Five fun facts about the history of the remote training collar:
- The first remote training collar was invented in the 1960s.
- These collars were originally designed for hunting dogs.
- The technology has advanced significantly over the years, allowing for more precise and controlled stimulation.
- Remote training collars are now widely used for obedience training and behavior modification.
When used correctly, remote training collars can be a valuable tool for helping dogs learn and communicate with their owners.

Fantastic interview! One thing I struggle with is keeping my dog Nika, in place when people come to the house. She gets way to excited, and to avoid any mishaps, I place her in her kennel until guests have settled into the house. I have trained her to place when hubby wakes up and comes down the stairs. Nika used to get super excited when dad got up, now she knows to wait until he is ready for her loving.

Really like this interview. It was really good. I, myself use the E-Collar. I’m 68 years old and I own a one year old American Staffy. Are used to compete in schutzhund back in the day. Koda is vey smart, hardheaded bullheaded doesn’t want to listen. That’s about it in a nutshell. But he’s moving right along in his training. I’m working on him to quit bird gazing you know like stargazing. A dang bird flies over he’s got his head up there looking up in the sky. He also has another little unique thing he likes to do, stick his nose up in the wind. He smells everything. I’m thinking bringing that nose down to the ground and teaching them how to track. Lol

Nate I like the authenticity of your approach to training. You truly understand the time and patience it requires to dog training. Electrical collar training takes your level of understanding before even thinking for anybody to pick up the hand held remote to consider training any 🐕 dog. In my opinion a strong level of solid hands on experience is a requirement. Timing is of the essence on training just on food training, it goes up exponentially when remote training comes into play. Food training is very forgiving, Electrical collar training IS NOT! Not everyone can even train a dog on food training because of terrible timing and inconsistency. Only a hand full of owners out of a full group can make it.

Love this! So insightful and I loved how you guys helped explain things better because I’ve had different dog training mentors that shy away from remote collars because they are in the purely positive camp and I feel like the reasons being that they don’t want to have to educate clients on correct use of remote collars or get the stigma of using those tools. It’s usually seen as so punishing and I was even nervous about it before. But now I see the nuances to correct and applicable uses for remote collars so I’d be interested in learning more about how to train off leash obedience with them. Very thought provoking! Love it!! Greatly appreciate continued education and willingness to talk about subjects that can seem taboo for some of the dog training community.

Both my dogs had ecollars on today when I went to a party. Almost everyone wanted to know what they're wearing . Some were like oh you shock your dogs, little did they know I was stopping the dog from jumping on them with a very low stimulation. Just enough to remind them what "Off" means. Tap on the shoulder says it perfectly.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
It makes me think of a quote by the American historian Daniel J. Boorstin “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” So many people think they know what a shock collar is and are quick to judge someone for using it, even though in reality they don't know anything about it. Perhaps you were able to educate a few people at the party. :) Thanks for sharing!

What a great interview!!! Learned so much. I got the idea 💡of running away as said in the video (and hide) to make my puppy finish to come to me to bring the keys. 😂👏 (I was trying to train her to bring the keys.) She was just coming almost, but not finished. Thanks to the video I got the idea 💡. Liked to know about the tapping vs continuous. That point was very interesting and important to know. It's a shame people don't have the knowledge and try it first the remote collar, before saying "it is a bad thing". And learned many details that might seem small, but big in importance. Hi Nate, great video Johnathon is such a nice guy. I'd be really interested in seeing you introduce the remote collar to a very reactive dog and watch the process. I would imagine it would be totally different from say a Labrador or retriever. I was initially trying my reactive cattle dog with the prong collar but found out it just made her more reactive when I gave her small corrections while she was in that heightened state.

Question first this is the very first that I’m learning and hearing about remote training collars. The one question I have is a remote collar accepted in areas where a leash is required? Like I said I’m just hearing about such a method of training. I use hand signals to train but this sounds like this remote collar sounds so great. Can’t wait to hear more
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that a remote collar can replace a leash in areas where a leash is required. Often I'll let the dog run around with the leash dragging and the remote collar on. When it says that dogs must be leashed, it doesn't say that you have to have the leash in your hand. :)

This seams so amazing and I just can’t wrap my brain around it. Cookie is 13 weeks and she has not walked with any collar. She fights flat collars and harness , so I’m doing something wrong excep if she starts fighting it I stop her and pick her up. But I need help fast. She is very skittish and scaredy cat- she runs from any strange sound and quick sound or movement. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have always had a supper bouncy quick to jump and she is opposite. Shy skittish, frighted of her shadow . She came from a large pack.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 9 ай бұрын
Firstly, I want to reassure you that every puppy is unique with their own temperament and pace of adjusting to new experiences. Cookie being skittish could be a combination of her inherent personality and previous environment, especially coming from a large pack. For the collar and harness issue, take it slow. Begin by just introducing the collar or harness to her without attempting to put it on. Let her sniff and investigate it. You can even place treats around it to create a positive association. Over time, and with patience, you can gradually try putting it on her for short periods, always associating it with positive rewards. Regarding her skittish behavior, it's essential to create a safe environment where she feels secure. Expose her gradually to new sounds, sights, and experiences. Instead of forcing her into new situations, allow her to explore at her own pace, rewarding her bravery along the way. Socialization is also key. You might want to consider puppy socialization classes where she can interact with other dogs and people in a controlled environment. These classes can help build her confidence. Lastly, remember that patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are your best tools. Celebrate her small victories, and over time, you'll likely see progress.

You mentioned in your q&a that you were leaving the park and arih was just laying down. You called her she continued to stay laying down. You corrected her and she came to you. Isn’t that negative reinforcement? As I understand punishment stops behavior. I know you were punishing disobedience. But is it positive punishment or negative reinforcement.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, positive punishment stops behaviors. The correction was stopping the behavior of not listening to a command. I said, “come,” she ignored me, so I said, “no” followed by a correction, then I re-commanded, and praised her for complying. If it was a low stim and I pressed it until she complied, then it would be negative reinforcement. Cheers! 😁

People assume an e collar, or electronic collar shocks the dog. It does not. Does your alarm clock shock you? Does your light switch give you a zap? Of course not! Its a way to get your dog's attention from a distance. If you cant handle a dog when its next to you, an ecollar will not help you handle the dog. Train yourself FIRST!

In many countries in Central Europe ecollars and prongcollars are strictly banned. Guess why? Learn basics about dogs. At least the ecollar is a tool of punishment. Everyone whos telling the opposite is a liar. And of course a remote collar can shock a dog. In USA everyone use ecollars, evey child push a button. If you need an ecollar to recall your dog theres everything wrong in your relationship.

@@saarlooswolfhund6237 the e collar is not a tool for punishment....at least I never use it that way. It's a way for me to communicate to my dog from a distance. Especially while out in the woods. 😊

Most people are simply to boring for their dogs to be interesting. In addition, they also don't invest into a reasonable amount of quality time with their dog. Without the feeling of togetherness, and without playing, how could a bond be installed? This is basic knowledge people need to have *before* they get a dog. I always give my dogs half of their food in their bowls, the rest with my hand.

Shock collars are cruel and abusive. Real dog lovers don’t use them. Would you use one on your child? No? Why use one on a dog? It’s not just me. Many experienced and learned dog behaviourists disagree with them, such as Victoria Stilwell. I have an NVQ in animal care. I have been learning about dogs since a child. But you don’t need to know a lot about dogs to know that hurting and abusing them is wrong.

Exactly. I'm a fan of this channel, but this vid here is not good. There's a reason why Shock Collars are banned in many countries in Europe, including my country. I have educated 46 years dogs :GSDs and since 15 years Wolfdogs I have never used prong or e collars. Purely Positive is not possible , a dog needs roles and boundaries and sometimes corrections, but its not necessarily using tools like prong or e collars. My Wolfdog actually walks offleash with very good obedience. Everything is relationship, every good dogtraining is relationship work. Disappointing.

@@saarlooswolfhund6237 I've trained my GSD on the Dogtra Arc e collar. She took well to it only being on a working level of 7. She is now transitioned to not wearing it UNLESS I'm out in the woods with her. I believe it helped strengthen her recalls because it's like muscle memory now when she hears her recall word lol. 😅

@@a.e.s.n. if you need ecollars to train a GSD (most easily trainable Willtoplease dog) ask yourself why do YOU need push the button? Whats wrong in your relationship? Why aren't you able giving your Willtoplease Dog a good recall? Why are all my Wolfdogs offleash without any buttons? 🤣
