I have a 3year old German Shepherd, I tried trainer who wanted me to be "firm" to the point that I was very uncomfortable essentially bullying my dog to listen. It was not sitting well in my gut. That focus-on-the-face exercise is a great idea. Thank you for the proof of it, too. I’m a newbie foster mom of a Lhasa Apso (13 yrs old), and so excited about training correctly and with dynamism. Not gonna lie, tho ... in public I feel odd using dog-training language and expression - the short, oft-repeated words/sounds, the perky upspeak of praise, and the animated movement to keep interest high, etc. - I actually like it but it’s so unlike anything I’ve done before and it’s in public. There are a zillion dog owners in my neighborhood, but most are silent up owners staring at their phones as their hobbled dogs drags them down the street. Even they (on occasion) look up from their phones and watch my new-to-me old dog. Thanks much for this video - very clear, helpful content. Looking forward to watching your intro training series.

After going through a "professional" group training with my 5 months old akita where manners and socialisation were supposed to be taught, but in reality it was obedience training, I was left frustrated because the dog would not listen at all. I didn't have high expectations for my dog as he is still a puppy, but I was none the wiser after the course. After seeing your video, I finally realised that no one taught us for to motivate and engage the dog. No dog will listen if they are not focused on you. Thanks a lot!!

@@wharnisbet -- It's okay to work on more than one behavior/trick at a time. I generally work on only one to two new cues but will usually rotate the new stuff with cues he already knows. That's just how I do it. 😉 I train a 3.5 yo Pomeranian. If you're training 2 or 3 things at a time, try to make them substantially different from each other to avoid confusing your pup. Example: down, shake, and sit pretty. Just an example.

He has a high prey drive when he sees birds so the engagement exercise will be great to practice with him, I can't wait to start it tomorrow. Yes, In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. This reaaly works! I do every lunch time this focus exercise with his dry food. About 5 minutes or so. He is a puppy of 5 minths. After only 2 days max he was conditioned. He licks his mouth when i say ´yes’ or ´free ´. He knows food comes. His focus is very high on me then. Howerver must be progressed to other places and activities. At this moment, i only do this in house.

Hi Nate! Love your videos. My wife and I recently Got an 8 week old German shepherd and I have been watching so many of your videos. Amazing content, I love your detailed explanations. My puppy doesn't have much focus right probably due to how young he is so I have begun engagement training along with socializeling him as well and building his confidence. A couple questions I have is what is a good age to begin engagement training and approximately how long does it take the average dog to become conditioned to the markers?

Thanks! I'll start as early as 8 weeks of age as long as the pup is comfortable in their new environment. I can get most dogs conditioned to the markers within 1-3 days. For you, it may be different depending on your timing. Since timing is so important, if you're off by a second, it can make the training take longer. In addition, the dog's intelligence, perseverance, and motivation will play a large role as well. I would suggest doing this exercise for three days, twice a day for 5 minutes. After that, spend 30 seconds to a minute of engagement training before each obedience session. This will help the pup become more engaged for each session, which will speed up the training. Lastly, even if he's not fully conditioned to the markers, by using them each day during obedience, he will become conditioned. I hope this helps!

I can’t use marker words with my pack. “Yes” triggers my male pit. Did between the ears training to attempt to help with his aggression. All it’s done is create fear and obedience only on point when I carry the spray bottle the trainer told us to use.

Also, In this video, you see how the first guy (little golden puppy), not conditioned yet, is kind of with you, but easily checks out and is really slow?? Awesome! Thanks for the support. You can try making your dog work for every bite of food. Here's a short section from my manual. Most dog’s low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward. A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time. @@NateSchoemer So funny you say all this to me! I have been taught this--I did try this--but it was so hard on ME! Also, when I was taught to feed by hand only, there were no extra treats--just his kibble. (as an 8 week old puppy and up until he was eating 2 cups of food per day, I DID hand feed his food and worked on tricks/obedience. The very first thing I did with him was work on Focus! I must have done something incorrectly, because I never!!! had the level of engagement/focus that you have with all of your dogs! :( I'm sure some of it is also being inconsistent; which I have improved on! Ace already doesn't eat his kibble, so it is hard for me NOT to Free Feed him! He can go 2, sometimes 3 days without eating! But, I will try this again. Thank you so much for replying!! I just received your book from amazon last night! I can't wait to dive into it! Also, I love that it is not a "huge" book! Sometimes when books are big (in pages), I don't ever finish them. When doing a training session with a dog, I like to incorporate multiple behaviors in one session. Meaning; in one session I’m not just working on one command the entire time, but rather multiple commands. I may start by asking the dog to sit, then a down, then heel, then a down in motion, followed by the center command, etc. This makes the training more fun and engaging for the dog. As a side effect, the dog learns faster. Also, when training I would suggest filming yourself. This will help you identify and fix mistakes that you may be making during training. Thanks Mohit! Yes, you can start at 7 weeks of age, but I usually start the training when the puppy is 8 weeks of age. I usually will do 1 - 3 obedience sessions each day. Each session is usually around 5 - 20 minutes, depending on what I'm working on and how new or advanced the dog is. 20 minutes would be the max I would do with an advanced dog. I keep the sessions really short for new dogs, so they don't lose interest in the training. :)

They usually become conditioned within a few days to a week. It depends a lot on your timing. If you are pairing the marker sound with the delivery of the reward, then that would slow down the learning process. Sometimes it helps to film yourself training to make sure you're not making any mistakes. Regardless I would start teaching behaviors with the physical cue, but before each session spend about 30 seconds on engagement training.

We just had a great time with this in the back yard. I lost him for a few seconds when a squirrel ran overhead, but he actually focused back up faster than usual :D I do have two quick questions that I would really appreciate your time in answering: I've seen your answers to other people saying that you train at mealtime and like to make dogs work for their food. Does that mean you are essentially giving the dogs their whole breakfast/dinner in the form of these rewards? Second, is there a 'too long' to have them make eye contact before rewarding them for it? I know eye contact can be construed as aggressive behavior to them, and River gave me a little bit of growling when I held out too long. (On the other hand, demanding is kind of his default state if I hold out too long on anything at all, which I'm sure will just take training him to wait in gradually larger increments and not reward him until he stops bitching, but it's becoming a looong process with him.) Thank you for being so incredibly generous with your time and knowledge. These videos add up to thousands of dollars worth of private instruction and you have done countless dogs around the world an invaluable service in making them accessible for everyone. I'm absolutely going to be buying your manual shortly!

This allows me to start spacing out rewards, so I don't have to give them as many as we do at the beginning of the training. 2) You can increase the duration for the eye contact as the dog becomes better with the exercise. I'm getting my first dog soon and I plan to implement your positive markers technique. However to correct behavioral problems you suggest using a correction such as "No". How do you condition a puppy to understand that the "No" is a correction marker?

Thanks! The sound "no" or something like "phooey" that tells the dog to stop what they are doing or to go back to the previous position. I do this by first teaching them leash pressure, then using the leash pressure to reinforce the stay command, then eventually turning the "no" into a correction. Quick question, when doing boundary training like not letting the dog jump out of the car until you say so, do you use the release marker "Free" even if you will not give them a food reward? Thanks! If I use a terminal/release marker then I pay the dog with the primary. When we have a dog in a stay, then we have three ways to release them from the stay. 1) Release word. This is a sound that lets the dog know they are released, but it doesn't guarantee a reward. This is why it's called a release word. As you know, a marker is only a marker if it predicts one of the four quadrants of operant conditioning. That's your positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishments. 2) Terminal/release marker 3) New command. I hope this answers your question. Cheers!

Thank you for the great videos and I have just picked up a copy of your book too. I have been working with my 4 year old rescue dog on your engagement training exercises. He is doing great but he is a very skittish dog (we know he was shot in the past but don't know much else about his previous life). If I make any kind of hand motion or move my hands up to my chin, he runs away from me. Sometimes he will run if I just give him a command. Any suggestions? I really want to build his confidence and he seems to enjoy training very much.

I first want to make sure I can get the dog to do the behavior with the physical cue the way that I like. One of my favorite dog trainers and mentor of mine Dave van Garderen would always say, "don't name it until you love it"! And I couldn't agree more, because when you add the command, the dog will perform the behavior the way they perform it when you name it. This is why my dog Arih performs everything with speed and motivation because that's how I got her to perform it before I named it. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)

Nate, I have a 4 month old rescue pup. She is super smart and tries to anticipate what’s next for the reward. The problem I have with her is that she will sit or down in her position, I will say yes and walk toward her to reward her. She stays in the position until I am 1 pace away and then she breaks it. When performing exercises with the dog whilst not having a reward readily available (showing tricks to friends or family spontaneously) I read in a previous comment that you shouldn't use Free or Yes because the dog will expect a reward when they hear this. So, without having a reward, you want to make your dog Sit from 10 feet away with the implied Stay. How do you distinguish between a continuation marker and a terminal marker when only giving verbal praise as the reward for a correct behavior? I hope this question makes sense. Sort of difficult to explain..

If I don't have a reward for the dog, then I'll just use verbal praise. You can also use petting as a reward, but many dogs won't see this as valuable as food or toys. Then if I wanted to release the dog, but without the reward, then I would use the release word. When I train dogs, I use the word "break". I hope this helps and thanks for the question. :)

These videos are great! Is there a sequence of commands that you recommend for a puppy? In other words, what are the first, second, third, etc. commands? Also, how do you manage your hands near your face if you use a clicker for a continuation marker instead of “yes”? And do you ever offer a verbal command for engagement? I’ve heard some trainers say “look” when they are asking their dog to look at their face, but in this instance, you seem to be relying on the food without a verbal command.

What do you use for the scent

Thanks! I was using lavender, but you can also buy scent kits online for nose work training. If you use any oils, just use one drop and don't put it in a location that the dog can lick the actual oil. Use a container with a cotton ball for the odor. If you want to put the odor on a toy, then put one drop on the inside of a lid container and keep the toy in the container overnight. This way the toy will hold the odor, but the oil wont be directly on the toy. I hope this helps! Cheers!

Thanks, Sergio! As long as the Yip, sounds different than the yip yip, then you should be fine. Meaning; make sure the rise and inflection in your voice is different for each one so it's very distinct to your dog. A marker is just a sound that predicts a reward. So the marker pinpoints a moment in time when the dog is right or wrong. For example, "free" is a marker and it's letting the dog know they are correct and they are released and rewarded. Again, all the sounds we use for our dogs simply mean what they predict. You can use a clicker as a terminal marker or continuation marker. When I use a clicker, I treat it as a terminal marker and then I use verbal praise when I'm working on duration.

Thanks, I appreciate that! Correct! If you use a marker sound, you must reward your dog. A marker is a lot like a paycheck, and you never want your paychecks to bounce or they will loose the value. Same goes with the marker. If you want to give your dog feedback without a physical reward, then use verbal praise. That's like a boss saying good job to his/her employees. It doesn't predict a reward, but it still feels nice to know you're doing a good job. :) Thanks for the question!
