Some of the biggest issues i've encountered is that the fundamentals specific for something like anime models are not really clear and people will say go research "it" and just gesture to everything, I would want to be more fluid but when most of the time it comes out wrong it's irritating to have no idea what the issue is. It would be nice to have something for what to look out for with the do's and do not's that come from experience because otherwise it's a lot of trial and error that can teach the wrong fundamentals

Exactly, and it's frustrating. No one has released a full and complete step by step tutorial from modeling to rigging and animation. It's so stupid. Do people want their knowledge to die with them or something? JUST SHARE.

12:38 this statement is very good. I am sometimes confused when my classmates always ask about many things (about 3D software) but they stick to the answers to those questions. but I like it when someone explores 3D software on their own and only asks questions when they feel stuck, it makes the knowledge gained even more impressive because you understand it thoroughly. (Sorry for bad english, i'm using google translate)

For people saying ucupaint or cycles baking or whatever other method, at the start of the video I specifically say "here's a cool way" implying this is just one of the ways doing it, it's not the best it's not the worst, it's just one of the ways you can do it.

I think is actually a good thing to have those kind of tutorials that tell you how to do things in a certain way, it could be even a little necessary. I understand what you say, its important to be fluid, being able to do things by instinct, like you dont know how to explain it but it comes out naturally because you understand how it works, and just do it, but doing things just like that by mere instict, comes first by knowing how to do things following "a rule". Obviously, its not good if you just learn the tutorial and use what you learnt there for everything, as you well said, every model is different, may be that tutorial you saw works for one model, but for others you need a loopcut more, or less, may be you need to add something that is not in the base model so it might change, but there is where the struggle and thinking should come, people shouldnt restrict themself with "you should make exactly 6 loopcuts here and there", but almost saying like "just figure it out everything" is not better. Asking is good, the problem is when people learn something and they just learn that and try to keep using that for everything, but a really good way to learn is exactly doing the way others do things, you start from there, then you change it acording to your needings, there is where you start being fluid.

Shonzo, I always like your videos because they actively discourage the way I usually learn how to do stuff. I made a fuecoco at some point awhile back, that came out decently well (a little chonky on the sides and a few other minor issues, but I was still happy with it). I think I've gotten better after your videos than with people who try to teach a specific way to make stuff.

it's worth noting that the combine textures method works because the material is an emissive material, unaffected by the scene's lighting, and that the color management is set to "standard" because the default setting alters the colors when rendering (and if you want free models to study, you can find some models from the game Genshin Impact or you could get the MMD models from hololive)

Bro, your videos and 3D models are excellent. I've been watching your time-lapses for a while now. Could you please make a video about texturing? Specifically, about the best order to draw outlines and shadows, highlighting shapes, and how to create unwraps effectively, and so on. Blender's toolkit for image editing is somewhat limited; it lacks layers like Photoshop does, so you have to get creative to design something from scratch. Also, I'd be interested to learn more about your background. How long have you been involved in this field? How did you learn? What inspires you?

5:00 question why not just use the baking tab in blender? If you select the render engine as cycles, then you can set the output of those maps as the shader output and in the bake tab select emit for the bake type. Then select what you want to bake, go into the shader and make a new bake texture and select that and then you can hit the bake button. This doesn't even have to be on stuff that is flat to so you can just select the main model and bake it like that. Then using the margin settings you can fill in the blank space of the baked texture. Will say though it is a little bit more convenient for export since it just the render image. Still great tutorial have a good one!

Unfortunately, I feel that most people fail at getting into 3D modelling and especially animation because they lack the patience to learn it. Most of us that get good with it do a lot of research, reverse-engineering or ask around in the community for something specific and don't leave projects unfinished. With the TikTok era, I wouldn't be surprised if there's far less people interested as well.

Can't you just combine textures in photoshop? Or at least in compositor. Rendering means dealing with resolution changes, color spaces distorting colors, etc.

Been thinking about this particular thing for my current model project right as this video dropped. I could be missing the point though as I can't quite figure what the advantage is to doing this versus loading an art program and merging the layers in that?

if i am not Mistaken the Add-on Does not have Merge Layers.. im not 100% Sure since i don't use the Add-on at all.. (Or haven't Texture Paint in quite a While now).. if you Paint using the Add-on you have to find a Way to Merge "Texture A" (Out Line) with "Texture B" (Color)... You could Export it to a Painting Software "Recreate" the Effect using those Individuals Layers and then Merge them... but then Headaches pop out as Multiply in blender is Slightly Different from X painting Software... You Could do what you are Doing - use Painting Software from the Start, but not Seeing the Result in the Model can Become Quite a Headache...(at least for me it is hehe...) and the whole Import Texture and Refresh... theres also "Bake" Albedo option Inside of Blender... which i am not sure why he has not Tested it out... it takes longer to bake than to Render it but it does Preserve its Emisive Nature of the Material... (Maybe it does not work? haven't tested it out). But this Option from Shonzo Prevents lots of the Common Headaches... and its nice to work in a all in one software Especially when it comes to more Complex Models... but to each to they're own if it works don't fix it

I use the bake method. It's really simple. Create a node in the shader with an image texture. Attach an UV node with the model's UV to it, click the texture, go to the bake options on the right side of Blender, select only the diffuse box, and bake it. The empty texture will turn into a combination of all the layers. For me at least it's easier this way, and doesn't clutter your scene with the huge Square and camera.
@DevasiaMentalityGaming
@DevasiaMentalityGaming 3 ай бұрын
@@MNTNHMESMO Yeah, I was thinking this too, but at the same time I was wondering if there was some kind of downside to baking that this method bypassed. About the only reason I can think of is it would require switching the render engine if you hadn't been working in cycles the whole time(which I don't) but even then it's not a drastic shift to switch engines, do the bake, and switch back once the new texture is saved, is it?
@DevasiaMentalityGaming
@DevasiaMentalityGaming 3 ай бұрын
Okay, so after testing various methods for myself I've concluded that the method used here is not really that good. Merging the layers in GIMP seems to preserve the base color the best while Shonzo's method makes the colors noticeably brighter than they would have otherwise. Baking sounded like a good idea, but uh... about 30 minutes later and the only answer I have is if it does work it takes far too f*cking long.
@MNTNHMESMO
@MNTNHMESMO 3 ай бұрын
@@DevasiaMentalityGaming Preferences I guess. For me, cluttering the scene with 2 more objects, adjusting sizes and all, all for merging layers is a tiresome deal. Opening another Program, importing the layers, and adjusting colors, is just as tiresome. For the models I make, the baking takes like 2 seconds, so It's a no brainer for me.

14:46 It's not ridiculous. There are room for both methodologies. You're so far in experience that you completely forgot about how a beginner mind works, like an adult that don't understand a child's mind. Mocking people that teach like that is ridiculous. Just like every 3D model is different, every student and every case is different. There's certainly room for a strict teaching methodology. Artists can not make informed decisions about when to break the rules if they don't learn the basic rules first.
