Mike, at 14:00 he is faking the fast parts. He uploaded that video to KZbin too. If you watch the video at quarter speed around 23 seconds you can see he's stopped playing notes, but another 5 or 6 tapping notes are heard.
@BecomeTheKnight
@BecomeTheKnight 5 жыл бұрын
Huh, interesting. It's tough to tell because I'm pretty sure the video isn't perfectly in sync (that tends to happen naturally) but I'll need to take another closer look at that.
@darkdudironaji
@darkdudironaji 5 жыл бұрын
@@BecomeTheKnight I just watched it again, it's actually closer to 2 or 3 notes. He seems to be tapping perfectly in time and then stops for a slide and a couple more notes continue to play. But, listening to it a quarter speed, you can more clearly hear him actually strumming. So, I think he might actually be playing it for the most part. Just supplementing a bit.

That thing he said about loosing subscribers because he “sucked” after a speed test is exactly why I hate a lot of the metal community online. There’s so much egotism and bullshit surrounding it that people forget that, as long as something sounds good, it’s fun to play, etc, the rest of the shift doesn’t matter. Let’s be honest, you might be the fastest guitar player in the world but realistically, that’s just gonna be a party trick because you can’t have a song at that tempo if no one else can keep up

you kinda missed the point of why this whole issue is a problem. when someone like jared who has like 2.6mio followers on youtube and 600k on insta and whatnot releases a video calling someone fake without proper research or contacting the one in question (which he both did not do), he exposes them and accepts that some % of his followers will mindlessly harass those people. with that many followers he has to take that into account before releasing a video which can potentially ruin peoples careers for something they might not have done. apologizing afterwards is no use. he has to think about shit beforehand.

Yeah he should have, but he made a mistake and apologized. And it's understandable that he was hearing mostly a backing track or whatever it was so it wasn't completely false. He thought there was a discrepancy between hearing/ seeing. It was false that he wasn't playing it on stage at all though. See Steve Terreberry was smarter, he actually made funny videos on obviously fake things. Jared set out to do it more seriously and got into trouble, although I don't think he didn't research at all, or knowingly made false accusations. His channel will suffer a bit and maybe deserved, but doesn't have to be a career ending thing.

I compare "fake" guitar playing to lip syncing. Most audiences and even artists will hate on lip sycning because it makes the artist sounds cleaner or more talented than they are especially live especially when what they are syncing is a refined and edited studio recording. This sort of guitar playing should be viewed the same way for at least an authentic pov, especially when it is passed off like as if this is the way the Instagram guitar could play in front of a crowd imo. Pretty much why Queen or Oasis or Nirvana refused to indulge it on Top of the pops.
@danzgalliwag
@danzgalliwag 5 жыл бұрын
The difference is that lip synching is almost always exclusively used in a live setting. This type of guitar playing is being considered in the Instagram guitar circle and so far hasn't been heard of live. I think an apology is necessary because guitarists who are falsely accused can well and truly lose endorsements. That's their livelihood and their bread and butter. Brands don't want to be associated with an artist that is in the middle of KZbin drama. I think there should be some accountability when you have random people with a public platform pick apart your playing with no proof. At the end of the day, it's not Manuel's fault that his playing looks glitchy and it's not his responsibility to perform in a way that looks more digestible for guitar bros.

In the 70s, Angus Young had Ken Schaefer rip the guts out of a Schaefer Vega Diversity System wireless pack, cut a hole in the back of the guitar, and solder that shit in there. Reason Angus liked to go out into the crowd and kids would pull out his cable The family Jewels DVD box set has a live video of the boys playing "Riff Raff" and you can see Angus' backup cable dangling around next to his strap and its button. The actual input jack itself unused. I'm pretty sure I also remember hearing somewhere that his guitar had an additional input jack mounted on the rim of the body in an attempt to have a back up connection that kids couldn't unplug as easily. What I'm saying is that although it seems highly unlikely, it is possible that the man in the video has something else going on

For half of my bass videos I've recorded the playthrough in a comfortable position and get it as perfect as I can in one take, then I set up for the aesthetic playthrough and actually play there too, but I usually use the audio from the perfect playthrough. I played both, so why not choose which I use? For the the other half I just recorded the video and audio at the same time. Never speed anything up. I have been playing on and off for 25 years now. I always wanted to hold myself to the standards of Becker, Vai, Blue Saraceno, Satch, and others in the shredder world. I have learned that over years and years of playing and on and off time, that I play for my standards now. I am with you Knight. I want to play what my heart feels, what my mind comes up with. I am going back to basic at this time, just to incrase my playing ability. When you take the ego, envy, pride, and holy than thou approach out of your mindset and your playing, your mind becomes more clear. It is no longer, "Oh, I am depressed and dont want to play, because i cant play all the parts of Cliffs of Dover at speed." "It's okay, I can play all the parts, I can play them half speed, that was fun to learn, now can I push a little more to 3/4's the speed?" Speed does not make everything better. I would rather hear a guitar that is speaking from it's player's soul, than licks and scales at 200bpm. Just me.

Hey dude, I wanna say thank you for this video. I can honestly say I’ve never re amped guitar pro into my music, never sped up a video, and I also don’t even care if others do, because musical composition is far more important than technical proficiency, so in my opinion it doesn’t matter if people do this for a few social media followers. I’ve toured, I have 3 (going on 4) signature guitars out, and I have some of the coolest, most supportive fans I could ever ask for. I’ve also dropped a ton of camera audio stuff, and some totally naked no backing track stuff, but unfortunately the hateful people on here pretend it doesn’t exist, which only proves further that the hate is really about their own inadequacies, and nothing to actually do with me. I also delete toxic hateful comments and block rude people because I don’t need people like that stinking up our community. This is pretty common for brands to do. It’s like if someone graffitied obscenities on a window or wall at a business, obviously the owner would remove that. Anyways cheers! 🙏🍓

This guy Charles is an amazing guitarist, but also he is obviously not always honest about the playing. Just because you can play some of your stuff doesn't mean it's okay to release dishonest clips and then say, "but i have actual legitimate stuff so it's okay". If you can't play your stuff like on the record, it's not a big deal, you just need to admit it. This is the big issue. I remember growing up I learned from my brothers friends and I remember just trying to impress my brother was all I cared about. The friendly competition isn't a bad thing. But it's just got to such a toxic level like as I got better and started playing gigs I remember finding badass players to jam with. I learned once I started playing the blues scene that there is always someone better. It doesn't depress me anymore it inspires me. The best compliment ever isn't about my guitar playing it's always the people that said "I can feel what your playing". Be you rock you.

Most definitely if you aren’t inspired by those that are better than you you’ll never be a good guitarist. If you’re one of those that would rather give someone dirty looks and pout rather than perhaps asking them how did you do that.. When you take lessons the teacher is more than likely a lot better than you. That should just inspire you to work harder!! There is no shortcut no matter how often you hear supposed teachers claiming that they’ve broken some code that no other guitarists has ever discovered. The improv solo cheat sheet!! WTF is that??!!! Or when they say you don’t have to learn any theory or scales and arpeggios!! Total BS !! Where do you think the ideas for solos come from?? Duh scales and arpeggios bends and slides obviously!!! Blow smoke up some one else’s butt!! Don’t give guys and girls that are just starting out some false crap like that!! Improv solo cheat sheet!! Lmao that just sounds so ridiculous to someone that’s been playing over 30 years!! Just trying to make money you are!!

I've been into metal for over 4 decades, been playing guitar and bass for about 3 decades. I know a lot of musicians, and many, many times more metal fans. I don't know any fans that will go out of their way to listen to the fastest, most technical and intricate for the sake of technicality and intricacy, ultra clean, ultra precise, perfectly aligned to a grid, and conforming to the, "rules and constraints," of music theory, thing they can find. Aside from my 14 year old nephew, who started playing guitar 7 months ago, NO ONE in my extended social network would listen to something like that more than once, just for the novelty of it. Music, to the vast majority of human beings, needs to speak to you in some way, and something that's hyper fast and hyper tech, almost automated sounding, just doesn't speak to most of what humanity is. "Look at how fast and how technical I can shred!!!" is great, I'm sure you worked super hard at developing that ability. But chances are, at most shows you play, the more you take time to hyper-fast and hyper-tech shred, shred, shred, the less, less, less, your audience is going to pay attention to what you're playing. I've seen it for decades. Even as a musician who has great appreciation for virtuosity, I can only listen to so much shred playing before I just yawn and move on to something else. Guitar solos, and for that matter a solo on any instrument, can be incredible, it can be a great way of making a musical statement, of expressing yourself, but if all you have to say, "is look at me, look at how fast I can shred, look at how technical I can shred, look at me, look at how fast, look at how technical, look at me, look at how fast, look at how technical..." there's only so many times that a person wants to hear that same thing being said. Now, if you're somebody who can play fast and technical but you feel the need to speed up playing, and put that out there as your actual playing, that seems like trying to compensate for some serious inadequacies and serious insecurities. No matter how fast do you play, no matter how technical, no matter what is put on that video hyping it up, it's not going to cure, nor will it even cover up for what is lacking. But that's just my opinion and it's just his irrelevant and pointless as anyone else's opinion online.

Theres an accelerated progression in musical development over the last 100 years. You can listen to perfect performances from your favorite bands as many times as you want for your entire life, and i think this starts baking music and musical ideas into our subconscious and allows musicians to propel their own creativity farther than it ever would have otherwise. From what ive seen of your playing, if you were teleported back to the 1970s you could probably be a pretty renowned rock/metal guitarist. My 2 fav things about this video - when you said you posted your speed test AND how inconsequential any of that is because the ONLY THING that truly matters is "can you speak with your instrument". Unlike most of you your subscribers (yes, I'm unfairly pigeonholing your audience) my interest in shredding is relatively tiny. But my attention span for brilliant music is vast regardless of what genre or style you play. Too many kids focus on speed and forget that what they're playing isn't very musically interesting. People should be encouraging each other to keep going and to get better and not trashing each other simply because they aren't Eddie van Halen. The fact of the matter is that no matter how good you are, no matter how fast you can play, there will ALWAYS be someone out there who is better and faster. It's a fact of life and there is nothing we can do about it. At the end of the day, you do your best to make the guitar into something that makes you happy and helps you to express yourself. I barely even understand the appeal of the "shred community". Yes, it's impressive that people can play that fast, but speed and cleanness are but a single aspect of technical playing that is to be respected. What _else_ can they do? Is their pinch harmonic game strong? Their bend game? Vibrato? Phrasing? Can they write memorable melodies? Solid harmonies? Do they have a working knowledge of chord qualities _beyond_ power "chords" (which is basically required in metal now if you want to add any 'mood' to your riffs and thus be able to stand out)? There's so much more to playing/writing impressive sounding music than "GOTTA GO FAST! CHILI DAWGZ! YEAH!"

I know this is an old post but I just wanted to agree. Sweep picking is great. Power chords are great. But this music seem to just some sweep picking followed by a couple of big power chords, then more sweep picking. All with those awful drum loops. There seems to be only one song in this entire genre. Only other guitarists are remotely impressed by any of this. A friend and I always used to say, when watching somebody show off on the guitar, 'yeah, it would be great to be able to play like that, and then not play like that'. I really, really don't get this music at all. I keep trying to find something I like as I know there are some talented guitarists in the scene, but all I ever hear is sweep picking and, dare I say it, it all sounds the same ;-)

Seeing modern guitar players a decade younger than me destroy me on and instrument I’ve spent 18 years on is difficult at the best of times. But I’ve learned to lean into my style while working on my weak points. At the end of the day techniques should serve the composition and not the other way around. And that’s how I’m able to still do my thing in a world where everyone is a virtuoso 😊 I hope that if a kid reads this they don’t put away their instrument but they keep going. It's not about how fast or technical you can play. Its 100% about What you play and When you play it. Which is probably the most important thing for a musician to learn. Way more important then a 6 string descending sweep pick into a tap then pull off into string skip ascending sweep legato thing. Jared should apologize. He should do damage control because he did damage. At least two of the people he flat-out accused have basically proven that they're legit. Jared had a responsibility to make sure he wasn't fullashit before going online accusing people of being fake. Lucas says he lost an endorsement because of Jared's video. That's not "it's all cool bro", that's borderline defamation. I love Jared, but he needs to cool his heels before calling anyone out. Iphone cameras and web cameras are not forensic, for a reason. Lucas has explained that it doesn't sound like his guitar because the video was recorded with audio from a stage monitor that was playing a backing track only, and not the live feed. THAT is why you need to make sure you find the actual FACTS before making accusations. The recording literally doesn't have his guitar on it which is why it sounds like it's not his guitar.

@@Numenorean921 It seems like all the pieces are there, though things get very tricky when the plaintiff (lucas in this case) is a public figure. A jury would have to be convinced that Dines was reckless with the truth or sought intentionally to harm Lucas The statements implying that Lucas was faking it are opinion, which isn't necessarily something you can sue over. However, Dines holds himself out as the kind of person whose opinion on the subject is reliable. He's viewed as something of an expert, so his opinion holds more weight than yours or mine would. The statements are provably false (Lucas did a response video in which he pretty much proved that he is capable of the kind of speed he's accused of faking -- and could most likely perform the feats in a courtroom. Lucas has claimed exactly the kind of harm that defamation seeks to protect against -- he lost a business opportunity (which he either would or would not be able to prove in court). There is an element of *per se* defamation that extends to publicly accusing someone of being incompetent at their job -- not "he's a shitty player", but "he fakes his abilities and yet sells lessons or products based on his abilities". So even if he couldn't prove the loss of an endorsement deal, he could argue that this is defamation *per se* and that damages should be presumed. If he was an unknown who suffered a loss from Dines' statements, that would probably be enough at least to get inside a courtroom or negotiate for a substantial settlement to keep it out court. But since Lucas is a public figure by choice (he publishes videos showing his talents) and since "fake guitar video" is a current matter of public concern, he'd have to prove what's known as "actual malice" on Dines' part -- essentially that Dines acted with a reckless disregard for the truth. It is a very difficult standard of proof to have to meet, arguably harder than the "reasonable doubt" standard in criminal law. Personally, I think at least the skeleton of such a claim is there. Dines could have spoken to Lucas about it, or given him an opportunity to respond instead of just saying "it's obvious he's faking" (referring to the live video that Lucas explains came from a stage monitor intentionally set up not to play Lucas' guitar DI but the backing track he was playing against). It would not have taken Dines any significant effort to verify whether or not what he was seeing was what he claimed it to be. But that's something a jury would decide if this ever did get to court. Defamation isn't my field, though, and I'm no more an expert than any other idiot with a JD.

The one that makes me sad is the mentioning of Stephen Taranto. That guy deserves more positive attention for his guitar playing. He should be mentioned up there with some of the greats of today but his name is getting tossed around in the filth of these weirdos doing mimed playthroughs and sped up material. It’s sad.

I‘m a bit surprised that this hasn’t been mentioned (unless I have missed it), but at least in the case of the first guy the reason that it looks so fake to me is clearly a framerate issue. I‘m too lazy to do the math, but I‘m certain that the rakes he‘s doing (probably 32nd notes?) at this speed can impossibly be reproduced adequately by a camera recording at 60 or even 30fps. You‘ll probably end up with something like two frames per note or possibly less, so of course it‘s not going to look fluid. Add to this possible encoding and / or conversion issues when preparing for publication, and there’s no chance it‘s going to be an accurate reproduction. Right? Edit: Math example (please correct me if I‘m wrong): Assuming a tempo of 120bpm, that would be 120x8=960 32nd notes per minute = 16 notes per second. So recorded at 30fps that would be less than two frames per note.

I'd take another look at the Berried Alive "raw take" video. Those out-of-tune bends are just coming from the sound of his strings in the room, not a guitar signal. The audio is just the track. There are two main giveaways that I've noticed. One is at the end of the video, when he makes slide noise on his strings after the track has stopped. His volume is incredibly low compared to the track and the tone is completely different. But Charles actually pointed out the biggest giveaway himself, oddly enough. There's a section of the solo where he uses a killswitch....and the guitar in his hands doesn't have a killswitch. At first viewing, I was also misled. The fact of the matter is, Charles is one of these players that is making a career out of people thinking he's better and cleaner than he actually is and he'll go to any length to preserve that perception of himself from his fans. He got scared for a second and made a drunken video (which has now been removed) of him back-pedaling, saying that anyone criticizing those for faking their guitar work are expletive, expletive, expletive. Nice. Really mature way of handling the rather serious accusation and still not answering it one way or another. He goes to great lengths to attempt to prove his misrepresented abilities one day, and then he'll back-pedal and justify fakery without even owning up to it on another day. Miles Demitri Baker, ex-Rings Of Saturn, made a video calling him out and addressing the "raw take" video. The sad thing is, Charles is obviously a great guitarist. Nobody is a machine though and it's a shame that he's gotten so deep into a career based on false expectations of his audience that he has to walk this tight-rope while these accusations come out and the silent majority finally begins a dialogue about him.

@@theperfectcircus That’s great if you enjoy his music. He’s talented and prolific for sure. I do give a fuck how he represents his abilities because reaching a level of ability on an instrument is something people take pride in and blatantly muddying the waters of what’s real and what’s production in this area is touchy. It seems that the success of his brand has relied on the “wow look at that crazy guitar playing” factor of his music and the marketing of the playthrough videos. People seem to have different expectations of what these videos represent, and that may be where the issue lies really. If your music is composed and edited in a manner that can’t be realistically replicated in an actual performance, why bother making a mimed performance video to accompany it? Why not some other type of promotional media? I’ll tell you why. Charles knows his niche and he’s chosen to make dissonant, shred-centric music that primarily appeals to guitarists who admire technicality. One could argue that it’s the primary component of his compositions and common appeal amongst his fans. You might disagree. That’s fine. You can like his music for whatever reasons you choose and you don’t have to care about how he represents his abilities as a guitarist. But for some reason you’re still watching videos like this which is questionable. And to answer your question, I have released two of three albums so far this year. I’m not professing to have the the abilities as a guitarist or producer that somebody like Charles has. I don’t think one needs to surpass somebody else in ability or success or in order to have valid criticism. But if you insist, here’s a Spotify link to what I most recently released. Although you articulate yourself very well, I don't think that the "success of his brand" is hinged on just that one shredding element. I'm not going to try to prove anything because that is, as you know, a waste of fucking time. The rabbit hole is how I ended up at this video. With that being said, I did check out your music and I really want to applaud you for putting it up. I'm not going to start bumpin it I'm my whip but it definitely does not suck. The recordings are clean, the arrangements are cool and it's progressive....All cool shit. May your energy be balanced and put it into the things you love.

@@theperfectcircus Fair enough I go down rabbit holes on KZbin all the time. Calling you out for commenting on this video was unnecessary. And I’ll admit that me saying the main appeal of his music comes from the technical guitar work could be a little reductive. All I know is that most people come across Berried Alive because they saw one of their playthrough videos that was really impressive to them. But you’re right, the song-writing, production, and unique combination of genres are all elements that appeal to fans of Berried Alive and I shouldn’t ignore that. Thanks for checking out the music I shared and for the kind words. If this thread proves anything, I guess it’s that people can have differing strong opinions and feel the need to defend them against each other but can do so without personally attacking each other. I appreciate the discussion
