I first watched this video three months ago, at the beginning of yet another round of doing keto. How long would it last this time? I've been on and off keto so many times I felt like an expert in something I always failed to succeed with. But the words "don't stop before the magic happens" really stuck in my mind. I realized the problem was I was always giving up too soon. So I dug my heels in and now I've lost almost 40 pounds and the scale continues to go down every week as I get closer and closer to my goal. I have all the signs of fat adaptation. I'm 47 years old and having an easier time losing weight then I did when I was 24!

Being fat adapted feels so good and does give me freedom with food. The problem is that once I do indulge in anything made with chocolate I’m off and running again. Sugar and white flour are both terribly addictive! In any case, your videos give me the motivation to make the changes that will bring about better health (again). Low carb and fasting are the answer to a lifetime struggle with food addiction. Thank you Dr. Becky!

I have been keto since May 23 now, lost about 25kg and am now at 97kg at 1.80m, 13kg to go. I feel awesome! I did buy a Lindt 85% chocolate the other day. Before I would destroy it in seconds, now I had 4 pieces as a treat after dinner (doing IF with OMAD) and it tasted sooooo good, not bitter at all, and I really enjoyed it. But I don’t crave it anymore. As a treat great, but that’s it. Low carb/keto/carnivore and IF is so fundamentally liberating!

I do miss sugar, flour, rice (especially basmati) pasta and potatoes but no longer crave them. Weirdly, I don't miss chocolate which was my favorite sweet of all. My body is much happier for not having to metabolize these poisons anymore. Now foods organic monkfruit liquid is my savior. I use it for iced tea and to sweeten my plain greek yogurt.

Was not overweight but was supporting hubs who was diagnosed with diabetes. He lost 60 pounds and reversed his diabetes! :) BUT…. I developed female hormonal issues. I went through a tough time in 2020 and had surgery for fibroids I never had before going Keto. Was having heavy periods for almost a full year Granted I was in my late 40s and lots was happening! We’re on it, Dr. B. Been doing keto and IF for about six months now and feel great! We mainly do OMAD every day and then do a prolonged water fast of at least 3-5 days every month. I did a 10-day water fast in January and a 7-day in April. Sometimes we open the window a little to two hours or even four hours just for some variety and flexibility. Now I could not even imagine having a six or eight hour eating window, as that is way too much for me. The energy and mental clarity while living this lifestyle is amazing, and I don’t see ever going back to the old way when considering the health benefits and ease of this. Challenge accepted! For life! Thanks Dr. B!

I’m a 73 yr old man. I have had very good luck on keto thanks to you and your husband, losing nearly 40 lbs. I swim laps, walk 3 miles, and do resistance training every day. I’m building muscle, but not seeing the fat going away. I eat bacon for breakfast, eggs with cheese for lunch and brats for dinner. I drink a lot of water and take a daily multi-vitamin. How do I know how much fat is too much? How much protein is too much? What signs do I look for?
@annaak7849 Жыл бұрын
I would add in intermittent fasting, perhaps 2 meals per day only (or just1 meal some days)
@wakeupcall2665 Жыл бұрын
Intermittent fasting is very helpful as in 16 hours fasting window and 8 hours eating window with two meals a day. No snacking. Also a longer fast of 36 or perhaps 48 hours works wonders, and autophagy really kicks off. Also, the 72 hours sardine challenge! Eat whenever, but only high quality sardines in a tin can, and sufficient amount of water.
@egg399.6 ай бұрын
Are brats all natural?
@PaisteZildjian5 ай бұрын
70-80g of protein per day is likely sufficient, depending on your weight. Too much protein is unhealthy and also turns into carbs. Dr. Berg can explain more about that. Also, you may be drinking too much water. Urine should not be clear. That is a fallacy.

If you’ve lost forty pounds, how can you say you don’t see fat loss? Maybe you are gaining a lot of muscle? But if you can’t see that fat is lost, then I wonder if you have a skewed view of fat, be careful.

Excellent video. I am a competitive Ironman Triathlete who races at least 1x a month and unknown to me have a fatty liver with relatively high elevated AST and ALT liver enzymes 4 months ago. . How ? I lived on sports drinks and glucose packets for training and racing. I also lived on sports drinks all day long as my general drink of choice and perhaps a soda or sweet energy drink or two every day. Also ate a lot of "enriched breads" and pizza. I thought nothing of it, my waist didn't get any larger over the years so I figured I was ok. Little did I know, that fat was building up inside my abdomen as visceral fat. I started Keto and 14:10 fasting 4 months ago and religiously followed around 25 carbs for almost 2 months. The first 7 weeks were absolutely terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially still doing biking and run training daily while fasted. Headaches, aches, urinating constantly, muscle cramps all the time and a really high resting pulse rate. Finally I figured out to increase my sodium to around 4,000 mg (9.5g of Himalyan salt) (Florida is hot) , take a potassium supplement and eat an avocado (I really dislike them) every day. Around 7 weeks, my resting pulse and my exercise pulse got back to more normal. At 8 weeks I started moving into eating around 75g to 100g of carbs depending on training schedule. At 3 months I can bike training ride 3+ hours or run 1+ hours (in Zone 3 heart rate zone) while I have been fasted for at least 13 hours. I almost gave up after 7 weeks - As Dr. GIllaspy said, electrolyte replenishment is key. I have used LMNT for a couple of months now. It has been my goto I carry on my bike. KIndof expensive so I buy the ingredients in bulk containers and make my own version with the same electrolyte content. BTW, I cut my Liver Enzyme levels to 1/3 of that in March. My message to readers, dangerous fatty liver can happen to anyone. It is a silent killer. Still perplexes me. Both my Dr. and I were shocked and surprised at the high liver readings in March.

To reiterate im not hungry until dinner. Im in ketosis all day and im finally losing belly fat after yeays and years of trying everything. Did 1 month of carnivore diet, cut all sugar and carbohydrates out cold this year in May. I'm a sugar addict so it was very hard not to eat some icecream and chocolate, but a girl I liked gave me the power to lose some weight 😂 so I endured. Went from 94 kg to 83 kg, then went back to eating icecream and chocolate every night while doing 24 hours fasting every work week because my work keeps me busy 12-15 hours a day, so it was easier to not start snacking during the day. After all these months I stay in the range of 83-85 kg. The things I felt during carnivore diet are: 1. Didn't feel hungry all day, hunger while being fat adapted is not the same as hunger on high carb diet. I could have come home and sleep without eating without problems. 2. Had energy all day and never got tired or sleepy because there was no sugar crash. 3. My mental health was better, didn't get mood swings. 4. Back pain and joint pain went away. 5. The power in my hands basically doubled. I would work and use a grip strenghtener. At maximum strength settings I could do 10 in a row before my hand started to hurt. On carnivore all or a sudden I could do more than 20 before my fingers started to hurt. That was surprising because how easy and fast I would do those sets to 20. I'm now going back to carnivore with 0 sugar and carbs. I want to lose the belly fat I still have and feel better everyday, I'm look forward to mental clarity and no mood swings again because it started to get ridiculous. It's just hard sometimes because I love pistacchio icecream so much.

It's "as simple as that," and it's CRAZY good! The idea finally got through to me mostly from watching Ford Brewer and Sten Eckbert videos. I tried OMAD of a meat (typically chicken thighs or ribeye steak) plus a fairly large quantity of green, non-starchy frozen vegetables -- and that's IT (plus some appropriate supplements). It almost IMMEDIATELY became ABSURDLY EASY to continue with! I started this about 5 weeks ago, and the fat has been melting off me at a rate that astonishes me. I did do a 3 day fast as well. I feel I could fast anytime I want. I'm simply NOT hungry in the least. The keys: the intermittency (which gives TIME for the fat burning), and the low, low carbs -- which encourages the metabolic process.

Hi Dr Becky As I have posted before I am a great believer in your methode for weight loss. The thing that I find is that my weight varies from summer to winter. It is a lot easier to lose weight over summer, not so easy over winter. My metobolic body function demands more food so I tend not to adhere to more strict guide lines over the winter period. This year down here in NZ I find during the winter months when my metabolisim demands more fuel my weight goes up about 2 kg (about 5 lbs) but since following your system I am not worried as I am confident that I can control that minor gain as I come into spring weather. Most animals that we are part of the species do the same. We store energy during the colder seasons to get us though this period. I am sure that the extra weight that I have put on during this period will not stay once the spring/summer season begins. Thanks for your encouragement with your system. Cheers Warwick Smith

I'm going on 2 years since I went on Keto. Naturally, I started intermittent fasting on the 2nd day and stick with an 18:6 schedule. Sometimes, it's 20:4 or one meal a day. My wife sees my physical changes but she can't get over the lack of food I eat. I used to chow down 6 or 7 small meals a day. I tell her I just eat when I'm hungry and sometimes it might be just one meal in a day. I am fat adapted but it's not something like I know it. I don't feel any different, it's just that I want more non-carb foods than carb foods. Like when I started on keto, I was concerned about walking away from bread. I'm German-Italian, so it's part of my DNA to eat bread with every meal. Today, no cravings from bread. I can even smell a slice of bread or walk by a bakery and not even catch my attention. Oh yeah, Chinese. It used to be the moment I smelled Chinese food, I was hungry. It didn't matter if I just ate. Now, it smells good, but I'm not hungry. The weird thing is, I used to crave a late night snack, so I ate popcorn or ice cream right before bed. If I do that today, it's a knife spread of butter. Butter. Or a spoonful of peanut butter.

I totally relate to your comment. A spoon of 1/2 peanut butter, 1/2 butter is a wonderful treat. When I was not eating Keto one of my favorite snacks was a peanut butter/butter sandwich. Subtracting the bread was a simple way to still enjoy a favorite snack except now it's just the one spoonful and not the amount needed to fill a sandwich.

Thanks for the solid encouragement. I used to watch you and your husband back in 2019 when I first discovered keto and IF. I’ve gained some weight and lost my motivation during C-time. Now, I’m back trying again. I’ve already clocked in more than a month of low carb and IF from 13-48 hours. I’ve felt some relief but a few holiday interruptions may have steered me off course. I’m curious how many carbs I can tolerate bc I’m surely not as strict as I was in 2019. I’m trying more vegetarian foods, which although avoiding wheat flour and rice tend to add carbs in beans and occasionally potatoes. I’m hoping the fasting will tamper the effects of the carbs. I commit to your challenge, Dr. Becky. The fasting part has been a great habit for me. I have trained myself to go for 16-26 hours of IF. 3-4/ times each week. However, I believe I need the electrolytes. I drink between 5-7 bottles of water daily. Thanks for the excellent, encouraging, and insightful video. I appreciate the discount too!

In 2021 i tried the 21 day low carb diet and I wish i knew what i know now about the electrolytes and salt to taste and the affects of "carb flu" I felt so bad on day 4 when i headed to the store i thought i was gonna faint😂so i ate a peppermint candy in the car from one of our many trips to Sonic and i immediately felt better!! wow that made me think this low carb diet isnt for me but i stuck it out til day 21 and lost a few pounds but i wast ready to give up on the carbs!! 2 years later i finally understand all that and slowly became lower carb giving up bread and then sugar to basically eating ketavore i was diagnosed with an autoimmune liver disease last fall and realized eating all that fruit on WW-(10 years ago i lost 45 pounds and kept it off) - didnt do me any favors- im off sugar but still use stevia drops and a few veggies/most bother my digestion but i eat mostly meat, good fats and high fat dairy-

I started at 5 to 6 grams of carbs per day then settled on anything less than 20g. You want some serious weight loss? Drop thos carbs to 5 like i did. I never went hungry and ate tons of food but lost 50 pounds in 5 months. 207lbs to 157 lbs. Its crazy considering how much steak eggs and butter i ate but without high insulin you will not store fat. There was definite fine tuning of electrolytes during the keto flu phase but mostly it is adding salt or taking a magnesium/potassium supplement while you transition. I feel FANTASTIC nowadays
@KM-vf4oi2 жыл бұрын
Have you reintroduced more carbs into your diet? If so did you gain some of the weight back?
@EthanE32 жыл бұрын
@@KM-vf4oi i did once i hit goal weight. I am less strict now that i am healthy, my body can handle a little carbs. I just know that they will cause a blood sugar dive and i may have cravings later. I ignore the cravings or answer them with a 0 carb high fat snack if they are too strong. Mostly i only eat at noon and five so carbs at any meal will be taken care of during my fast.

I think I'm eating too much protein and too much lactose. I'm stuck. will adjust, we'll see, labs again in 2 months, have been steadily improving. But only a 5 lb drop in last 8 months. Lost 10 lbs first 4 months before I cut out all grains and seed oils. Pretty sure I'm getting 70% fats from daily eggs, butter, bacon, fatty beef, and avocado. Keeping good veggies at 1/3 dinner, none at brunch. But often having more than 4 or 5 oz of protein (sometimes a huge steak or 2 fish fillets, 4 chicken legs) both meals. Brunch is always bacon, eggs, butter. Have started adding some onion and bell pepper, or goat or other cheese, or sour cream. Maybe too much lactose?

Since insulin cause to store energy as fat. What do we do with diabetic medication that triggers our bodies to produce more insulin. Isn’t that counter the keto diet ???

Thank you, Dr. Gillaspy for this excellent explanation of how to make our bodies fat adapted or metabolically flexible. I started learning this about two years ago with intermittent fasting: You have added to my knowledge and I will try the electrolytes as I do have a hard time feeling full when I eat.
@ModernGentleman Жыл бұрын
It's important to know that your body NATURALLY prefers to use fat as fuel rather than carbohydrates. Our bodies evolved on fat, and it's what we are tuned to use as fuel. This is why we have 5 organs that work in concert to break down fat and protein, and none to break down fiber.

I'm finding if a kick myself out of ketosis or drop to under .5 after a meal, I'm back in ketosis in a few hours. Does this mean I'm on the right track to fat adapted?

Fat adaptation is the first order towards metabolic flexible. Where one able to utilise a little carbohydrate but mostly fats in the form of ketones as fuel for our mind body. Learn up the benefits of metabolic flexible & in ketosis mode, you shall overcome fat adaptation easier

@@MontanaWelldigger the maximum days I can go without cheating is 10 days ....I will be deep in ketosis ( I test my blood), I have no cravings but I will do something really innocent like have a glass of wine with dinner and then suddenly something in my brain snaps. Even though I am full, I get a strong temptation for pizza or burgers and at that point it feels like I am committing self sabotage. I order pizza and even though I am not hungry, I eat the whole thing....once I'm out of keto I make these excuses that I might as well have a few foods for the last time before I go back to my keto diet and it ends up being 2-3 days of unhealthy eating.

Hi Dr. Gillaspy, thx 4 leading me here. Congrats on the medal! 🎊 Another question: does the fiber content of certain sources negate the process of fat adaptation, for instance I prefer to use lots of foods w/fat over oils such as flax and chia seeds, which contains fat, but also lots of fiber. I SO appreciate you and Thx again!
