You can also use the echo predictavly. Basically planting it in a way that even if you break it itll still get hit. Kinda hard on some behemoths as they litrally deliver a circus act when falling over and flip flop quite far but on the monsters that fall rather short you can place the echo and then use the hold l to break the part opposite of where you planted the echo. Generally placing the echo as far away as you can from where you are attacking WITHOUT giving up your positioning is probably how you'd get the most out of it. You don't always plant it right inside of the monster, sometimes it's better to angle it to the side to make sure the monster will stay inside of it longer. Additionally, you can have a very high echo uptime to the point where you wont even need the crescent strike if you are good with placing the echos. This mainly works on the slow and the big ones. Due to their size or minimal movement you can basically reach almost optimal dps as long as your echo placements are good. This heavily depends on what you are fighting.

Tip from a reforge 160 sword main I've been using sword for 3 years what I have found most effective is lvl 4 lvl 5 is to exceeding and lowers dps in testing lvl 5 is viable against weak part behemoths ex:kharaback, strike etc

today i got dauntless and played it for the first time in 3 years and i learned if ur hunting embermanes and one tackles u use the heavy attack with the sword and if u time it right they will get stunned and i hope this helps some people ❤️

i know this is late but if you have 3 valour and hold heavy on sword it shoots out a energy slash that also interupts its more consistent so use it

Ok so I tested this both with adrenaline gear and with recruit gear and an irrelevant helm perk and using the recursive hilt bladerush actually lowers your dps both with the heavy combo crescent blade rotation and the heavy combo resounding echo rotation in both gear sets. It seems that in actual combat the recursive hilt is useful but in a training grounds scenario, and I imagine the same with a staggered behemoth, it actually lowers your dps.

I use to be a pro but quit, and 2 months later lost my data due to an epic games bug, I plan on coming back to the game since I remembered the fond memeorys of break dancing after cutting a giant crow to pieces with 3 other men wearing feather armor.

I never realized the specials took Valor so I just never use them, Instead I just do the hold light special it helps me move around the map too and with the savyt cutlass and valiant overdrive a shrike lantern and pulse cunning I'm critting more often than not and stun locking them to the point where I 0 to death a good majority of enemies

Sword is a very good weapon if you have a good build and know what your doing

I just wish the sword had more combos. Either regular combos or valour combos, hell, or both. Doing the same heavy heavy combo twice followed by a valour combo that depends on the situation gets rather stale. Still though, I love the sword dearly.

There is nothing complicated to using a Sword in Dauntless. It's nice to have rotations explained in video format, but, assigning them "Skill Levels." makes Sword sound louds more challenging than it actually is.

You'd be surprised by just how many people have done a number of reforges on sword but still only play skill level 1 or 2. While I'd agree that it's generally easy to grasp if you pay attention to how the mechanics work, a lot of people don't do that (especially when it involves reading)

I may be biased but, repeaters, it’s just dodge and shoot, also if you’re unaware about repeaters but the closer you are the more damage you deal with them

I have done it twice now, and I'm thinking it's a bug... Sometimes when i hit a behemoth with the sword and i jump, i jump like really high, and then it gives me an option to pull (like the chain blades), and i did the pull on the second time and i was stuck to the top of the behemoth until it did the enrage thing... I would really like to do it intentionally, but i dunno how to do it

I think you’re thinking of the mounting mechanic..? Possible only on the escalation bosses, plus fenroar and sporestruck charrogg. There is a vent on the ground that spawns after specific attacks from these behemoths. You can attack with light or heavy attacks during it, costing stamina. You can stay on longer by jumping/dodging off before you run out of stamina, or when the audio queue plays, and re-mount

You can “use” sword fairly easily yes, but it’s much harder to truly master than war pike would be

the only time i could be useful is to get an interrupt into a combo, but the hold heavy itself does next to no dmg

The other two people explained it pretty well, it’s really only useful for a safe gaurenteed interrupt, although at high skill levels, it’s better to find another way to interrupt that will not consume valor, as it is valuable
