Buddy, I’m seriously so fucking grateful for this video and to have found your channel in general. There is a serious lack of mentorship in this field and to have someone that has gone through the steps and is able and willing to share this information is truly invaluable thank you thank you thank you.

Love working with G&E who have way more experience and knowledge than me. Can definitely seem a little intimidating, but I feel like once you realize it's not your job to tell them HOW to do their job, it's so freeing to be able to just "dream" and "imagine" how you want the image to look and then convey that to the crew. Love when they turn that vision into a reality. Plus then you get to learn a lot from them as well.

Thank you! This is probably the most important lesson for me right now because of the psichological side of the problem I have for years as a good photographer, but who does not do projects anymore for 3 years, because I used to think that my photos are not good enough to charge monoye for it. When all my friends who see the pictures I did in years of doing that job, are telling me to go and shoot cause what I do is fantastic. But I don't believe it. Somehow in the years I lost my motivation for the most important job or hobby of my life - photography.

Thank you for sharing this. I went threw the same things as an AC and now as a growing DP. It can be very stressful working in new environments and/or with new people, especially during preproduction, when many interrogations are on the table (gear, crew, organization, etc). During the first call/mail, I always think about how the project would fit into the career I pursue AND if I have the skills to do it. I often struggle with this second one, relating to the imposter syndrome. It's like being scare of the unknown, not being able to look to the future, even if I know I should go ahead. Most of the time, I handle those new experiences well and it helps me grow in the right way, but this feeling still comes back when a new shooting scenario hits my brain. As you know, every shoot is different, so I guess I will overcome this as I do more jobs threw the years, moving forward.

this was amazing to watch! love the transparency and vulnerability! know that you’re definitely not alone, DP work, production work, crew work, however you look at it, it’s just like any other job in that there is a certain workplace dynamo and a lot of that falls on the Director and DP. it’s awesome to see you evolving and leaning into those leadership qualities and i think it’s HUGE that you can even recognize that necessity to be vulnerable with your team. keep going man this was great!

Had my first major project as a DP at Abbey Road Studio, every single point you made I can relate to. Especially felt sereal having so many people looking to me for what I wanted. Pre-Production was full of anxeity of if I could even do the job and almost got to handing the project to someone more experienced. I'm so glad I pushed through all the self doubt. I learned so much. Pushing out of comfort zone pushes you in such a positive way.

Lmao this reminds me of the first time I tried to gaff a project. At the time I had no experience (and I mean 0 experience) with HMI's. But some how bullshitted my way into the role. The set had road closures, a professional vehicle stunt team from roadshow studios with decades of experience, and about 150 extras. As I was half learning how to safely use HMI's I had to provide the stunt coordinator with insight on my lighting plan. I had everything worked out in preproduction but being on that set was so chaotic I definitely hurt the production's time schedule.

Hey Gian! I came across your channel 2 weeks ago, the first video I saw was a day in life of a commercial cinematographer part 1 and I instantly connected to you. I follow a lot of filmmaking related channels but your content just stands out for me, looking at you inspires me everytime I watch your videos, looking at you makes me believe that I can make it as well. I don't comment a lot on videos, but, watching this video made me want to appreciate you and your content. Thank you for reading this far and thank you for inspiring me. Keep up the good work! 🙌🏻❤️

Take the netflix contract if you're ever offeren and live your dream bro. It's just like you said in the beginning, if a producer or director reeaches out then it's because they see something in you or your work. They will set you up with the crew, director, and producers you need to be successful. After all, it's a shared risk for them to make a return. You got it bro!

Yo this was all so well spoken! This mentality is vital to so many aspects of life. I would also say probably a huge factor in getting repeat work. When people can sense the genuineness of your character and demeanor they just want to surround themselves with more people like that! All the best bro and hope to work together again soon!

Really great video, man. Thanks a lot! Just been through the same thing recently. Got presented with an opportunity to shoot a short film with a big grew and some difficult locations. I was very scary and uconfident about it. Even wanted to turn down the offer but eventually decided that I have to push myself cause one time I'll have to take the risk anyway. So, I stepped forward and it turned so good and not as hard as imagined at all. Just like you said I was relaying on my team to do their job and they did well. Fear is killer of art and it's our most important mission to fight him back😌

I am in my final stretch of college for a BS-Digital Cinematography. It has been so challenging to find someone to even get my production hours. So many we will call you back, or wait until you graduate. It got me down a little. But I’m not giving up! I’m praying that doors open for me! I love the authenticity of this video❤ I work full time, in college full time, and also trying to build a business. I think that may be the issue with me finding someone to work with as well. But no one wants to hire a student. And I have two children to provide for. It would be hard to go long without pay.
