Thanks. I am 70 and lost weight. Now I suffer from easily breaking down skin at my tailbone. You gave me 2 good things to do for myself. I appreciate it. So painful and aggravating. Thanks for the help.

You are so welcome! So glad I could provide some ideas to help protect your skin from breaking down… and so glad you are being proactive on preventing pressure injuries.

I’ve taken care of my quadriplegic son for 27 years. He I went to a Pittsburgh hospital and the nurse didn’t turn on the intermittent air and caused a bedsore. He’s in a nursing home now and they’re still caring for this bedsore 5 months later. He also developed one on his right side because he was kept laying on a drainage tube. It developed into a large quarter size hole. When I took care of him he developed hardly any. He bought a great alternating air mattress. These beds in nursing home are terrible. I’m taking problems into my own hand I have a call into the wound center at my local hospital with questions hopefully I’ll get a call back.

My father had a brain stem stroke in July 2023. He spent 40 days or so in the hospital and was sent to a long term care facility. There he developed a quarter size bed sore like your son. He’s been sent back to the hospital for treatment. His bed sore is getting better as the hospital rotates him every two hours. Speedy recovery for your son.

As a mother of an adult quad i can tell you from 40 years of experience. Air is the cure. A small personal fan to the area as long as possible. Keep the area clean but NOT wet. No dressing needed. The area will not increase or deepen. Nutrition is essential especially zinc Vit C and protein supplements are essential. Hope this helps. My daughter’s friends who have/had breakdowns take 90% longer to heal. Many times needing surgery. ❤

I would particularly like to know *how much* of a weight shift is needed to avoid creating a pressure ulcer. I’m finishing nursing school soon and will likely be working in an ER in the near future and people will often spend prolonged time waiting on a bed (multiple days is not out of the equation). I would hate for my patients to start a pressure ulcer that might end up with sepsis further down the road.
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
That is a great question! Just a small shift in weight is needed, such as placing a pillow under one hip. You don’t want to turn your patient completely on their side, because this puts pressure over the greater trochanter. After 2 hours, move the pillow under the other hip… and so on every 2 hours. LOVE that you already thinking ahead about how to protect your patient from pressure injuries!! You will be a great nurse. ❤️

Amazing video! How to we get elder parents who won’t eat to drink an ensure. Harder than it seems! Help
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
So glad it was helpful! I hear you about trying to get older loved ones to drink ensure… I am currently trying to get a loved one to get his protein intake up too! It is worth trying different brands and flavors to see if one is more tolerable than another. If the milk-like consistency is the problem, Naked juice makes a higher protein drink that may be worth trying.

What do we put for type 2 pressure sore?
@BobbieKing-mm5yh8 ай бұрын
Thankfully that’s minor you can use medihoney, also raw unfiltered honey works wonders. Definitely keep it dry and clean and covered with basic wound dressings. But again it’s stage two so definitely keep watch on it. Always glove up and of course wash your hands first. Right now I’m dealing with a stage 4 by myself. It’s hard to care for a loved one 24/7. Oh and the ointment you can just put that on there too. Best wishes and no I’m not a wound care nurse. Remember to switch positions regularly etc.

People....I was an RN for Hospice...and got 3-4 Stage 2-3 ulcers/decubitus ulcers to "finalize and heal". How? First, cut out the "processed foods; cakes, cupcakes, crackers, in other words....cut the high carbohydrate foods for 2-3 months....don't stop them in their' entirety....too difficult for older folks. But: Beef, butter, bacon and eggs, will help to heal these problems. Eating "bon-bons" and allowing this should be considered malpractice today. We need and deserve quality fats and proteins in the quantity needed for healing. This works. Get started today.

@frankfromupstateny3796 what did you use to treat the pressure ulcers. What creams, ointment or dressings. I know what works for one may not work for all but I would really like to know what you used.

Can you treat the breakdown skin from a pressure sore with aloe Vera leaf
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
There is data to suggest that aloe vera can help with pressure injury prevention and treatment. Here is a link to a good article: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6330525/

Hi , in what direction should we take off tape on the abdomen , When it comes to wounds or surgical sites what directions are we going in in terms taking a dressing off or irrigation I’m so confused .
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
It honestly doesn’t make much difference in what direction the tape comes off… only that it comes off without pain and skin damage. Using an adhesive remover and a push-pull technique (push down on skin while gently pulling up a dressing) can help. In terms of surgical site care, definitely defer to your surgeon‘a instructions. 👍

@LevelUpRN3 күн бұрын
There is not a specific medicine that can help it heal UNLESS it is infected. So it is best to have your dad’s sores seen by a doctor to see if an infection is present.
