I love your videos. I've been watching for about a year, and it has really helped sort out a solid path towards cyber and pen testing. I'm going through INE's eJPT course right now. I'm currently a network engineer(DNS and IPAM), and have only been in IT for 2 years. (Network engineer isn't the right title for this job, but I'll take it) The biggest problem I have is impatience. I want to learn everything now. The second is choosing the "best" program to follow. There are so many great programs, but I can't escape the FOMO of other potentially better programs. Such as Cyber Mentor, John Hammond, David Bombal, as well as other cybrary and udemy creators. Something I've realized is that as long as you start somewhere, anywhere, you're farther along than you were yesterday. That's something to be proud of. Thanks for your content. I do consider you a mentor. Excited for what you post next.

Hey Brian, thanks for your kind words. I am as impatient as they come, it’s not necessarily a bad thing! Use your impatience as fuel to learn faster. It honestly doesn’t matter what you pick, as long as you stick with it and put 200% efforts in it. Finish your eJPT then do eCPPT then OSCP for example and you’ll be solid!

I really appreciate your recommendations especially your advices regarding the different paths for blue team and red team. I am about to graduate and get my Bachelor’s in Computer Science. I am also currently working on the Google Cybersecurity certificate. I like this certificate a lot since it is very beginner friendly as you said. My question is which should I take first the Practical Ethical Hacker or the Blue team level 1? I want to be an ethical hacker/pentester, but I am also not sure if it is for me. Also, another question, would it be faster to get my foot on the door of cybersecurity through blue team like cybersecurity analyst or SOC analyst? I really appreciate what you do and your videos. hey mate, if you want to be an ethical hacker there is no point doing blue team cert. Yes, it might be slightly easier to land a security analyst role than a pentesting role because there is more of those around :)

it depends on what the ‘basics’ mean. it will certainly take you from the ground up. There will definiteky be things there that will be difficult for you but so what? it’s part of the process! each time you come across something you have no background, do research and you will find the answer. Holder of both certs here, there's no strict order, but I'd say OSCP first then CRTO. OSCP is a beginner cert for pentesting which teaches you the fundamental skills for hacking. While CRTO is Red Team oriented (more focused in Red Teaming skills with an emphasis on Cobalt Strike usage, and yes, there's a big difference between pentesting and red teaming), creator of CRTO would assume you have the basic skills when it comes to hacking (especially Windows Active Directory)

While some red team engagements may include webapp exploitation, they're not close whatsoever. Most of the time, for a web app pentest, you are given x days of billable work to pentest a web app, with the goal of identify as many vulnerabilities as you can, along with PoC. A red team engagement does not test the vulnerabilities but assesses the security posture of the whole company/organisation with a pre-defined goal, including external security, internal security, security products (AV/EDRs, DLP), and security processes (managed SOC).

I have been tasked with creating our security stack and selling to clients/managing our cyber team within our business. What do you suggest I do to move into this role better? that’s a tough one. it seems that your role is more sales focused? or are you going to be implementing those solutions? Either way, a generic solution is to do comptia security+ followed by CySA+. I am tasked with both essentially, to make the sale and then to follow up with the implementation and also the monitoring/ongoing work of managing the tools also (I have a team I can delegate work to so it isn't all just for me to manage). I'll definitely have a watch of that and a look at those certifications also! I believe the plan would be for me to be managing a SOC for our clients (or atleast co-soc with a third party) to keep on top for our clients. If my main role once deployed is to prevent/remediate attacks using the new security stack I deploy, is a SOC analyst the type of training I want to be learning so I can be better at monitoring? you can’t become a good pentester without programming knowledge. Big part of Pentesting is exploiting vulnerabilities in software, so you need to understand how code is written. You don’t need advanced programming skills but you need basic skills

when did I ever called out people as liars? don’t put words in my mouth. Watch the video properly, I clearly said in anither video that some companies won’t hire you without a degree and that’s a fact. Some will. For Pentesting, it’s a very specific skill that many people are willing to overlook ‘degree’ if you have thr right skill/training. The world is not black or white, the truth is a lot more nuanced.
