@Tomscoffee I love this machine, it's super easy to use. Only problem I have is trying to get the dosage correct, I end up taking some ground coffee out of the basket after I have used the tamper, so it fits and screws on. It does fit a little bit better, and i dont need to take out as much coffee if I turn the grinder down to the number 1 setting so it grinds up super fine. It still needs a least a tea spoon worth of ground up coffee removed.

There are so many videos reviewing this machine, and I've viewed them all. Some are great. But yours is, by far, the most straight-forward, to the point and easy-to-understand review of them all. I've bought the machine now, so I watched your video after I bought it. Regardless of that, thanks a lot for reviewing the Arte - you've made me feel a lot better about my purchase. Tom, excellent review. I’ve had mine for 4 months and agree with everything you said. In practice the main disadvantages are : 1: you can’t empty the beans’ container (without first removing water, base, and accessories before tipping), and 2. Even on the finest setting It doesn’t grind fine enough to use supermarket coffee. Even brands like lavazza or movenpick won’t work. You have to buy more expensive (but fresher) coffee from smaller roasters. Admittedly they probably taste better anyway than stale supermarket beans. One nice feature you didn’t mention was the descaling warning light reminding you to descale.
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Yes Alan, I can agree with those points. Coffee that's freshly roasted is so much better anyway, that it's worth it. Good tip about the descaling light. Cheers!

Thanks Tom very interesting and helpful. Have just unpacked my machine and had a couple of tries to make a decent cappuccino. I have a question. What are the little dual wall baskets for? Mine has come with only one single basket. I have made the coffee using the portafilter just as you did in the video on a double setting. Seems fine. What are the baskets for and why do I need them?
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hey Wendy! The dual walled are for espresso that is older, or not ground fine enough. The dual walled creates additional resistance, thus adding to the crema (albeit fake crema). The single walled baskets are better for freshly ground coffee. I did this video on the differences (for Gaggia, but the principle is the same): kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppW2ZpSdr6Z2qJY

Thanks for the comprehensive review, I would consider buying this machine if I needed to replace my current Delonghi EC680/KG521 kit. The compact size and control of coffee powder mess are good qualities for partner acceptance. I'm surprised that Delonghi, the most prolific manufacturer of coffee machines, has taken so long to bring this machine to the market. Hi Tom, thanks for the excellent review - you covered everything I needed to know to make my decision and I'm very happy with the machine! One thing I was going to ask you about - I've not noticed the machine 'sneezing' when removing the portafilter pretty much as soon as the pressure needle reaches 0 - but what I have noticed is the puck sticking to the showerscreen pretty much all of the time at the moment. For reference, the machine is dialed in to extract with pressure on the righthand side of the 'optimal zone' (almost at the 1pm position). I'd like to say the puck is at the correct level in the basket after tamping (as per the instructions) - but am worried I'm overfilling the basket slightly? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Thanks!
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Well, I'd recommend measuring out 16g via scale, and waiting 60 seconds before removing the PF, to avoid that sneeze. Also, it's not a big deal if the puck sticks to the shower screen. It happens to me too, sometimes.

Hmm, if you have noticed, I have not reviewed a fully automatic, because I generally don't like them. They are convenient, but don't make a good coffee in my opinion. The one exception that I know, is once I had a really great aromatic and full bodied coffee from some kind of large Jura machine. Hi Tom, thanks for the video. I bought the machine yesterday and your video was the first one I watched! Really thank you for the information! I do have some confusion. I didnt set up the machine right out of the box like you did here. I still dont understand the pause like 1 or 2 seconds setting for the espresso, the grind setting 1 or 2 for the Cappuccino, and the volumetric shot like how you pressing down the OK button to get more espresso to come out and the ratio. Is that something you only do if you want something extra, like a better taste and more espresso volume?
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Hi there! I made this follow up video, which may be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZzPZaaFZ9Fna9k The pre-infusion is not all that impactful, I set it to be low on this machine. The grind setting IS important. Try to get twice the yield, in 20-25 seconds. Pressing down on the OK button is to get the ideal volume you want, volumetrically. So if you want 30 grams, just use a scale and hold the OK button until you get 30 grams, then let go. Anyway, please check out the other vids I have on this machine. I think they'll be helpful. Great video mate. I was trying to work out how to remove the grinder after buying the machine and you confirmed it that you can't. What settings should I use for dosing and grinding? I tried 20% for dose and 2 for grinding but when I tasted it was rather bitter. When I did it with my old manual Saeco Via Venezia was smooth. Thank you.
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hey Alfred, don't bother with the timing knob too much. You can use the grinder manually, too. Just try using a scale to get 16 grams for a double shot. As for sourness, you will need to play with the grind setting, to try getting 32-40 grams out in 20-25 seconds. Also, some lighter or medium roasts will always be more acidic than darker roasts, at least in my experience. Try using the highest temp setting. Cheers!

Hi Tom, your videos are truly informative and you're always giving us some new perspective on the equipment and making us good home barista without breaking a budget. My question would be since I own this machine for couple of months. My biggest problem is two consecutive single shots. Every single time pulling a second shot, machine stops maybe 20% earlier than the first shot before reaching previously programmed 1:2 ratio( same amount of coffee, same grinder setting). Do you have some similar experience?
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for your comment. Hmm, I don't know that I have experienced that. Have you measured the weight output? Is it really 20% less yield? I'm using a Bodum Bistro electric grinder (with blades, no dosing). I've been weighing 11 g of what I *believe* to be a good grind, with what I feel is a good tamper, and the puck is still more of a wet mush than an actual puck. It used to be more compact, so the machine probably isn't putting out as much pressure as it used. I've descaled, of course. But after improving my barista skills over several years, I think I may be due for an upgrade. I could buy the Arte now, or save up and get the Breville Barista Express Impress in a few months

Also, do you have to use the funnel when grinding and tamping with this one? If you dont use it, does it make a mess when grinding? Thanks.

Hello! thanks for the video, really helpful. We used to have the delonghi dedica ec685M but broke a few weeks ago. Husband took it apart and it turn out that the plastic bit inside broke due to pressure, anyways the issue was that water was escaping from under the bottom of machine. So now we are looking at this model you are reviewing. Can I ask till what temp do you steam your milk to? With the dedica I always used to use a temp wand and used to steam it up till 70 degrees Celsius. I’m wondering because I’ve never been able to pour it so nice like you to make a nice design. Many thanks. And hello from UK 🇬🇧
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Sorry to hear about your Dedica. I steam to around 60-61 degrees C. If you heat it up too high, it will break down the texture again, and become soupy. It is better to err on the side of too cool, rather than too hot. Cheers, and greetings from Germany!

I think I misspoke in the video actually. The included tamper fits well in the included baskets. But if you upgrade to a better basket (I am using the IMF precision basket), then a different tamper is needed. Still interested? Then check out the 51mm tamper by Normcore, and the basket by IMS. Have you try the sage barista express? What is better in you opinion?
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I also have the Barista Express. Should I do a comparison video? I think they are kind of neck and neck, but I like the internals of the Delonghi more. The pressurized water tubes for example are held onto the connectors with a metal grommet and metal clip. The Sage/Breville are held on with cable ties. At least that is how the Bambino Plus is. I think they are both pretty good machines though.
@gianlucaugolini37962 жыл бұрын
Yes i think they are on the same level, but i’m scared about the integrated grinder of both the machine. Maybe is better buy a grinder like the eureka specialita (like yours) and a used machine like the sage bambino plus.
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
@@gianlucaugolini3796 Well, the Specialita is going to be way better than either of these grinders. But I think this machine is appealing to a different sort of customer. For the price, I wold suggest the Gaggia Classic Pro over the Bambino Plus, but it depends on your budget. Do you make lots of milk drinks? The Bambino is better at that for sure. But for espresso, the GCP wins.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Agreed! I take only two cappuccino in the morning and two coffee in the evening, the bambino plus costs 450€ and the gaggia 410€ in italy. There’s a big problem of the gaggia for me, I don't like it aesthetically for the house 😂

Hi Aleksandar! Well, I wanted to compare the Arte to the Express. So I bought one used, that was leaking. Hi, glad you recommended the dedica-dose control combo it’s my current set up! I was just wondering how you know the age of your lavazza beans I didn’t think they had a roast date on the packet? Are they the best bet for cheap decent quality beans I’m trying to work out where my law of diminishing returns comes from for beans. £12 a bag for local fresh beans is just too much I think but Aldis £1.50 aren’t fresh at all. What beans would you recommend?
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew, that is a tough question. It is hard to find good beans for cheap. Lavazza puts a 2 year expiration date on their bags, so just deduct 2 years for the packaging date. Anything 6 weeks or younger is great. Otherwise, I do not know the UK market well enough to tell you which beans are good there. You could consider roasting your own, to save about 50%, and go further down the rabbit hole.
@matthewgreen83382 жыл бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner so do you just go to the supermarket and check all of the bags for the best before? I did look at home roasting but as you say it seems like a dangerous rabbit hole when still in a budget set up. The popcorn machine method was very tempting though. Thanks for the reply

@@matthewgreen8338 Best before only works for Lavazza, as far as I know. Otherwise, might have to stick with a local roaster, if you want to ensure good beans. I kind of switch off between really good beans, and just mediocre beans, to try and balance between good and economical.
