I've played piano for 10 years, and I have been a organist/pianist for my church for the last two years. In order to play, I've spent a ton of time practicing and got pretty good at sight reading hymns. After watching this video, I tried it and immediately was able to play countless hymns better and faster. I wish I had known about this sooner!!! I have tried this on other sheet music that I have and the results have been remarkable!!

I am 77, a retiree Missionary priest, beginning to get a bit forgetful, so a month ago I began to take online music lessons but found it a bit challenging. Just thinking of giving up, I listened to this video which has extraordinarily revived my drooping spirit. Thank you so much. You have me as a committed student.

This how piano should be thought to adults. I had over a year of lesson that showed me nothing, I already knew music theory and how to read music All they could seem to teach was endless scales. at 61 my clock is winding down I don't have time to spend years to learn to play. I am not looking to be a pro at playing but to at lest be able to play real music this got me playing as soon as my finger hit the keys.

Zach, you are truly a Godsend!!! I have up to Grade 3 formal training and had to give up due to financial strain at the time. But after all these years, I am learning to play the piano again. Better late than never. I love the piano! As a young person, my mom's dear friend moved away and she gave to me this book of hymns and recently I have tried to work out what these notes or chords are, but without any method of how to go about it. Today I watched your video, and well, I can only say that God has seen the desire of my heart. I am ecstatic about what you teach here. Bless you in abundance. Please do not stop what you are doing. I am a senior citizen now but still willing and able to learn and determined to get where I need to be to become a worship music pianist, just to play for our little Bible Study Group. Praise The Lord ! Thank you soo ...ooo ooo much. GOD BLESS YOU YOUNG MAN !

I was taught to play the songs exactly how it’s written for this reason I gave up on piano. Then I found the wonderful world of lead sheets which got me back into it again. Now in same way with lead sheet style as your showing here makes me want to get my hymnal out and look at my favorite church hymns

When sung by voice in four part harmony, the original harmonies are far superior. However, the piano is meant to complement the voice, and an interesting sound is appropriate.

In art there Is no wrong! One plays what one feels. The second style is the one I would play for my personal taste or for a solo. For a congregation I'd play a combination of the two styles. My Dad was an excellent musician so I hear every minimal changes in harmony. What I really want to learn from you is interesting rythms and hand coordination. I've played the piano for almost 60 years. An ancient and I still can't play some interesting new rythms. Thanks for being generous.

I have been playing piano for over 15 years, and when you said two versions I immediately knew that you were going to do an “as written” vs some rolling chord patterns. The beginner piano player definitely will be impressed by the second version, but I think it really depends on the song/hymn. Certain songs don’t require rolling chords and arpeggios to be interesting. Simple notes usually sound better in my opinion.

Version B is pleasant to the ear but should wait until after sight reading is taught. Maybe older persons should learn version B but every child should learn to read sheet music. The perfect musician masters both sight reading and ear playing. That is the road I am purposefully trodding.

I love the way you teach! Unlike most of the other videos that i've watched, you actually show visually what you are referring. You take time to display charts and circle the notes to reference what you are talking about. There are just too many videos where they just pound on the keyboard and talk about how it sounds correct without actually showing how.

Zach, like many here, I have watched several of your videos. But it wasn’t enough and I decided to purchase your teaching method and I just love it. I haven’t enjoyed practice drills, etc., but I do now because of the way you fashioned it. Years ago my mother-in-law was the practice pianist for an opera company and we would have discussions on sheet music. Because I wanted to learn jazz, she still insisted that I play just the notes on the page! I think jazz players would laugh at that, don’t you think? I love Church songs and for the most part I can’t play them well. What you give here helps. I’m not paid for this, but if you have the extra money, you would do yourself a service by purchasing the program he sells. I believe he has a 30 day guarantee. I’m only sorry I didn’t do this a few years ago as my time is short (June 5, 2021 I’m 77 years old). Amen.

Nice technique. If you have access to the guitar version, all the work is done--chords are printed right over the staff.and there is a single-note melody line. Also, the whole song usually fits on one page, because there is no bass staff. The only hiccup would be that the guitar version might be in a different key. But if the choir can sing in B-flat, they can sing in C.

Version A has the majestic block chord effect like the sarabands of classical music. Version B where you have broken the chords into arpeggios has the sweeter more tinkling effect of waterfalls. Hence they are both fine and left up to the artistic vision of the player. Or a particular occasion...by the way you could add one or two trills or mordant for effect. Nice job and keep up the good work!

Mood can affect which sounds better. I like them both, but there are times I dont feel arpeggios, and there are times where the block method is not appealing to me. Many times it depends on the mood. I notice that most traditional versions of a song use the block method whereas contemporary versions of the same song may use Arpeggios. By the way, I call basic hymn reading where you use solid chord the "block method",

I'm a rhythm guitarist and this is something I've been trying to tell my music director for YEARS! Just let me play the primary chords, and don't expect me to play a different chord on every beat!! To the expert musician, every single note on the page has equal importance. To the guitarist, it's REALLY hard to change chords that quickly and sound decent. For most hymns, the approach has been to omit the guitar. I sent this video to my director.

Thank you Zach for your videos and particulary this video you have patiently analyse the sheet to get the chords. I have been playing classical/folk guitar over 50 years, I understand guitar chords usually using the first chord in every bar. What I know is, the notes written on music sheet is for SATB singers (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass), if the pianist plays exact notes according to the sheet, the piano sounds no different to the choir sings. Moreover, it is too easy to make mistakes when our LH fingers move all the time.

Dear Zach: This is GREAT!! For over a year, I've been trying to learn from my Baptist hymnal, but what are all those notes? I finally figured out: the sheet music is for the singers, not the pianist. Your left hand patterns make so much sense! Ok, I get that the version 2 is easier, and I like the chord arpeggios, but I also like version 1. I will learn your version 2 first, then go back and tackle version 1. I strongly recommend that anyone learn version 2 first; there is a lot of music theory in that lesson! And, you can play it in church. Then go back several weeks later and learn version 1. What do you think? Bernie.

This was actually an amazing surprise. With all the cheat sheets this was a wiz to go through. I have been working with a course that uses lead sheets (chords already there and just the single note melody line of course). While it's easy having it laid out from the start what it doesn't do is tell you how to figure out the chords if you find a piece of music that isn't a lead sheet. Your video just explained how to figure out the chord (using the bottom note on the bass clef) in just A FEW SECONDS! After months with the other course I have been trying if the sheet music for a song I wanted to play wasn't in lead sheet form I would just have to skip the piece of music I wanted to learn because it seemed to complicated or impossible because the chords weren't put in front of me. After seeing this video I went back to a piece of music and using your method, was able to finally play it because (again, using your method) was able to figure our the chords for the entire song in MINUTES. What an AMAZING gift. Thank you with all my heart, and I mean that sincerely.

You probably know the actual name is "Church Hymnal" produced by the Church of God by their printing house "Pathway Press". And affectionately called the Red Back. Certainly, some hymns are slow and sacred while others are upbeat hand clapping toe tapping songs. You're right, in the South we sing them fast! Lol.

Our church in Philadelphia sings like we’re southern. Slides, twangs and hyper speed! I love it. But wonderful grace of Jesus is a true finger workout when we sing lol. Same with Victory in Jesus.

By itself, version two sounds better, but you have to be careful how 'flashy' or whatever you play it, because then it detracts from the meaning of the words, and then its 'just a piece of music'. Other than that, I enjoyed the tips; it helped me a lot for my practice.

Yea at the end fo the day it comes to preference. Most people like version 2 better, but if you're more of a purist for the lyrics you might like A better.

@c fedyszyn I think it depends on the church. There might be some churches that are more old-school and like the very meditative music, but from my experience MOST churches by far like when the music is a bit flashier, and have some spice to them. But to each their own!

Hey Zach. Brilliant. I search endlessly for simplified ways to play piano. This is one of the best. I dont want to practice every day but need a simplified system just like this where i can just take the melody and easily see matching chords. Obviously the 2nd version is massively better. I think the only people that may prefer the first are traditionalists who want to hear it the way they always hear it. One request of if may. The vid got to the point where arpegio patterns were used then seemed to stop far too abruptly. Any chance you could do a follow on video showing more detail on matching arpegios to songs and how different the songs can be made to sound, or how similar to and recognising the original pattern (mainly for pop songs i suppose like Imagine etc). I see the patterns available in your other video but how to select the best fit, and more detail of using them in your example songs would go a long way towards rounding off this truly excellent video. @@becomeapianosuperhuman6765 Thanks for the reply Shaun, but I already went there (money patterns) and studied it intensely. That was also excellent BTW. I dont consider myself a 65YO slow learner (which I very likely am to an extent), but that didnt seem to cut it. I feel that for it to sink in it needs a bit more immersion exposure - more detail in application examples and direction guidance in next steps - or wait till I am a bit more experienced. I feel a but rudderless now in how to progress and capitalise on it. Im not a beginner, at all but do lack play experience. I easily understood all the theory aspects). Maybe its only me, in which case OK. but I wonder if maybe significant amounts of others are in the same boat. Nevertheless, brilliant as far as it went. Thanks again.

@@becomeapianosuperhuman6765 Already did that, thoroughly - Excellent too BTW. It was a while ago, maybe I will have another look. I dont consider myself a 65YO slow learner, but maybe there is some truth in that (LOL). I had no probs at all with theory aspects and totally understood everything, though I do lack actual hands on playing experience. It seems that in order to fully get a take-away handle on it, I needed more detail in application examples and how to progress afterwards. Maybe just me, so ok. But maybe some others in my category too. Anyway, truly excellent as far as it went, and you cant cover everything in one video, so definitely no complaints. Top notch content. Very well done Zach! No need to reply I just wanted to give you, and clarify, the feedback. Thanks.

Easiest system for knowing the key signature I know (with it, you only need to memorize that C has zero sharps and F has one flat (Bb).: For sharps: The key signature is a half step above the farthest right sharp note indicated. For flats: The key signature is the second to last flat note to the right indicated. Example for sharps: Key of G - 1 sharp. (Half-step above F# is G). Key of E - 4 sharps. (Last sharp indicated is D#. Half-step above D# is E). Examples for flats: Key of Bb - 2 flats (2nd to last flat to the right is Bb). Key of Db - 5 flats (2nd to last flat to the right is Db). Another way to look at it is the key is a 4th below the note of the last flat. Try it. Super easy. So, just need to memorize that C has no sharp and F has 1 flat (Bb).

Version A is better (and must, I think) when we play it on organ, not on piano.... and we must use version A when we are accompaning a choir.... but when we are accompaning a one-voiced choir, so it doesn't matter to use the version B..... So, using these version depends on the choir we accompanied..... That's all what I'm thinking of.....

I think i have a faster way to know the scale, without the cheat sheet. flats you just the count fabulous bead. fbead. 1 flat is (f only f is f major,) the rest are flat majors, )2 flats is bflat, 3 flats is e flat, 3 flats are eflat major, 4 flats are a flat major, 5 flats are d flat major. so for example this song had two flats, and we are counting from f,b so it is in b flat major. sharps you reverse it, gdaeb. one sharp is g major, two sharps is d major, three sharps is a major and so on.4 sharps is e major and 5 sharps is b major.

Your version is cool and nice for beginners, I like that. The reason I'm learning hymns is actually solely for the purpose of learning to change 4 notes simultaneously. I am an advanced student and I believe this skill will help me reach new heights. Always work on what you're worst at, and you'll be making solid progress. But my goals are very high, so I do like you helping out people who just want to play something that sounds nice without working forever at it. Nice video. :)

Hi Zach, You are a genius!, the best piano teacher ever seen on KZbin. I like your detailed baby-steps teaching style. You are an optimist too and full of excitement and you are not a bad singer as you claim lol. I have come to love the song Cruise of Florida-Georgia Line, just because you sang and played it, sir. Thanks so much because You care about the pace and learning tempo of your learners and students. You also teach with real life applications on screen and make it better understandable to a dummy. Also thanks for the positive attitude to make us aware that we can do it. Best KZbin Piano Channel ever, teaching us one video at a time, but making us learn hundreds of songs at the same time. Thanks so much for the memory pegs and onscreen assistance. Keep it up Maestro!!!. Ps: I would like to learn how I can create the Chords Progressions into a Cheat Sheet for the songs in the SDA Church Hymnal. I saw you creating the Chords for How Great Thou Art but I could not follow that one in full but I am still learning
