Should look into MESA airlines, I think it’s called Pilot readiness or something… for zero or little experience and they are so cheap and very well known amongst large carriers and get you up to 1500 and you start out of training making 101000, you just owe them a few years to pay back the cost of training and the hours… it’s I think $60 per flight hour and they will take out 945 a month from your check to start paying for it you can pay it all at once or increase how much your paying… the friend who told me about it said he knows guys who left MESA for bigger carriers making almost triple

Find the right instructor. Mine took it as a personal challenge to prove wrong an instructor he hated at another airport that he knew was milking the process. He committed to making every hour count. When I went for my FAA check ride I had 39.5 hours, the check ride counted as the 40th hour. This was in 1994 and I paid a grand total back then of $2,650 to get my license, which I guess would be about $7,500 now in 2024.

This video explains how I studied for every oral exam. For the written exams, I relied solely on Sheppard Air….except for the PPL where I recommend this flywithtrent.groundschool.com/ As for jobs other than CFI, there are many many options. Most lay very poorly and give you fewer hours than you can get as a CFI.

This video alone is already more than what I learned in my freshman year in Aviation Sciences at Northeast Louisiana University way back in 1978. A 50,000 dollar degree plan back then quickly became futile. The actual cost was much higher for reasons you just mentioned. I got “the bug” again in the Air Force as an Avionics Instruments specialist. On one occasion I was up in a KC-135 troubleshooting an autopilot bug that was happening in flight. It was a training mission for several new officers to practice maneuvers for refueling but also practice stalls. I got to listen to the instructor guide the students through it all . Hearing the wing buffeting and dropping like a rock and a surprising 3.75 g’s during recovery for 11 hours sticks with me even today. I loved it! I’m fortunate that I have access to your experience. Aviate, Communicate, Navigate is obviously your calling.

The best PPL advice on the internet. Only wish I had this video when I was working on my PPL 30 years ago. I fell into more than a few of the traps he outlines. My first mistake was that I didn't run away when my PPL instructor boasted about the coke he did with his girlfriend over the weekend. Went downhill from there, but I did eventually get my PPL with some complements from the DPE.

@@trent_dyrsmid Hey do you think you could give me some advice? I’m trying to figure out if it would more economical to buy a cheaper airplane to log hours. But I’m not sure if that money would be better spent towards more ratings. Thanks in advance.
@trent_dyrsmid Жыл бұрын
I know that a lot of people are big fans of buying airplanes to build time cheaply, and I cannot argue with the math. However, the airlines really love to hire Cfi‘s because they know that we really know our stuff. If you just flew around in a 152 VFR the entire time, you really haven’t learned much of anything.
@motogirlz101 Жыл бұрын
@@trent_dyrsmid I have to disagree here. I bought my 150 from a guy who owned it for 5 yrs to build time in...he was a CFI though and then he sold it to me when he was ready for the airlines. He is now an airline pilot. And I love the fact that I can fly my plane whenever I want and stay proficient and not have to rent anyone's plane. I would also say it depends on your finances. If you have the money to buy it, go for it. C150's have excellent resale value.

Another thing you forgot to mention in THIS video is that you STUDIED BEFORE starting your 91 day accelerated training program. In fact, I believe you took ALL of the KNOWLEDGE TESTS, ie Private, Instrument, Commercial and even CFI (?) Knowledge Test were completed BEFORE you started the 91 day course. This makes a HUGE difference in being able to accelerate your training and having flight lessons closer together rather than spread apart. For those students who want to fly 3 or more than twice a week, I would recommend getting your PRIVATE PILOT KNOWLEDGE TEST taken ~ done BEFORE starting your flight training.

You can in fact be a commercial pilot even with a category 3 medical. You can flight instruct on 3rd class. And you can fly cargo on 2nd class. You need 1st class only to exercise APT privileges. If you can "only" get 2nd class, I'd still consider. And I'm in 1st class, by the way but I don't necessarily think of flying for airlines.

why in single engine aircraft don't use V1 speeds. You call V1 before specific point or Abort. Decision Point = DP DP is a point on runway that allows accelerate to V1 and safety stops with propeller at lowest drag setting/idle trust, and if V1 is higher than Vr-5kts than V1 = Vr-5kts, and DP is recalculated for new V1 (Vr-5kts) and DP can be closer if checking object on/near runway is before previous calculated DP. (changing DP require to recalculate V1) V1 / DP are calculated with 95% expected takeoff thrust/power. That will be last check of: 1: engine have expected power. 2: weight is calculated properly. 3: density altitude is calculated properly. 4: there is no extra/unexpected drag.

I have a degree in Geography and have always loved seeing the earth from the sky... google maps/earth... aerial photographs of the terrain below... it's always been a fascinating view for me. I've played Microsoft Flight Simulator a bit (actually built a PC specifically to be a gaming computer capable of playing it) but I haven't taken a discovery flight yet. I'm not financially gifted and taking time off to spend money is a difficult option for me, so I've just been imagining becoming a pilot for years. I'm almost 47 now and time is not going to be gifted back to me in the future, so I am getting more and more antsy about doing it. I just don't have the financial ability to do so. Still, love watching videos on flight and found this one and enjoyed it, so I thought I'd drop a comment. Thanks for the great insight. Maybe someday I'll be able to join you up in the clouds.

Really enjoyed your video and love the fact that you spoke about consistency regarding staying in the cockpit often. I’m hoping to get back into flying after 30 years away so needless to say I’m no youngster but still have the passion. Good luck with your videos and teaching and keep up the great work.

My CFI was working on getting me to solo for my PPL, but he ran off to classes for his airline job or something 😅 my girlfriend is working on her commercial at the same time so we're splitting use of her Cessna150. She found a couple more CFIs that could fill the gap for both of us, and i hope we mesh well. I've only got around 14 hours flying time (including around 3-4 hours of flying time from 2023 that's basically rusted time), but my instructor had previously said that he thought I for sure had around 40 hours of experience in what little time I've already flown.

Pay attention folks to don't do this once a week...you will definitely have instructors who will do this!!! And it's bad advice. Definitely understand the language Study! My favorite is Kings and I watch Scott Leach with Sky Eagle. I went 8 months and 3 instructors and a lot of money once a WK or every other. I became scared of the plane. I will go back but this time I am studying my ground school material. I will buy a avionics sim. And then I will invest In a pt.61 school. ❤ Love this video

Thanks for sharing this video Trent! "Randomly flying around today" is not uncommon in many flight schools. I suspect the reason is some of these CFI are trying to build hours so they can transition to the airlines... I was doing "chandelle maneuver," "Dutch rolls" and "ILS landing" during my training .. I had about 270 hours under my belt before I took my Private Pilot Checkride. (of course I nailed it)

Verify that the instructor you choose will hold you to a syllabus. He should brief you on expectations and what to study days before the flight, then check off adequate and inadequate performance during the flight, then debrief after the flight. This will cut your training time in half.

Part 141 takes less time than part 61. Since its an approved curriculum thats also inspected by the FAA and the instructors are also approved by the FAA. Therefore those programs allow pilots to have lower minimums to achieve ratings. They also let you get financial aid or a GI bill to pay for training neither is an option with Part 61. The downside of the part 141 is that if you cannot keep up with the rigor then they will take just as much time as a part 61 and the school might bump you from that program.

Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦 I have recently begun my aviation journey starting with the manual (From The Ground Up) I plan to take the approach of acquiring a sufficient budget first and timing my entry into ground school with the nicer months given Canada’s short window of decent weather 😅 Anyways I just wanted to give my thanks as a lot of your video resonated with me and was formatted in a way that that cleared up a lot of the concerns I have as a complete beginner in the field.🙏

These videos have good content in them, quite unlike some others that get hyped on KZbin. A lot of the advice given here is pretty standard (fly as often as you can, more is better, use schools that do their own aircraft maintenance, try to fly in a part of the country that has consistently good flying weather, or try to maximize the number of sessions during the times of the year when the weather is better if you cant move, and finally make sure you have a good instructor) What is not said here is that when you schedule a Discovery Flight, most schools will pair you with the newest instructor that they have, in an effort to build that instructor's client base. That might be a good thing, that might be a bad thing, only you will know if you get along with that person or not. So, his advice to do multiple Discovery flights to try different instructors is quite good. I found it curious that Trent's advice is to avoid Part 141 instruction, as a lot of schools will hype Part 141 training as the cost saving option. This video did not really address the differences between the Part 61 training and the Part 141 training and that is an important distinction, IMO. Perhaps there is other content elsewhere in this feed that discusses this, I will have to look and see. If you stay with Part 61 training, then your selection of an instructor becomes even more critical, as you will want to fly with an instructor that tries to keep you progressing through a curriculum. Otherwise, the "just flying around while the instructor builds flight time" problem can happen. Most schools (at least in my part of the world) are not going to discuss their ratio of students to airplanes. They may not have that information, or if they do, they don't intend to share it with you. This is because in most cases their business model is based on maximizing the amount of time the planes are operating and due to cancellations, this requires the planes to be fully booked or overbooked. What I have seen people do is make some sort of attempt to verbally assure the student that they will have adequate access to planes and instructors and tell the potential student that the instructor will handle scheduling. This makes the scheduling problem look like its in the instructor's control, when it isn't fully. Planes go down for maintenance regularly and the instructor has no control over that. If you ask a school about DPE availability, they will likely tell you that they have access to them. Often, the school has a DPE on their staff, or is maintaining a close relationship with one. In my part of the world, the instructor handles the DPE selection and scheduling of the check rides. There are a lot of good reasons for this. I can assure you that the DPEs don't have time to talk to dozens of people every day about potentially scheduling check rides. They are busy trying to get check rides completed and they are relying on the local instructor to schedule when the student is prepared AND endorsed. One of the DPEs in my area will NOT allow anyone on his schedule until the instructor has given the required endorsements, in order to avoid late cancellations and a scheduling gap. Just like the instructors, the DPEs are trying efficiently use their time. So again, this is another situation where instructor choice is critical. You want to work with an instructor that will manage the process to check ride completion appropriately and have you scheduled so that you don't wait. I am glad that Trent put some emphasis on the FAA ACS documents. I have been surprised some in the past couple of years to discover students that have flown with other instructors don't know about it at all. In my view, the ACS is the bare minimum training standard. Hopefully, students will get some exposure to information beyond the absolute minimum, but I certainly understand that it is currently fashionable to promote "minimum" training as quality.

Trent, do you have one ground school you would personally recommend? I've narrowed it down to King's, Sporty's and Gold Seal. Leaning toward's dropping King's from the list as I've heard it has a lot of out dated videos etc. Hearing great things about Gold Seal, while a little more expensive, I'm not really seeing any negative reviews at all.
