This is really good. I wanted a sensor that will be useful in extremely humid conditions and the HC-SR04 wasn't going to last very long there. This video has been helpful.

I saw this in a shop and I wanted to build a safe distance sensor for vehicle, with an onboard sound or LED levels indicator, so I came over to check tutorials here. Then seeing your video, I find that I am trying to utilize this module for just a mere purpose compared to what it is capable of.

It's nice to see when things don't work, because that is real learning. Although the v2 sensor is far less accurate that the version 1 board in air.

The minimum range of this sensor in water should be around 80 cm at least ( since speed of sound is around 4 times bigger in water). 3 feet is around 90 cm and perhaps it was 10 cm deep into the water. You could make the same experiment in 4, 5 or 6 feet depth and see what happens.

Rats... my IT friend and I are thinking about combining our professional skills to design a more sophisticated ROV project in regards to my present „Touch muh hull“ design. Sonar would have been nice but watching this leaves us just as humbled; understanding that useful sonar will be much more cost intensive. But thank you so much for that fine video and for sharing your research! I will keep an eye out for further updates!!! 😀

Hi, thanks for the video :) This is great stuff. I am about to undertake some budget experiments in underwater communication based upon piezo transducers at 18kHz and 40Khz. Finding any information on marine transducers and depth sounders is quite difficult. Interesting enough is that piezo based hydrophones appear to work very well. I really think this may be a coding/driver issue rather than the transducer as I have seen others create/or discussing small sounders like this in some Arduino forums. Something I have discovered from initial research is that temperature plays a significant roll in speed of sound calculations for under water, and that some amount of discrimination/filters may be required as well as dealing with side echo . Also note that piezo transducers are natively AC sine wave, and Arduino is DC square (They will work, but are very noisy sound, not clean pings) so maybe look at a DAC to transducer, and ADC for the return (If you aren't already). I have subscribed and bookmarked your channel, so will post my findings back to you when I get to it (If you are still interested :)) Thanks again Axle

Documentation of your process was very useful! I was curious about the durability and waterproof-ness of the sensor and yours seemed to have survived full immersion, even in some funky water. I /suspect/ it didn't actually /function/ underwater are for two reasons: 1 being the time of return, if minimum bounce time is 20-25cm in air, it would be 80-110cm in water. But then part 2 becomes a problem: ringing enough energy to sense in to water is harder, maybe 80+cm is just too much for it? Either way I'm going to pick one of those up and experiment! Thanks!

Nicee .. You did do some nice and rigorous tests .. Love the efforts you put in !! Do you know if there is any waterproof sensor which has less than 20cm distance? (according to 0:43)
@BeckyMarshallDesign5 жыл бұрын
I did not find one-- I believe that would be a much more expensive sensor.
@paulmeynell88665 жыл бұрын
The 20cm comes from the fact it is a single sensor(. Speaker) used for transmit , then for receive ( the speed you can switch between uses is the limiting factor)
@Unstoppableankit Жыл бұрын
DYP-A02YY has that feature, but it's costly.

It works well outside the water and it measures the distance between the sensor and the water. So that it works within the water and it measures the depth you must modify the frequency of the sensor since the water in denser than the air.

HI Becky I have just been playing around with board AJ-SR04M which i think is the same as JSN-SR04T-2.0 i have got this to work under water just needed to fit one componant on the board that way you can switch between sound in air or looking into the water won't to use it for sonar for a 12ft submarine i have got have a look on youtube and type in videos of 12ft Gato submarine made this 30 years ago. Have just finished doing lidar radar for it and it will transmit back to bankside and show on laptop what the sub is looking at All the best Subjohn in uk

Excellent video.A bit late to the party but this is NOT an underwater sensor PROBABLY. I did similar experiments all of which failed miserably. What I THINK the culprit is: Bubbles forming in front of the sensor probe. Some notes taken from the comments. 1. Minimum range in water is 80 cm (water speed= 4 * air speed) 2. Maybe energy is not enough for sound wave produced to travel in water(too much attenuation?). 3. Maybe different(higher) carrier frequency is needed for a sensor like this to work in water. Extra note: Yes this sensor will most likely work in humid environments (outside water). HOWEVER, depending on the conditions, humidity and/or temperature might be needed to be taken into account to get accurate measurements. Good luck everyone.

hello,your mistake is that you are considering the tranducer as the receiver,but it is not,the receiver is on the board and if there is no something betewen them the board is measuring properly.I use the same device on the bait boat and it is measuring fine

the speed of sound depends on its medium. The speed of sound in air is not the same as in the water. In air, the speed of sound is 343m/s while in water the speed of sound is 1480m/s. maybe you can change these value in your code..

I believe what went wrong is, The sensors chip should have a comparator which was configured to the voltage recieving from the sensor when operated in air, I believe a more good experiment to conduct would be to make a reciever with another one of those and probe it using a scope

Do you think an ultrasonic transducer can go through the metal of a propane tank to detect propane usage? I was thinking of attaching it firmly to the bottom of the tank and it would have to go through the metal to measure the propane.

lol check out russian youtubers, you find the solution: your program work with the coefficient for air. Since the speed in the air is about 320m/s and in the water 1450m / s, it is enough to change this coefficient!!
