I am an experienced DP here in New York City. My career has bounced all over the place, with fabulous ups and depressing downs, some amazing shoots all around the United States and worldwide. I can personally attest to what you have said about relationships and being able to work with people. That is the bottom line. Can people work with you and do they want to be with you. Or have breakfast, lunch and dinner with you on out-of-town shoots, etc. Can they really talk to you about work and even personal stuff, if that comes up. This is a person to person business. End of story.

Your attitude is amazing. I look forward to hiring people with this attitude on my sets, please keep it up. We should be humble at any age, any stage. I've hired many DP's and most have been great - but there are a couple that I remember very well. One of them was simply unkind, just the simplest way to put it. I remember that and it was the last time I hired him. In fact, he's reached out a couple of times saying "I miss working together" - but I simply remember how unkind he was on set. Then there's another DP that I just hired for the first time. He was kind, offered help above & beyond, was calm, reassuring, and like you said...waited until the very end with me. In the end, it was the Director (me) and the DP that waved everyone goodbye. Yes, he's talented - but I really remember his kindness and how professional he was. I appreciate that. I'll hire him again and I will refer his services. Keep up the great job, I look forward to seeing your growth.

Bro, this pumped me up so much! I am a combat filmmaker in the army, and we have this saying: Leaders Eat Last. I try to treat every job with this mindset. It’s not about me getting all the cool shots or being the hero. It’s all about the relationships, and being a kind, caring and genuine person first before everything. I will continue to grow in my leadership and skill set and someday, I’ll be a legit cinematographer, but more importantly, a kind person.❤

Very well made video. You are teaching me so much as an inspiring DP trying to get in to the FSU film school. When ever I watch a video they never mention the connections or mindset which is the most important part of film making. Everyday I do something related to filming learning, experience or meeting new people. After a couple months of choosing this route in life I have been able to get an internship, be an 2nd AC on a feature film, a PA for so many films and making connections with people already in the industry. My favorite person I have met so far was a man that was in a camera store with me and came up to ask if I shoot film. I said no I’m a cine specialist and he gave me stories he had while doing cine work with Spielberg and George Lucas. Now he works at a film school and in that 20 minute talk he taught me so much. I just love the film community and can’t wait to be a part of the industry.

I am a biginner in the filming world and once I bought my first Cinema Camera "the C200" which was second hand, I asked the owner to give me tips how to be in the film industry in Amsterdam. He gave me alot and he told me anout his career journy. It is so similar to yours. He fixed the rejectofobia that was inside me.

you hit the spot when you said, to build a healthy relationship with the people you work with. Also when you said "I'd rather work with someone who's decent at their job but is kind and hardworking, rather than someone who is the best at their job but you don't wanna be around" so true. Also the fear of rejection is a common reason why most people miss out on oppurtunities. Like you said, the worse thing that can happen is they say no and your life is still the same.

As an African American I can agree with Carlo. People like me are not given opportunities in this industry. Especially when you’re in a small city. Of course I can move, but I’m in a city where filming is huge, and movies are being made here constantly. They just not giving black folks opportunities in the film industry. It sucks, but I’m never going to give up.

Damn that hits so hard. Thats all so true and I see myself struggling a lot right now with that. I'm studying film in Germany and somehow I have the feeling that I'm just not so popular among my mates. I would love to be one of the people that get hit up for a shooting. But nobody asks me and i always think that just a few people really likes me. If I'm not smiling I look pretty serious and not friendly, I know that and I work on it to smile more. But sometimes it just doesn't feel right, like not me and I think because of the "fake me" it just makes things worse. A lot of my friend told me that they needed a bit time with me to see me as friendly and almost everyone told me they had the feeling at first i wouldn't like them. I hate it so much...☹️cause I would love to make friend fast. I love it to meet new people but somehow it just doenst work out for me that easy.

@markjob63542 жыл бұрын
You're a pretty passionate guy, and that's alright. 👍 If someone doesn't have any passion for what they're doing, then one has to question why they bother doing it ? You are so right about "relationships," and the ability to be "humble," and a "kind" person. 👍 Brilliantly said. Biblical Advice ! 👍😃 Build your team. Make your family. Always work with the same people you like and are good if you can. I know a few brilliant, talented DOP's, but they're arrogant asses, and they're so egocentric they don't always play well with others, and are difficult to be around. I am always amazed how so many with attitude can continue to work ?
