At this level it's no that much of a rebuild, it's more of a... Build. That man is no longer wearing Redwings, he's wearing Bedo's Leatherworks Iron Rangers, as he has improved every part that was lacking before. Nice job.

I do a lot of business with another cobbler who has become very famous for his TokTok and You Tube videos. Every video he posts people are asking prices. It’s difficult for him to quote random prices because people have sent him in boots that are in much worse condition than whatever the ones in the video are then the customer expects to get the same price.

Agree!
@maddawgnoll5 ай бұрын
If you send your boots in like Jk boots or whites that have discounted rebuild programs, the uppers are the only part not replaced. They are basically new boots but technically in this business is a rebuild I guess. All because of that one piece of leather that the laces ride on is reused
@WolfMimirMori5 ай бұрын
@@maddawgnoll yet said JK boots uses a lot of leather for the uppers. Indeed it's more new than old, but saving some than nothing is still something.

At first I thought, $700, that seems like a lot. Then I thought of the amount of labor, the very high level of skill required to do it right, the machines and materials that are needed to do the work, and that the boot will be custom and built much better than when they originally came from the factory. You do incredible work.
@tarreemhacaruso2687Ай бұрын
$700 is a lot but he completely customized the shoe. The customer has a bespoke item now. Your right. Bedo does AMAZING work. The $700 was worth every Penny for this sort of work. ❤

It's great being able to do what you love to pay the bills. But with that comes a different set of headaches and stresses that are far beyond working for someone else. When you work for someone else you're not responsible for anything other than the job you were hired to do. When you work for yourself, every little detail becomes your life. Doing what you love usually ends up with owning your business and it's a different stress. But, in the end it's still great being able to do what I love and at the pace I set with the hours I want to work.

@@maddawgnoll It just sounds like you don't know how to run a business.
@maddawgnoll5 ай бұрын
@@andybaldman nah. My business is fine, but the stresses are just different. I'm not saying it's really bad or anything. But it is more serious when the money in the company is coming out of my pocket. (I put my entire life savings into getting a shop built and supplying it. Plus I'm only on my second year of this. It's not as bad as it was when I first started my leather making journey. To add to all this though, I was a caregiver for my grandparents. My grandfather passed in 2016 (damn cancer!) And my grandmother passed in 2020 (dementia). Then follow that up with an improperly filed trust by them made it so I had to sell the house that the entire family knew was going to me, decided to do the money grab instead. I lived in CA, and no way in hell could I afford to buy anything there, and I really wanted out of that shitbox. I moved to Montana right in the heart of the pandemic, and all the properties I had been looking at prior to the chaos tripled in price over that summer alone. Needles to say I couldn't get into anything I wanted but I'm not finished with life yet. My sister (only family left beside a couple cousins imo)has a chunk of land that I live on for the time being. Built a place (myself) and started a business all at the same time. It was stressful. Top it off with 70% of my orders come in during peak tourist season and there's less tourists this year by quite a bit. It's just all bad timing really. Two years earlier or two years later and it would be a much easier story to tell

*It's nice to see many people here appreciating the boots being rebuilded! The results look awesome! Many times over at the JK Boots and Nick's Boots KZbin channels, whenever they show rebuild videos, there's loads of people saying "Why not just buy a new pair of boots?". Their rebuild costs are significantly lower than the actual costs of their new boots, according to their ordering sites. Many of those people forget to realize, it's what the customer wanted, and there's sentimental value!* *I know the boots from those two channels are different to the ones on Steve's channel (and its two slightly different places). My point is that those channels are severely lacking the appreciation for their craftsmanship and expertise. Here on Steve's channel, there's so much more appreciation for his craftsmanship and expertise! People in the comments care about not wasting their shoes/boots. But over there, there seems to be a lot of people who would instead, throw their boots away lol 😅! It's just nice to see people here who would rather extend the life of their footwear, instead of throwing them into a landfill. I can already hear Steve's voice in the comments on those channels. "Hey man, just buy a pair of new boots!", "Hey man, how much of the original boots are left? I'm outta here!" lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣* *Amazing work Steve! Let's continue!*

It's so much fun to watch these transformations. Initially I did think, "how much? he could just go buy a new pair for less." But the thing is, he got a pair of custom boots that will far outlast anything new that he could purchase. I know a bit about making things by hand, and after I saw that you'd made custom lasts I thought (not that I know anything about being a shoemaker)" oh, he didn't charge enough for that." A pair of custom, hand-made boots would likely ring in at about 1000.- 1500. or more. You gave him a great deal. Great job as usual.

That's a very good price. I just finished an apprenticeship at a small cowboy boot maker (Stewart Boot) in Tucson. Our off-the -shelf boots were $595 handmade. It takes more work to repair than to fabricate from scratch. When you manufacture, you have standardization and you have efficient regular flow on your side. Yes, effectively you are building a one-off custom boot from scratch, but you have the added labor of carefully disassembling the old one and calculating how to incorporate those parts with the new. It's easier to have all new patterns and molds.

Wow, huge transformation to those kicks! LOVE that double stitched gemming, LEATHER lining, reinforced backing for the J-hooks, and added mid-sole! Purely subjective, if it were my money (since you were going that deep in) my "flavor" would've been a 360 degree welt. For break-in, I'd slather on the Bick4 on the inside leather to soften it up a tad and assist it in that molding to the hoof. I love the Bick4 so much, I've burned through two pints of it and have a fresh gallon jug ready to crack open. But then I have a lot of leather gear: rifle slings, holsters, belts, sheaths, footgear, sports equipment. Still need to attack my Tahoe's leather interior. Non-greasy, doesn't darken the leather, nourishes well, softens the leather. I'll bet it was fun punching that jerk needle through that buffalo hide. Beautiful work there, Steve. Ya know (Steve), you NEED a dog again. The shop NEEDS a mascot.

Great video and a really nice rebuild!!! A litte recommendation for molding the insoles to the last: In shoemaking many people use some sort of webbing or strap to wrap it around the last to shape the insole. I personally use an innertube from a bycicle tyre because it stretches and you can get a nice tension while wrapping it around the last. This way you don´t have to put more nails than necesarry through the insole and the insole perfectly takes the shape of the last.
