Kudos to John Oliver being from Bedford. I lived there from 1967 to 1970 while my late father was stationed at RAF Chicksands. It is a scrappy town, but one with a lot of history, especially with the US. Keep us laughing, gentlemen from both sides of the pond.

Born near Bedford and Dad still lives there. Honestly its a weird place most of Bedford is a shit hole with a pretty high crime rate (wouldn't advise going down Midland Rd alone at night) but when I lived there it also had a scarily high number of private schools and a pretty bit near the river. Now at least they have a claim to fame in John Oliver :D Also Shuttleworth is really good, well worth a visit

To be fair the Shuttleworth Trust is one of the finest collection of vitage aircraft in the world and, unlike many simmilar collections keeps it's exhibits in full flying condition. Well worth a visit. (Mind you...the rest of Bedford isn't such a great place I admit!)

GYAAAAAH! I know Bedford! A history professor at my university does interviews of British WWII survivors (about the only thing he does well) and he interviewed a man who was originally from the Docklands of London and as a child moved out to Bedfordshire during the Blitz and stayed there. The man is like 80 and wears a gold chain. Scrappy is the word. And small English villages are the cutest things. Not a lot to do when your spending serveral weeks with no good transportation, but so gorgeous. America's small towns are dumps. I'll stop my "I miss England" nerd out now.

Bedford used to be great! Haven't visited in many years but it was a major destination for Italian immigration to the UK after the War. The brick-making factories employed hundreds of Italians there, including my great-uncle who came over from Italy to find work as London rebuilt after the War. Not sure how much of the community is left there now, but there are some damn good restaurants still there. Bedford is another town whose history has been quietly shaped by newcomers.

Fun fact: Bedford, Massachusetts is home to the first battle flag of America, essentially the first flag of America, the flag that was first shot at by the British in the Revolutionary War. You can go see it at the local library. It's super badass.

The board games that he named are actual board games. Those are are games from the board game hobby subculture (yes it's a real thing). These games are ridiculously fun. "Terror in Meeple City" (previously called "Rampage") is a game where you play as a giant monster and get to flick disks around, flick busses at your opponent's monsters, and drop your monster on buildings. Pandemic is a game where you and your friends work together to rid the world of diseases, and pandemic legacy, (which is the same game but with an interesting storyline that lasts 12-24 games) has been the top rated board game in the known universe for over a year. Their event makes me happy.
