Have you heard of the Delonghi La Specialista model home espresso machines? They are filling up the home barista market, and that is the reason for this video. We take a beginner's barista crash course in making espresso drinks including: espresso, lungo, americano, long black, cappuccino and latte macchiato.
For these recipes, I do use a bottomless portafilter and IMS basket, which are linked below.

You have extensive experience with both 51mm PF and 58mm PF machines. What would you say is the difference in espresso quality or taste between the two? 51 and 58 seem quite apart to me as compared to 58 and Breville’s 54. Thanks.

I did a ton of research on a lot of machines. I kept coming back to this one. What I did not see though were the MANY negative review regarding the air pump. I had purchased this as a Christmas gift for myself that was also supposed to double as our Christmas Eve party coffee maker for all of my family members. Upon opening I was very excited, it has a sleek design and it perfect for ease and user functionality.. or so I thought. HOURS. We spent hours of time trying to get this to work. Our first issue was us not being able to flush the system. Which this issue was NEVER addressed as a warning within the manual. After many KZbin videos and some creative wording we found it. It like many other of these machines has an air pump issue. The correct verbiage is “air lock” we tried everything and nothing works. Unfortunately all of the techs were closed for the Holidays so we have a $800 machine sitting as a massive decor item yet useless. We also had issues with the grinder working although it might have just also been due to us never being able to flush the system because it appears once you do that the other functions work or are supposed to. Needless to say I am ANNOYED. I will wait until Monday and be optimistic but I already have a Terra Kaffee automatic espresso maker in my cart on standby for when I dissapointingly might have to return this machine.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Well, all espresso machines need to have their systems primed, if they are new, or been sitting too long. The best way to do this typically, is to let hot water out of the spigot, or the steam wand, depending on the machine. No matter which machine you choose, I hope you find your satisfaction, and some good coffee! Cheers, Tom

@SilvestreHerrera
@SilvestreHerrera 3 сағат бұрын
Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Whenever I try to use my coffee machine (I have the same one, EC9155), the pressure indicator goes into the red zone and coffee barely drips. I'm grinding about 10 grams for the small basket and 12 to 15 grams for the larger basket. I've tried grinding on setting 3 (I've also tried 2 and 4) and I barely apply any force when tamping. The coffee beans are fresh (only 4 days since they were roasted). I don't have a proper distribution tool yet (I've ordered one), so I use a sewing needle to try and remove any air pockets, and I always tap the portafilter to try and evenly distribute the grounds. The machine is brand new (barely a week old), so I highly doubt I need to do a descaling cycle.

Tom, many thanks for your beautiful video. One question about Lungo. How do you dial the machine to produce 45g of Lungo. I got 1:2 ratio on my DeLongi Arte Evo. Do you reprogram it? Thank you.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 7 ай бұрын
Well, you can just hold the button down, until your desired amount is reached. I normally program the buttons on my machines to let out a lot of liquid, and stop myself, when the desired volume has been reached. That way, I can stop for a ristretto, espresso, lungo, or turbo shot.

Thanks Tom! Appreciate your videos , really helpfull! I bought this machine two months ago, it’s been a ride, love everything related to coffee. Just a question. I ofcourse bought a scale, I don’t know the two espresso basket size (it’s says 29/22 whatever that means) Usually weight 19 grams. Since I have a weighting machine to see how many beans I’m using, the dose level on the machine is obsolete right? Or does it have some type of quirk . Lastly, how many grams would you recommend with single and double shot baskets. Thanks !
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Hey Leo, aim for 16 grams in the double, and 8-9 grams in the single. Don't bother with the knob on the machine - rather weigh your dose. Have fun experimenting! Tom

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks for replying Tom! Im currently using a medium roast, with the grinding at 2. Espresso 1:2 comes out averaging 27-30 seconds so at least i know im doing something right, however, the pressure always goes too high. I am tamping with much less pressure and cant seem to find a solution, what would you recommend ? If i grind it coarser, than it would take 17-23 seconds . Thanks!

Hi Michael! The Arte is a nice ergonomic machine to use, but like most thermoblock machines, it is lacking some heat, compared to models which include a heated brew group. The BBE might be a better option, although that also requires a good 30 minutes to warm up said brew group. I use the Timemore Black mirror scale.

Hi there! The basket fits around 16 g, maybe even up to 18. It depends on the roast. You can fit in more light roast into the basket then you can dark roast. I wouldn’t necessarily use the ridge of the basket as an indicator, but rather a scale. 👍🏻

Also in the guide that came with it it says to grind at a five setting for dark roast but if I want espresso that is to coarse right?

Hi there! Yes 16 grams for a double, and maybe 8-9 for a single. I only use doubles, as they are much more forgiving, and I prefer doubles anyway. I would suggest grinding fine enough, that you get 32 grams in 20-25 seconds. Cheers! Tom

I really like your tutorials which allow me to prepare good coffee. However, it would be interesting to know the degree of roasting of your coffee, also why you grind on position 2, also why the temperature is at maximum on your machine. I hope you consider my questions a sign of interest in what you do ;-)

Howdy! My coffee is a med-dark roast, freshly roasted. Grind position is 2, because this machine does not grind super fine. I am aiming for my extraction to be 25 seconds or so, as a ballpark figure. High temp because this is a thermoblock machine, and temperature is lost at the unheated brew group and portafilter. Cheers!

Hi Tom. I'm thinking of getting an espresso machine. I have my eyes on this machine, with option 2 being the ECP35.31 + a standalone grinder. In your opinion, which would be the better option to as a avid coffee (latte) drinker? Or do you have other suggestions of what is the best go to coffee machine in the sub £500 price range? Love your videos, they're very informative and well presented. Thanks

Hi there! I would suggest the ECP and standalone grinder over the EC9155. I like the Fellow Opus, Eureka Manuale, for economical grinders. Otherwise you might want to wait for a Sage Barista Express when it goes on sale. Cheers!

@@TomsCoffeeCorner I ended up going with the Sage Dup Temp Pro and the Eureka Manuale. The Sage is fantastic however the grinder is incapable as a single dose grinder. It doesn't grind fine enough for me and therefore even when I fill up the basket and tamp as best as I can, the coffee just flows too quickly. I have set the grinder to just offset from the burrs touching, the closest safe zone if you like but still to coarse I think, especially looking at some of the vidoes on YT. I get around 40ml from 16g in around 22-23 seconds. I want to aim for 30 seconds, although the lattes do taste great, think they can be a bit better if I can slow the extraction down. I even tried the dual wall basket to slow things down but with no luck. So I will be returning the Eureka Manuale for this reason. In your opinion, would the Smart Grinder Pro be a better option as a single dose grinder? Appreciate your input.
