While Bram Stoker's Dracula has become the far more pervasive text, and indeed at the time garnered more popularity, John William Polidori's 'The Vampyre' was actually responsible for the image of the aristocratic or gentlemanly vampire and a lot of the other traits you mention in the creation of modern vampire narratives. It precluded Dracula by (I think) 80 years and was something Stoker was familiar with for sure. Obviously 'Dracula' is it's own entity but it didn't break the ground you claim it does here.

The largest sub at the beginning of World War II that mysteriously disappeared in 1942/43 in the Caribbean. To this day the loss of the Surcrof is the largest loss of life on a single submarine.

Wow, I lived near Dillsboro, North Carolina, for 20 years, and visited Dillsboro shops, all the time. I never knew this amazing history. Dillsboro has beautiful, family owned shops, with handmade fudge, candy, quilts, glassware, etc. It is a uniquely stunning place with the Tuskasegee Rivers & Little Tennessee Rivers running through. The train crash scene, from the movie, "The Fugitive" was filmed in that area. The train car is still there. And I worked in the ER & ICU that Harrison Ford pretended to be a doctor there, who saved a young boys life, rewriting orders for the child, in the same movie!

@Jerome Jam I have a friend that was in the service flying on a C-130 and used to drop skids of supplies on islands that are just north of Antarctica. They used those islands to refuel. There are no maps available to civilians showing these islands. Their basically bases and labs. Antarctica also has territories claimed by other governments and shadow governments like Rothschild. Google maps will believe it or not show that. He did 2 missions in Antarctica and could only tell me some small things that happened at "little America " i believe that was the name of the territory in the inlet. He said he wouldn't be able to tell me for many years to come. And we should be worried. I also noticed that Jeffrey Epstein's private jet was headed that way just south of Argentina and then they lost the blip about 100 nautical miles from Antarctica. This happened immediately after his so called death. Malaysia flight mh370 was headed in that direction too. So i believe it's an underground system and something greater.

More please! This is a great vid, and the theme of vampirism has popped up in one or two other videos, like the one on the aswang. However, I would love to see a follow up or two on vampires as such. There is plenty of true crime to talk about, like the killings of Peter Kürten, Fritz Haarman, John George Haigh, Richard Chase, Rod Ferrell, and so forth. There are also plenty of proper folklore stories. Arnold Paole, Petar Bagojević, and other unnamed vampires were reportedly dealt with in Eastern Europe, while in America, Sarah Tillinghast and Mercy Brown were known as vampires. I could easily see two long specials dealing with these stories, or a series. I was unaware of these two cases though, so this was very interesting and informative.

St Germaine is mentioned in one of the internet sites about New Orleans ghosts and hauntings - (not KZbin) I've read about him there. The two brothers is a new one though. @@goldo1107 They're legends, Marky. James Brown, a 25-year old former slave from Guyana, did kill one James Foster after the pair had fought over an alleged racial slur. The missing second crewman had never been on the ship, as he had overslept in a brothel and missed ship's movement. Brown was convicted of murder (no evidence came about involving him drinking blood) and sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted by Andrew Johnson because there had been a rash of death sentences handed down to former slaves in the post-Civil War era. Brown was a maniacal prisoner and everyone avoided him. The only people, however, known to have been attacked by him were two prison guards, one of whom he stabbed with a fork, and several inmates trying to bring him food during his 13 years of solitary confinement. He was sent to an asylum in Washington, D.C., but they sent him back to Boston immediately. Eventually, he was sent to a penitentiary in Ohio, where he calmed down, made little trouble and constantly harassed local, state and national politicians with all manner of requests, as he slowly and surely went insane. John and Wayne Carter were vampires of a sort. They did kidnap people, drain them of blood and drink that blood in the belief that it would make them strong. A girl did escape their clutches and led police to the Carters' apartment, where four victims (and two corpses) were discovered. It did take eight cops to arrest the pair, but not eight cops apiece. They were tried, convicted and executed by ordinary means. No stakes involved. As for Dillsboro, I don't know what to make of that. The best I could find was the murder of a married couple and a couple of young girls, whereupon neighbors chased the perpetrator to the Alfort residence. The next morning, Dr. Alfort and his wife were dragged out of the house. Neighbors demanded to know where their 15-year old son was. The parents refused to answer. As they were being held by scared vigilantes and not constables, the Alforts were killed and their bodies burned in their house. Prior to the fire, the cellar was searched and a crude coffin was found (only one). Unfortunately, it appears the men who had kept watch on the house during the previous night missed a painted-over window that led to the cellar. No trace was ever found of the son, but there were no more murders in Dillsboro or the surrounding communities. There was also a strange story about a bat-like creature seen in the branches of a tall tree. A hunter shot at it with a crossbow and the creature disappeared out of sight. The brush was thick and there were several small caves about in the underbrush and no one was brave enough to check. Perhaps, this was that missing son, hiding in the trees to be drilled by a cross bolt and, eventually, crawling in a cave to die. Who knows the truth? Was the son a vampire or, more likely, an extreme suffered of Porphyria? Was he just insane and being kept hidden by his parents, as was unfortunately common at the time? We will, likely, never know. However, like the Jersey Devil and Sasquatch, these stories will take on lives of their own in the course of time.

The one thing about Jerry Dandridge in the original (And not that awful remake!) was that whilst he appeared swathe and had the facade of sexy, cool elegance (And I'm a Dude! Lol!) Yet, when he showed his true form, he was fucking scary! Dwight from the Night Flyer was terrifying too! I hate that too, when they try to make Vampires these sad, lonely figures with class and elegance, they're blood sucking bastards! Here's a thought: in the story about Dr. Alfort and his wife, it's mentioned that there were THREE crates in the basement: one for the doctor, one for his wife, and one was unoccupied. What if the couple had retained JUST enough of their humanity and love for their son to plan on eventually turning him too, so that they would all be vampires together? I don't think he was a vampire at the time that his parents were caught by the mob, otherwise he would have been using the third crate. I am not saying that this is absolutely what happened, of course not. I'm just offering my own interpretation.

Derek Landy, author of the Skulduggery Pleasant series, came up with a rather fascinating combination of the two vampire archetypes: vicious, near rabid beasts with alabaster skin and eyes the colour of pitch. They grew regular human skin during the day which protected them from the sun and they regained their human intelligence and personality, and as soon as night fell they ripped it off like a set of clothes and became monsters again until dawn. I read (I believe) the second book when I was 11 which was their first appearance in the series and oh god did they terrify me.

I was wondering when a video about vampires would appear as there are countless stories about them. I do highly recommend Bram Stoker's Dracula. It is very well written and superbly vivid. A magnificent piece of classic literature. I'm currently reading Frankenstein and that is shaping up to be a good book to read too.

I already read both, and I can assure you, they're both great novels that are radically different from what we think of them these days [with notable "differences" being that Frankenstein's monster isn't some creature with a "dumb muscle" personality (not to mention being birthed by some unknown means, and we don't know whether that involves electricity) while Dracula wasn't even hurt by the sun; he was just powerless because of it (he actually has a beard and a goatee in the novel compared to some descriptions of him these days)].

@Libby Berman it was still considered a case of vampirism; not by us, but by the standards of a time when infection and decomp were not as understood as they are now. There's many a story of "vampires" being dug up and desecrated by people not knowing how bodies decompose. We shouldn't overlook these situations; they help provide a viewpoint into how societies were at that time, although there's some that sadly still believe in this superstition.

In 1968 in Defiance, Ohio (about half an hour from my hometown), there were apparently sightings of a vampire. Around the same time, a man named John Brennan Crutchley was attending the college there (he graduated in 1970), and later worked at the local GM plant. He eventually ended up in Florida, where he was arrested in the mid-1980s for the kidnapping and rape of a teenager whose blood he drank. The "Vampire Rapist" (as he came to be known) was also suspected of other murders and disappearances. Going back to the Defiance vampire sightings, with the exception of a passing reference on a Facebook forum, I've never seen anything explicitly connecting them to Crutchley, But the fact that he was in the area around the same time, and given his subsequent nickname, seems quite a coincidence. As well, in 1972, people in Defiance also reported seeing a werewolf. Perhaps that story's connected to the other two? Mind, none of these connections would stand in a court of law. But it's difficult not to speculate.
