My hometown had a reserve Drill Sergeant unit back in the 80’s. When I was in the reserves I was in a program called “Split Option”. I did my BCT (Boot Camp) at Fort Bliss, TX during my junior summer then the technical training after graduating from High School...Prior to that they had a mini weekend boot camp prep, we drove down to Fort Devens, MA recruiter dropped us off and a bunch of reserve Drill Sergeants took over, it was good training for them and us. One of the recruiters in my hometown office was a DS and he helped me a lot!

I went through Drill Sergeant School Class 6-83 at Fort Jackson SC. Back then we had to go through Drill Sergeant Orientation Course (DSOC) for 3 weeks being treated like privates. Once we completed DSOC we were allowed into the Drill Sergeant Course for the next 8 weeks. It was one of the most demanding schools I ever went to in my 28 years of Army Service. I performed my duties on Tank Hill in those days. It was the most rewarding duty I ever performed. I remember my Drill Instructors from Basic Combat Training at Fort Polk LA (SDS Oliver Magee, SSG Wesley Thomas, and SGT Brown). I remember my AIT Drill Sergeant (SSG, now MSG (R) Gerald Dukes who I still talk to this very day. He was proud I surpassed him and still remember me when I made 1SG/E8. While still on acive duty I ran into so many of my former Basic Trainees and was proud of how they had advanced. I loved being a D.I.

I had my drill packet in and finished. Had five fellow NCO’s that were all ex-drills as recommending and all E7 or above. Was time to goto drill school, was stationed at Coleman Barracks and received a notice from PERSCOM or TRADOC (cannot be sure of authorizing authority) stating policy change affected my packet. Only combat arms NCO’s were being selected. I was prior service (Navy) E6 to E5 and had to do Army basic... as an NCO...two bootcamps...argh! Seemed like every senior NCO in my unit there was prior Drill. They couldn’t believe it and they tried back channels, to no avail. Besides being injured at the Q course with a destroyed knee (fall from the rope climb on Nasty Nick at Mackall), this was the biggest disappointment in my career. Oh, getting out of the Navy was stupid and a disappointment as well...lol! Good ole Gramm-Rudman act...not giving them six years for free. When my fellow sailors were getting $30k the day before. What I get for joining on 1 October! Awesome for the troops that were able to go! Bravo Zulu!

@CR1SPBAC0N5 жыл бұрын
You say that now until they smoke your ass just because. DS are there to rip your habits away and make you into a man. Take the training seriously. 4 Golden tips you can use during Basic.... 1. Don’t kiss ass. DS hate soldiers that kiss ass and try to be brown noser, they will skull fuck you with push ups if you’re one of those. 2. Fly under the radar. Shine, but never shine too much. You want a DS to notice you and forget you were even there the moment he stops addressing you. 3. Don’t take anything personal, take everything with a grain of salt. DS will say all types of shit to you (there’s rules now so I don’t if they can even scream at you) but you have to maintain focus and not let words dictate your emotions. Simply reply “YES DRILL SERGEANT!” And keep it moving. And lastly, have fun! It’s going to suck but you’ll hear this sooner or later “EMBRACE THE SUCK” the training will be awesome and it’s going to be something that will stick with you for a lifetime. Enjoy your time there and sponge up as much as you can. 19D?? Oh boy, you’re in for a surprise lol. Be ready to be put on every detail, thats what the “D” stands for. I’ve been a scout for 5 years, trust what I’m saying dude. Now unless of course you get a duty station like Hawaii and go to jungle school, then that’s when it gets fun and you actually do your job.

Alpha Company 1/34, Fort Jackson, South Carolina. SFC Ruth Oden SSgt Andrew Benson SSgt Lachad Jefferson. Two years after BCT, I met SFC Oden at Camp Liberty, Iraq. I never thought I'd see any of my Drill Sergeants again. The military is really a small world...after all.
