On this raw day in our life from the coast of Cateel, Davao Oriental... We go checkup on Mama Rose and her new building project. After enjoying a meal together, I then get introduced to a strange new fruit... Pandan!? There is never a dull moment living here at our beach home in the Philippines!

yes. those old stairs were trip and fall hazard because of the badly built stringers. the wood can still be used for other wood projects other than firewood. 😊😊

Bukbok or wood termites. The bamboo was harvested young. Ang untreated! My cousin’s house is made of bamboos for more than 60 years (6 decades) now. Until now it has no “Bukbok”!

@@blueaquarius9196 it is a long process. The short of it is harvest at a right age. Experts call it 4-4-4 (4 years, 4 months and 4 days). And when you cut, let it stand slanted on a stone to let release its sap(sweet) for a day. This way it will not be attacked by bukbok or wood termites. Old folks let it soak on sea water for weeks.

Good that the stairs was changed. One advise, the old stairs, you can make it as other leisure chairs for your garden. Think of a simple design or just regular “bangkito” , or plant sheves or stands, there are so many ways, coz the woods are still in very good condition, instead of wasted. By the way “hagdan” is a tagalog word for stair. Stay safe everyone

You could use the old stairs to hold your surfing boards. Could either but one or two poles on each end. Put the stairs at a height it makes it easy to work on the boards, and to retrieve them.

In Hawaii we joke with tourists that the pandanus fruit is pineapple because a lot of times they think that pineapple grow on trees. Not sure, but I think our pandanus is different than that in the PH. Never heard of anyone eating it before. Hawaiians have lots of other uses for it.

I was born & grew up in the P.I. , but I have never seen pandan tree in Cebu & Leyte. We did buy pandan powder at the store for dessert mix. Oh! by the way, what causes those bokbok effects is the salt water air, or I hope there's no termites in the area. You should treat the bamboos & the wood before you put the structure up. Don’t know if that’s the same as Thai Pandan leaves. Thais do wash and add the leaves into hot drinking water to flavour it. It is refreshing! It is also used to wrap steamed native cakes.

There are several bamboo species in the Philippines. The best is what they call matinik or thorny. i got my bahay kubo for more than 10 yrs now and the kubo is still intact. it has to be treated though with preservatives like solignum and coatings like wood stains and varnishes. no treatment will rot bamboo and wood easily.

Theres a type of wood oil that you can brush on wood to avoid it from rotting and stop termites from destroying it. If u put a bamboo near your hardwood those termites might start eating the hardwood too since bamboo can rot fast. An oil brush made for wood could avoid it from happening and treat your wood that is already starting to show signs of damage.☺
