Hey Eli! I was considering bay islands college of diving for my IDC and MSDT prep and was wondering how life on Utila during November would be like? Does it rain often and can I navigate the island without a car/bike? Are living costs expensive?

Hey Katelyn! So exciting you may be coming to the island! To answer your questions in order: 1.) November is the beginning of the rainy season so it will be raining a bit more, although the storms tend to be quick and only last about an hour! I've heard it's not much of an inconvenience for diving. 2.) You can navigate the island no problem solely by foot, I still don't even have a bike 3.) Living costs are definitely very low as compared to the U.S. Although there is access to higher-end rentals if that's what you're looking for.

P.A.D.I. Put another dollar IN. A lot of places don't hire Dive-master level, so I had to get at least my instructor's certification before I even attempted to try and work in the scuba diving industry. I did all my training back home in the extremely cold water of Canada, then I went to the Cayman islands to start my first job in the industry.

What is with crime in Utica? Is it safe to come?
@oceanscholar
@oceanscholar 3 жыл бұрын
Crime is very low in Utila, it is mainly a "backpacker" island run on tourism with a very small local population. People tend to be very welcoming and after three months here I have not personally had a problem nor have any of my friends!

What do you estimate $ from day zero to dive master cost?

Hi! What are your thoughts on becoming a DM purely to increase your skills and confidence? Would you say the experience is still worth while to be the best diver you can be?
@oceanscholar
@oceanscholar 3 жыл бұрын
I think that is a completely valid reason for getting a dive master. Many people I have met coming through the College of Diving in the last 6 months attain their DM simply for the experience of it and to become a better diver. Regardless of your intentions, you learn a lot about yourself and how you handle difficult task that come your way. I found that after my DM I really grew as a leader in general and felt extremely comfortable leading other people above and underwater.

I want to be a dive master so I can help promote the sport and not treat new divers like trash when they spend bucks on trips and take time off work to get to the dive site

Yes, if someone doesn’t have their own gear by the time you reach 20-30 dives, especially DM thats not good.
