Learning to Bluebook is one of the most important skills I learned in school. Proper legal writing is such a necessary and sought after skill; a solid writing sample shows you can write concisely yet informatively and can be what puts you above someone who may have better grades but weak writing skills during recruiting.

That's true, but your grades and whether you're on the main law review count more. Good luck!

Hi Maya, My name is Justin. I’ve never really given a careen in law much thought in the past, but lately I’ve been considering it. I’m currently an entry level employee for a major company in my area that offers full tuition for employees in relevant fields. I believe this is an awesome opportunity for me to get my foot in the door to a fantastic career without destroying the bank. I just want to make sure my heads in the right place. I’ve been told I should be a lawyer more than a few times in the past, sometimes facetiously, and others genuinely. This is usually based on my enjoyment of digging into semantics and logic of things, and also that I generally enjoy a good argument. I also actually enjoy analyzing language and often find myself considering how something could have been written better or more specifically. I’m hoping that maybe you could shed some light on what led you to become a lawyer, if this isn’t covered in another video. Did you struggle with this decision, and what kind of classes did you enjoy in school prior to college? Thanks so much for any response! Justin

Yes, there is an unfortunate typo. However, having worked at a few top global law firms - I can tell you that she is very spot on with her other information. Another thing, while many newbies are gobsmacked at the starting salaries - one has to remember the current expenses you have, and will incur during your time as a lawyer within a top notch law firm. Your student loans; your upscale wardrobe, your upscale vehicle, your upscale jewelry; your upscale lifestyle in general (whether you can or cannot afford it) WILL take a big chunk out of it. In other words - ya gonna be "flossing" it for quite awhile - maybe for 5 years before you have a chance to even become a partner within the firm. Don't forget, one will probably have a family sometime between those years - MONEY will be tight. You are gonna have to keep up with the JONES - no ifs, ands, or buts. It will kill you when you take the amount of hours you will be required to work AND actually be able to bill (2,000 plus hrs.) and see how it breaks down to X amount of dollars - you will GLARE at your legal secretary when you compare how much she makes per hour, compared to you😉
