More seriously, Rammstein is really REALLY leftists for americans: They were all born and were raised into a communist dictatorship, were everybody had a work and was "protected" by the state (free houses, free medicine...). Even today; a lot of east germans have some bit of nostalgie when they remember this time. Of course, germans are well protected today, but every body needs to work.It was not working very well, but nobody was really poor. In the US, being a socialist is seen as extreme left, were it is quite normal in Europa. Rammstein is a bit more than socialist, but not really communist. Were NishiKun is right, it is that most of extreme right economic doctrines are very leftists. That's why Trump cannot support extreme left in Europa, it is not credible.
@marcbuisson24637 жыл бұрын
NishiKun17 That is sure, but brazil has a lot of problems that eastern germany didn't have. For example, eastern Germany was a major dictatorship, were police and secret services (propaganda too) were really powerfull, and organized crime (whereas black market) never came until 1990. Eastern Germany was also richer, even if nobody could be rich. Most of Europa is today some Sozialdemokratien, as Brazil, but we live better in Europe than in Brazil. Of course, there was big problems in eastern Germany, you could'nt have any political opinions, could'nt innove, and you were very often paid to do nothing, even though there was not enough products for everybody.

Funnily enough romanticism was born in Germany, ask Werther
@openmusic39045 жыл бұрын
But Romanticism as an artistic movement does not necessarily mean love, it means personal expression of all and any emotion in general, the exaltation of the subjective world of any given person. I mean look at Beethoven, he is considered the first Romantic composer and some of his music is full of anger and fury. That opening of his 5th Symphony, da-da-da-duuum, da-da-da duuum. That is one of the darkest openings in all of classical music. @@AliaslsailA
@AliaslsailA5 жыл бұрын
OpenMusic thank you for that astute observation, you make a very good point. Romanticism revolves around the very core of what it means to be human and that of course includes all emotions. Especially our helplessness being confronted with the sublime. I guess I was just saying that naturally, love and vulnerability are major motives in romanticism and that I have a hard time reducing german to the language of anger when some of the most heart clenching pieces I’ve ever read have been written in german. „Weltschmerz“, „Wanderlust“ and „Fernweh“ all describe the sensation of a deep longing and can’t even be translated. Beethoven’s 5th is about all of that, which is why it’s also called the “Schicksalssynfonie” which i guess would mean symphony of fate(?) and to me personally the fury in it is motivated by despair, it’s not just plain rage.
@openmusic39045 жыл бұрын
Yes that is a good point too, we can't forget about the famous impassioned lieder from the like s of Schubert and Schumann. I think in the case of German it is more the case that is is a very strong, blunt, and dominant sounding language oppose to angry, in and of itself. For me any intention, message, and emotion always comes across far more directly and forcefully when relayed in German. A German love song sounds like the most impassioned and bluntly adoring love song ever. An angry, despairing, and fury driven German song sounds like the most brutal, savage, and bluntly rage fueled song ever. German, as a language, seems very binary in that way. @@AliaslsailA

It's sad that that besides the shock value thing everything rammstein IS seems to get lost in translation. Because rammstein is all about the lyrics, and the videos perfectly tie in with them. They tell mean, dark, twisted little stories.And seeing them live is like going to a very bizarre theater.Reducing rammstein to a band that plays simple music and is all about shock value is totally missing the point.

I am well aware of what they' tend to do songs about, since I first started listening to them from the Lost Highway soundtrack before they even had a hit here. But there IS more to them than the schlock videos and freaky sex. Always has been. And those songs tend to be some of their best. Getting the old people to react to the OBVIOUS schlock videos was an easy way to go. I was disappointed they didn't have the balls to have them react to the songs where they had something to say. Or something like Ohne Dich. Or, one of the newer videos that shows their sense of humor. FBE has a bad habit of skipping songs that really show a bands range, in favor of the easy "OH MY!" stuff. 90% of the Songs by Rammstein have a big meaning behind them. Discussing recent events, politics, social problems and things that are difficult to talk about in the public. The smart and in my opinion brilliant thing is how they hide the meaning behind the lyrics. Most of the time their lyrics are modern day depictions of famous poetry. In many songs you can find rhymes from very famous works of poetry. But these rhymes and text passages also hide the real meaning and message of the song. I really like the way they tell us these Story's in their heavy way. :) Rock on 🤘

There is sooo much of these double meanings in the semantics in their lyrics and all on purpouse. How Till Lindemann composes his lyrics is really sophisticated. Combined with this rather primal or primitive music and melody they are able to generate some interesting contrast. And it's just sick music, pumps you up every time :D Rammstein has a song answering the Nazi accusations, its called "Links 2 3 4" referring to a marching rythm, but in the lyrics they very clearly position themselves more left. They played their game with the title though ^^ And the one guy saying a sentence in German did say what he claimed to have said :)

Even though it is quite funny, it is also a song to denounce sexual tourism, in particular maybe underage sexual tourism ("Too short, too tall, doesn't matter one size fits all" (short could be the girl, tall the guy or their penis) + "I can't get laid in Germany" -> The character is probably a German tourist asking someone rather small, like a teenager, for sexual favours)

First of all, he really said "this is very lousy". Also I am getting a bit salty over the way that in american videos about Rammstein its always about "shock value" and "pushing the boundries" when they are far too honourable to follow these shallow motives with their videos. They want to shine a spotlight onto topics wich are normally considered taboo or just to cruel to talk about - be it rape, child abuse or supression of same sex love. They dont try to create the shock value that doesnt exist, they take what is already there and just shine a spotlight onto it. Also nope they are definitively not Nazi, plus you should really go to a show if you ever have the opportunity to!
@fabiennemare2847 жыл бұрын

Maybe it is just because i am Austrian, and therefore understand what they are saying, and I have been listening to them for several years, but the songs of Rammstein have a much deeper meaning (at least many of them). Till Lindemann tries to draw attention to many different topicy and exceeds limits to do that. But if you don't understand German, i guess it's hard to get the full meaning of Rammstein.

The band gets even better when you understand the lyrics because Till Lindemann actually used to write poems and even published a collection of his poems as a book and you can really see that while listening to the Rammstein songs. Their songtexts are dark, deep and pretty poetic.

Well, I can only give my interpretation...so I will do that. When I first heard Rammstein it was when I was a lot younger. 'Du Hast' came on the radio on either Halloween or the days surrounding it. Was headed to a corn maze that night and I hadn't heard anything like it at the time. It's more so the imagery that music creates. I think maybe people either have a hard time describing things or they don't have many words to describe it other than scary. Possibly. Their older stuff I still feel is pretty dark, not scary per se. Music is something unique to everyone's mind. For me when I first heard them it was exhilarating and a little twisted. It reminds me of the dark road I was driving down that night I first heard them and the atmosphere of Halloween. It's one thing to compare music but another to compare what a band's image or outside actions are. I had a friend who was really into Gorgoroth. I can respect them, but I was never real into them as he was. If we're talking about just the music part of it though, I think we can agree that it makes people feel many things. Rammstein or Gorgoroth...different, but still capable of invoking fear or wonder...or anything in your head space.

The important thing is that Till's singing "du hast mich gefragt" which, as a whole, means "you asked me" in german, the "hast" in this case is used to express past tense.

Rammstein is mostly singing about social (occurrences!?) For example "Mein Teil" was released at the same year we have had the cannibal from Rothenburg. But Rammstein gives you no answers, they give you a mirrow. Btw. the old man translated right.

And Black Sabbath definitely invented doom metal. I don't know, Mike doesn't seem to know almost anything about metal. He should listen to "Under the Sun", "Into the Void", "Megalomania" or "Cornucopia" and then tell me that isn't doom metal. Candlemass (who named the genre with their debut album "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus") took everything directly from Black Sabbath. No "Vol. 4", no doom metal.

I first heard "Sonne" when I was 8 years old (so, in 2012) while walking in a park with my parents (my mother gave me her iPod because I got bored), and this is *the* song that introduced me to this band, and most importantly, Metal in general. Now, I am into Black Metal and Doom Metal, but sometimes, I "go back" and listen exclusively to Rammstein for a few days, as this is clearly the band that got me into well-produced music.

You know, as a german growing up in Germany, Rammstein's success is pretty funny to me...because back in the 90s "Engel" was such a huge mainstream success, that i was singing it, along with my mother, on the way to elementary school. Because of their mainstream appeal, their Nina Hagen influence (she was a punk/new wave artist from the early 80's who first used the heavy "r" and "ch" pronunciation in rock, punk and pop songs to provoke and to refer to old artist) and their PG lyrics (because yes, they look scary, but most of the lyrics really isn't and it's also not that deep) the underground scene (especially the underground scene from Berlin, where they originated from) totally hated Rammstein. Back than they were basically Germany's Gangnam-Style, because it was so over-played on the radio and every one and everyone's grandmother was running around doing the whistle part. Rammstein even referred to their genre as "dance-metal" at one point XD. So yeah, they got a bit "harder" after their success overseas, but now the underground still isn't really fond of them, for their theatrical performances and the entry fees, which blew up because of their excessive use of pyrotechnic and the fact that most people think they use standard german. However personally i quite like them and the guys of Rammstein are actually really nice, liberal dudes who never thought that their performances would be this successful. Fun fact: Their songs never got censored in the 90s, while a huge amount of Pop songs were. XD ...otze otze otze

rammstein is argued if it is metal or not. Thy themselves call it "neue deutsche Härte" and this style includes other german bands. It has some unique styles that are different from what you usually hear in metal but at the same time they utilise a lot of typicly metal styles so in my oppinion neue deutsche Härte is just a subgenre of metal

I am a huuuuuge rammstein fan and he is so wrong about they would be uninteresting if not for the shock value soooo wrong about that they have songs like ohne dich and seemann that are not shock values at all its deep emotional songs and a lot of their songs are deep and have a lot of meanings to them some of the acts like buck dich, pussy etc is shock value but there is waaay more than shock value too theres entertainment from the acts normal songs that people can relate to maybe like du hast the instruments are phenomenal I look up to Richard kruspe as an inspiration as a guitarist myself and till lindemann is such a deep poetic person he is such a great poet rammstein is life lol I love them this guy should really dig into them more
