I'm that multi-career, 1000 hobby guy. I decided to do enough training to solo, and check the bucket list box. So much for that... CFI checkride soon... So keep at it. This became the 'retirement job' for me, meaning that I won't stop until I'm too old to do it. Keep at it! And... Recreational pilot effectively doesn't exist. Great content!

Great video! I agree with other comments that the medical should be done ASAP, just in case. As a CFI, I would recommend your video to anyone interested in starting their journey!

Good video.I found it easy to get my private pilot certificate because at the same time I was learning how to fly radio control model airplanes and also during high school hours I was training to get my mechanic A&P ratings.Plus I have an intense love of the airplane.I eat, sleep and drink airplanes. And it was much cheaper to get my certificates in the early 1980s.My flight instructor was a school teacher who worked out of his Toyota Camry and had a Cessna 152 based at the local airport where I lived and worked

For the older (40+) guys, the medical part can really be a pain in the butt. Basic Med might be the way to go because the FAA just loves to flag anything and everything. Take a statin? Need an exception. Use a CPAP machine? Another pile of hassles. Taking any other meds and such, even more headaches. It's just really archaic to get an atta boy for being healthy from you doctor and the FAA doing anything and everything to make it harder to get a medical certificate.

Great video. I’m just starting my adventure into being a pilot with an intro flight this weekend. I live in a pretty remote place in Northern California so I only have 2 options for flight training so I hope that I one suits my needs. I’m going to intro this weekend into ultralight flight but plan on a pilots certificate shortly after. Really just trying to get in the air as soon as possible I’m 40 years old and am starting way later then I have hoped for. I have talked to a instructor that does not teach ultralight and although he didn’t say so it sounded like in his opinion there is no benefit from flying ultralight other then as a hobby of flying that type of aircraft. I was thinking that it could help me to advance my experience a little more before diving into higher certification. What do you think about this situation? Also would you skip sport pilot cert all together or do you think it’s a viable option. This is going to be completely recreation for me at this point in my life. The overall plan in the beginning was to start with ultralight followed by sport and get a light sport plane then follow up with private and upgrade to a little bigger aircraft. Any insight would be appreciated.

I'd say it depends on your overall goals in the long run. Do you see yourself wanting to advance? Considering the differing hour requirements between sport pilot and private pilot certificates, obtaining a private pilot certificate offers more comprehensive training and skills development. This provides a stronger foundation for future advancement, such as pursuing a commercial pilot license. While starting with a sport pilot certificate is feasible, transitioning to a private pilot certificate may offer broader opportunities and capabilities in the long run. Glad you enjoyed the video! There's a link to a PDF above called the Private Pilot Roadmap, which condenses the info in the video into a printable document for ease of use.

@@ClearedForLanding thanks for the response. My end goal would be Private Pilot knowing there will be no issue with a medical exam. I know eventually my Wife and Daughter will want to fly with me but it will be after i have many hours solo so should i fly a sport certificate until the time comes when they are both wanting to fly. What it comes down to is time and money would I be wasting more time and money getting the sport then private or is one not going to affect the other?

@@jesse0376 very hard to say. The way I understand it is that technically you can do the additional requirements when youre ready to move up to Private Pilot from Sport, but if there are things you are no longer proficient im you may need some extra hours to refresh. Plus you'll be paying for 2 check rides. Ultimately it's up to you and how you wanna space it out both financially and training wise! Id suggest talking to some people in some Facebook groups who have their sport pilot on some pros and cons of having Sport. I've found Facebook groups to be a great resource during this whole thing.

What about a Sport Pilot license?

I would just invest in the private at least. Sport is very limiting and you can't fly at night.

Other than the truth of pursuing my life long goal to become a pilot. I tongue in cheek ask myself this all the time. "I'm about to retire from my first career of 25 years. And then I will pursue my original life goal of becoming a pilot. After I retire from my first career and then become a pilot with a PPL on my way to become a commercial pilot. What's my title? Am I considered a retired Pilot? Or a Pilot who is retired? How do I explain myself? 😉 This is the hardest topic I have contemplated before I chase that dream of becoming a full ATP. Thanks for the help. Keep them wings up!

i’d save my money and go into robotics, because AI will be flying aircraft soon, and it’s stupid expensive, and no job guarantees.

This point of view isn’t truly accurate. I wouldn’t let my life fully to a robot with 100% control of an aircraft without nobody knowledgeable in flying being around. And if that happens it won’t be in our lifetimes since newer aircraft are still using old technology and it isn’t as fast paced as the automotive industry

Robotics, would be worst because robots while be repairing robots. People will not fly with no AI controlling the full plan. Please do some research.
