one, with a beautiful design, it came with a hefty price tag.

Finding solid maple slab doors is like winning the DIY lottery!! 😍 Staining maple/birch is also the worst thing I have to do as a cabinetmaker. I found using a conditioner is the only way to get consistent colour.

The advantage of DIY is you can, as you say, customize it to fit your needs, like routing out a little rounded dip near the edge of the top or shelf to prevent pencils or pens from rolling out. I would recommend anyone wanting to try this project on the cheap and don't have a lot of scrap lumber you could use to buy a sheet of MDF, have the store cut it to size. Buy some veneer edging to iron on the exposed sides of the MDF. Then paint, stain, or add a veneer over the top and sides. If you enclose the back consider adding a path on the back to snake cables through.

I just recently used those ikea feet to build myself a monitor stand, but I cut of the raised section off the mounting plate. And seeing that side was then the shortest I put that towards the front and back edge of the timber plank which in turn gave more distance between the legs. 👍🏼

I did the monitor shelf idea with a commercial shelf I found in my travels. The self was thicker and had a superior melamine finish on it. Downside it was white. The deskshelf in my case has to be purchased as I am living in a 30m^2 apartments so I can't fit a table saw and a router table and I don't have a kreg Jig. Nor do I have room for scrap wood for projects! But I love the idea. I think I will go to grovemade for my desk shelf. They have a really nice one and its fairly large.

Ha, I was about to ask where that shelf was from in the last vid. I've been drooling a bit over Grovemade's stuff, but it'd cost an arm and a leg when shipping/VAT is added, so clearly it's cheaper to buy a house with a big enough space for a workshop, all the tools and materials, and then make it myself.

Great job. The main secret of woodworking is knowing how to recover from your mistakes. I would have just repositioned the legs on the monitor stand. Only a few of the screw holes would have shown and you’d never know since no one can get their head underneath to look. Wood staining is always tough. Maple and cherry in particular. Always use a sanding sealer. Also, check out the Sam Maloof oil/poly top coat that Rockler sells. My go-to finish.

I just wanted to pass along that on your table saw when you do the extended fence setup the red dial on the fence will deploy a lip so you aren't worried about the piece dropping off the table when cutting. Nice to see a custom piece made for your desk!

Pretty cool. And yes, i feel that. Why is every desk shelf so short? The speakers fit perfectly there and look great, but i gotta say...........never met a person that dont wanted to listen good music after they heard a good speaker setup. My opinion, if you dont have good speakers and a good position for them, you just dont hear whats wrong. And thats very sad, music is such a beautiful thing. Generally acoustic is such an important thing. Anyway, cool desk shelf!
@greatpix
@greatpix 3 жыл бұрын
As a little upgrade in the design you could make it a bit taller add a second shelf and slide one or more (divided?) slim boxes in there for pencils, pens, paperclips, etc. The only thing about having speakers so low is you get less treble, which, for those who don't know, makes speech clearer and gives some clarity to music and ambient sounds. You might try pointing the speakers in various directions, including backwards, to diffuse the sound, which might sound better to you.

A quick modification you could do to the server shelf is make a simple square router template for the base plates. Route out a 1/8 inch deep area as close to the corner as possible, and you can mount the legs closer to the edge without the metal showing. Countersunk screws will help you achieve an almost flush look without pulling out your Dremel and modifying the metal base plate. Love the vids! You guys have such an inventive design aesthetic!

Thank you for sharing these two projects. Indeed the desk shelf is a bit more difficult, but still doable if one can live with some compromises (without the rounded edges). I would at least try to do the desk shelf myself. Especially with all the home office arrangement, it might be an easy "get away from the desk" project.

Listen. Every time you post the ‘bloopers’ at the end and you can see Chris’ personality shine I always say ‘doctor’ out loud. (I do the same watching Community and Ken Jeong does something kooky). I would much prefer seeing a physician who has personality like this than the personality of a used and discarded piece of cardboard. I love everything you both do. Hopefully if my BF ever really gets chocolate milk in his veins, Chris will come pick him up in his F’n helicopter and fix him. 😂 PS. That stand is gorgeous. Great work.
