My time in the Army was the BEST, I say again, the BEST time of my life!!! It was the first time in my young life I had freedom...home life was much stricter than Basic...I was used to getting up early although not at 0400...0600 was my wakeup time at home...I had no trouble with authority whatsoever...my only 'problem' was the physical side of Basic - running and those monkey bars you hadda do before chow, but I did it...like every other swingin' 'richard'...I loved being in Germany I got off base every chance I had...traveled as much as possible, (at the time, I despised beer) even got to the REAL Oktoberfest twice...in '72 & '73...spent A LOT of money at the 'Wall'...I hated coming home in July of '74...found I no longer had anything in common with my peers...tried for 9 years to reenlist but was FINALLY told in '83 that my eyesight..marginal when I enlisted in '71 and which almost kept me out was beyond acceptable limits. To this day Istill wish I had reenlisted...but I saw Armor as a dead end, so I left a d used the G I Bill to get my MA in Secondary Education..my purpose was twofold...reenlist and use the points for a. Advanced degree to advance in rank..if that didn't work out at least I had a degree that would get me a teaching job...for all the good two degrees did me i life I shouldda learned a trade...

Another spec4 and I both recognized him, the first morning we saw him before morning formation. Best advice I can give you is to just buy in right at the start. Don't hold back, don't try to assert your individuality, don't think you're too cool or too smart to be there. Jump when you're told to jump, hit the deck quick when you're told to drop. Everyone is going to be all-in before long anyway, so make it easy on yourself and just commit to the program from day one. When you're in your last week, try to make the time to look around and keep some memories.

Oh, made me nostalgic for the good old days. :( I went through Ft Jackson summer of 1990. Drill Sgts Brown, Boyd and Ferrell. Drill Sgt Boyd was the meanest SOB! He caught me sleeping on my caught one day when we were cleaning our bays. No one woke me up. BASTARDS! :) Next thing I know the bunk was lifted up in the air and the only thing as I was able to see before I rolled of the bed was the top of his Smokey Bear hat. Good times! :) lol!!

I've deployed to Iraq from Ft. Drum, Germany and Ft. Wainwright. The Army loved sending me to cold places and deploying me to very hot ones.

I wasn’t in the building. But I left my wall locker open while at Ft.Knox. My TA50 was outside, the third floor(I lived on the second), and in the DS office. I lost 6 pounds that day.

HOO-AHH!! Fort McMuffin! I saw some pictures of the place after it closed....breaks my heart. Those barracks were brand-new when I went through in 1984. We had to Brasso the garbage can and sweep the PT pad and that place sparkled from our effort. To see it dilapidated and overgrown made my heart ache.

As you move on in life depending on where you are at in life the military was either a adjustment part of her life or brutal (in a good way) part of life. Basic training I thought would be the worse thing I would ever experience in life. That was until I got back as a civilian and experienced personal failures and struggles.
