I grew up on the 870, bought a benelli supernova for a duck gun a few years back, and got issued a 14 inch mossberg 590 for work. I wanted to hate the mossberg but I can't deny that it has the best ergonomics of the 3 types of pump shotguns I've used

I few points of contention: While 3inch shells do reduce capacity, they do not inherently pattern worse (or even recoil worse). Why they can appear to pattern worse is folks often go from a 2 3/4” load with a wad with petals (rem express for instance) to a conventional type load (gas seal and cushion wad only) in 3”. This means the pellets actually contact the barrel during firing and deform. These loads benefit greatly from chokes. All of the serious shotgun reloaders typically gravitate towards the 3” 12 gauge as the optimum balance of case capacity and recoil. Bubba Rountree outdoors has numerous patterning videos if you want to see this. The greatest advantage of using a longer shell is the ability to have comparable payloads to a “magnum” 2 3/4” shell (I.e. 12 pellet 00 buck) while using a full length wad. Shot size: 00 buck is ok, it works and stacks in 3s in a conventional 12 gauge load. 1b stacks in 4s, still penetrates well, and has more total surface area than 00b which makes it a better all around fighting size (you get 12 pellets of 1b for 9 00b). 1b also stacks in 3s inside a wad, so you can get better patterns and more surface area than 00b in the same payload weight (my personal mass production load is 14p 1b in a 2 3/4” load with a full length wad). 4b is too light beyond ranges where the shot column is only a couple inches wide. It will fail to penetrate to the vitals on poor angles or through extended limbs. 4b is great inside the home, trash beyond 20m. At HD ranges, full power slugs penetrate less than 00 buck. They overexpand and break apart. There are numerous gel tests and several good X-rays of cadavers that show this. In many ways, they are the more responsible option over 00 buck. Lastly about chokes: interchangeable chokes allow you to tune your pattern. They do not necessarily make your pattern tighter. If you get a good deal on a bulk of shotgun shells, but the pattern is too tight or too large for your liking, changing the choke can allow you to still make use of those shells.

We use slugs for deer in Ohio. True story hunting deer in a shallow ravine, one guy down the middle shooting Hornady SST slugs driving deer from the opposite direction two guys on the top sides coming from the opposite direction. Shooter in the middle BANG, "GET DOWN" CRACK as the SST slug takes off the top of the deer's head. Next thing I heard is this eerie whirl sound as the SST slug turns almost 90% and zips right past me. Not an experience I ever want to repeat. Valuable lesson learned.

I had to revisit this video Trench. We're trying to set up a 100 yd clay range to simulate drones. I had to go with old-timey two-point sling because of the long barrel. And it sucks. I went with a turkey barrel because it's still kind of balanced. But if I really had to knock shit out of the sky, I probably would use a 32" Xfull and 3" #1 or #4 buck instead we're trying to use 3" goose loads. Totally understandable why Ukraine would use a bullpup. Pump would be more reliable though. It's really important for people to understand how chokes work and how they work better with 3" magnum cartilages. They don't just constrict the shot pattern. The appearance of a tighter pattern is only half the story. It's also longer. With the lead elements moving faster than the rear. Like water out of a garden hose. The whole purpose of the choke is to draw out and lengthen the shot pattern. For leading an aerial Target, so it's flying into a dispersed area effect.

Sir Mr. Trench great video. I have been following you for a while. I train very often and I am working on a discussion/presentation for shotgun gear in conjunction with loading and carrying. This hands down I feel has been the best presentation you have given for shotguns and I hope more people come to this video to learn from you. I am only in opposition of 2 things in this video 1) never use a red dot 2) don’t use chokes. Keep in mind these are soft opposition. I agree that a bead sight literally has no failure point at all and never runs out of battery so this is literally combat proof but I do feel red dots offer an advantage over the bead sight but you do introduce failure points. With the chokes on the shotgun lately I have been getting convinced the other way. There are way more offerings now in chokes that are made specifically for for buckshot and do well and the biggest downside to a wider spread (in the event it is not inside a house or dwelling) is that each pellet is a liability ball and flyers carry consequences. Big ones. 9 hits spread out will cause an immediate response from the intended target but hitting or damaging something that is an unintended target may end you in the legal system.

Nice 870. I got mine just prior to the bankruptcy when their QC was questionable. I didn't know that at the time and got it on pure name recognition. I had occasional failure to extract issues. It'd stovepipe from time to time. I fixed that issue by replacing the cheap MIM extractor with a machined replacement from Volquartsen. I also swapped the plastic follower with a high viz aluminum replacement. Failure to extract issues fixed. I also went with the Magpul furniture, barrel clamp and sling. Great products from them. I love the ergonomics of their shotgun stock in particular. Great hybrid of a pistol grip and traditional stock IMO. The finish is notorious for allowing rust so I had that redone with Cerakote. Now that Remington is back (under the name RemArms) I do hope the QC issues have been resolved. Remington is an American icon and I'd hate to see it go away permanently. As for the Mossberg vs Remington debate that sometimes comes up, I like both so I own both. I also got a 18.5" Mossberg 590A1. Got it setup pretty much the same as my 970 with the Magpul products plus a Surefire mini scout light (500 Lumens) as it's my go to. I'm blind in my right eye so I have to shoot left handed and the controls on the Mossberg are much more ambi/lefty friendly. In regards to gimmick shells, I got some of those Winchester Defender "defense" loads that is a slug with three 00Buck. Yeah, I'd say they're a gimmick too but when checking the pattern, they spread pretty nice in my 590A1. At 10 or so yards, the slug hit center mass with the three 00Buck hitting all around it. But still, I think you're better off with either 00Buck or #4Buck. I too have watched lots of Paul Harrel vids and have learned a lot from him. Sadly, he has cancer and his brother is taking over the channel. It'll be a truly sad day when we lose him. I and likely millions of other gun owners who go to "gun tube" for pointers and advice have learned so much from him.

the way to get around the ammo problem is to reload shells. makes it really cheap. cast your own projectiles too. probably shouldn't say this but last time i restocked my supply it also helps get around California's ammo laws. equipment is cheap too all you need is a roll crimper and power drill.
@klawockkidd3426

Exactly. I use a MEC reloader but shotshells are by far the easiest rounds to improvise in the event of ammo shortages and one of the beautiful things about the 870 is that it's forgiving of the quality of questionable shells.

I got a seven shot 590a1 marinecote and got a +1 extension from S and J hardware in Canada, his spring, and follower kit. It's actually pretty slick. Pretty good finish on it, but for some reason I've always been a quarter inch short of actually fitting 7 2 3/4" shells in the tube. So regardless, if I've got 2 and 3/4 or 3 inch magnums, I can only fit 6 + 1 either way, so the capacity arguments Moot for me. Federal makes a 3 inch magnum, 12 pellet 00 that's got the flight control wad, the buffering, and the plated pellets- it's relatively low velocity so no deformation. I sent the gun off to magnaport last year to get its forcing cone lengthened and some porting done and when used in conjunction with push pull holy shit that thing shoots flat and soft. I think that's got some real promise. I think we picked the shotgun because it's so damn devastating. If I can get away with three extra pellets, some more ass behind 00, why not?

I'm that shotgun guy, and I have been for many years. Always my first choice. I handload 12 and 16 Gauge Buckshot ammunition. I carry cut down 12 and 16 Gauge doubles as street guns that I load the ammunition for! Because Ricardo Tubbs. 😛 And it's fun. Definitely nobody expects to see you come up with one of those. Though they are heavy... Excellent general shotgun video. Almost everyone completely ignores training with this weapon, except for the occasional weirdo like me who's devoted to it. It has it's limitations. Heavy recoil, heavy bulky fragile ammunition, low capacity, short effective range, especially with barrels under 9", and slow reloading. But exceptionally devastating within range, and highly versatile. Though more for utility hunting than fighting. But you can make it do most of what you would generally need a gun for. 🦃

Awesome video. I disagree with only one thing, for buckshot if you can use a choke, I definitely would. Like you said, you're responsible for every pellet. Keep em together for as long as possible. Hunting wise, deer drop faster the more energy you can hit em with. A 6 of inch spread of 00 buck is end game

Brand/load of ammo also really influences pattern. From the same gun and barrel, at the same distance, you can get vastly different pattern sizes with different brands of ammo, even if they're all 9-pellet, 00 Buck. I suggest going to the range with at least 2-3 brands of buckshot when you pattern. The shotgun I've used the most is the 870, most of that in 3-Gun competition. I eventually got a Stoeger M3000 which was a turd of a gun, and now I have a Benelli M2. My local 3-Gun clubs now have a 2-Gun division (pistol & rifle only) and that's my preferred division, so I rarely shoot shotguns anymore.

I’m left handed and my two point sling gets in the way pretty badly. I will get a single point asap. Great video very informative. Rifles are awesome but for up close the shotgun is supreme. Either the 870 or the mossberg 590A1 (I have the 20 inch bead sight) are the best bang for your buck deals in the firearms world. The benelli is high as giraffe balls but worth every penny.

Hey guys, i just wanted to say it is a whole lot easier when unloading your mag tube, you first bring the gun to half-rack and THEN seat the last round in the tube. If you then finish your rack, that round doesnt get fed and the round (if there is one) in the chamber gets ejected. Once you do this, leave it racked back, ejection port wide open. Now your lifter can be moved out of the way for you to unload your shells.

For all the lazy trainers out there, with a full set of snap caps, there's no excuse not to practice dry fire and reloading. Gets you used to cycling the gun, the weight of the gun, and obviously effective reloading without NDing the neighbors cat.

@@KingNothing86 for walking around outside then yeah 2 point is better. Inside a house is where a single point shines. I would argue if someone is gonna run a very small pcc a single point sling is also ok to use. But I wouldn’t recommend a pcc so I guess I agree with your statement that single points are only good for shotguns

🥩 This was a handy video. I have almost that exact setup (870 with magpul furniture) but side saddle is a hard/fixed saddle. Not sure if you had this issue (training issue on my end?) but i had a TRL1 light on my foregrip on left side and once in a while, the kick on the gun would tear my hand up from the rail and light hitting my hand. I ended up mounting the light just forward of the hand guard on a rail (one of the barrel clamps with rail). Question about velcro side saddle: does the velcro on that one start to come off the shotgun after a while? I had one a while back, and maybe it was shitty, but it was starting to peel off so I switched to a hard saddle. Did you mount diffferently or any tricks? Thanks

how tall are you and how does that affect a 1 point sling? is there a tighter sling if I'm 5'9 with a 20in barrel? the stock buttstock is long, gotta buy a long screwdriver now...

Did you say that you usually run a light on the shotgun? But not on your rifle? Is the shotgun daylight only? Optimal shotgun barrel length?

I have a question for the commenters Does anyone mix their loads in the shotgun for tactical reasons? I was taught to use a slug first and then straight buckshot after that. Does anyone else do it?

Shotguns are a lot like snub nose revolvers. They’re expert guns that require a lot of training to run correctly. And they only fill a very small role in my defensive plan. 99% of the time, I’m grabbing my suppressed 11.5” in any sort of HD situation.
