The Bee Gees re-invented themselves during the disco era to remain relevant, and struck gold in the process. But make no mistake, they were HUGE in the '60s long before disco ever became a thing. Check out "To Love Somebody," "Massachusetts," "Lonely Days," and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" for a sampling. Also, go Google "Songs written by the Bee Gees for other artists" and you'll be surprised at just how prolific they were. Check out "Woman In Love" by Barbra Streisand, arguably the greatest female vocalist of the 20th century. They wrote the song for her. And "Immortality" was written by them for Celine Dion. "Islands in the Stream" by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers -- another song written by the Bee Gees. They were multi-talented and simply amazing. Easily one of the top five groups of all time.

Bee Gees The Day-By Day Story, 1945-1972 (published 2012) by Andrew Sandoval, a music historian who was part of the reissues of early Bes Gees material includes info not easily found online. For the book, he had access to the original studio recordings (including out takes), historical documents, and past and new interviews with Barry and band members. There is no comment on anything special with the instruments on Joke; however, you may be interested in BARKER OF THE UFO. Barry has been fascinated with UFO’s from early childhood. You can’t find much online other than the song itself, but Sandoval says it was recorded August 1, 1967, and: “The production will be built up from one track of backwards percussion.” The original recording was in mono and was the B side of Massachusetts in the UK, but was not included on a 60’s album. (Neither was Barry’s classic “Words.”) Sandoval says, “In 1990, Bill Inglot will mix the song to stereo for the first time for the TALES FROM THE BROTHERS GIBB box set.” Barry does all of the vocals and acoustic guitar, and Maurice plays bass, and probably piano. Robin is not mentioned as being in the studio that day. I’d be interested in your reaction to it.

I had not yet become a "true blue" Bee Gees fan when this song was being played on the radio. I do remember thinking that this guy had a very unique voice. Also, the subject of the song was "different". But back in those days, we listened to AM radio and all different types of popular music were played. The categorization of radio stations into playing only "soul" or "hard rock" or "pop", etc had not yet happened. I didn't realize what we had until it was gone. To quote Joni Mitchell.

It's Robins signature song, played in every live-concert of them. The album Idea charted much better in Europe than in the US. The titlesong "Idea" and "Let there be love" are worth a listen, too, though it has even other good ones on board.

Thank you for this one. The live version from their 'one for all' tour is amazing. So far the best I've seen so far. Anyway, a great Bee Gees classic. Please have a go at 'Overnight' from the E.S.P. album. It has Maurice on lead vocals.

Idea was there third album following 1'st and Horizontal. The album is also unique in the sense that it had a song on it that was not written by one or more of the brothers. It was "Such A Shame" written by Vince Melouney who was the drummer in the band from 67-69. Other songs to listen to is "In The Summer Of His Years", "Swan Song", When The Swallows Fly" and yes "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" which only was on the US release and not included on the European release.

The entire "Idea" album had a rather thin sound. The Bee Gees commented in 1989 that they were unhappy with the production of their early albums. Live performances had a better arrangement and sound. Some of my favs from that album are "Kilburn Towers", "Swan Song" (which is made for a Broadway show) and of course the other big hit "I've Gotta Get A Message To You"....if you react to the "Message", look for the version found on "Tales From The Brothers Gibb" box set. This has the best mix.

Great song of their late 60's period, if you want to hear an eccentric side of them try Edison came to stay from (Odessa) 1969 - their tribute to Thomas Edison ( how many songs are dedicated to him) or I Held a Party (Too Whom it may concern) 1972 (Poor Robin held a party and nobody came)
@jaybrielakoi77473 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I need to put that on my list.

As for the IDEA album, the 2 timeless classics are Joke and I’VE GOTTA GET A MESSAGE TO YOU. (Tons of options for this one!!) I highly recommend the title song video: BEE GEES IDEA FRENCH TV 1968. They have sooooo much music to cover that you’ll have to be selective with which albums you give focused attention to. Bee Gees First and Odessa are probably their most acclaimed (then and now) from the 60’s. You may want to just hit the highlights from Horizontal, Idea, and Cucumber Castle (my favorite of these three).

I think you might appreciate the emotional subtleties of the live version a bit more. It is literally a soliloquy being sung. Also check out "I Gotta Get A Message To You".

There is a newer version of this song in the Suicide Squad OST. To be honest I don't even know that version in its entirely. I just heard a part of it in some trailer. It's just cool to know that this song is such a classic and stil can fit in other projects, even being a remake or cover or something. Stil.. There's no voice like Robin's to this song.

I like that you can say that you see how it might have been popular but it's not something you like.
@jaybrielakoi77473 жыл бұрын
well i gotta be fair. The songs are judged at the time of release and that's obviously a complete time period difference. Like honestly, I can see why people like our music these days at least most of it. If you look at it our popular music gets progressively and progressively simpler because we're getting dumber.

@@jaybrielakoi7747 this song grows on you. I'm not really a Robin fan or a fan of his voice but this song has the capability of growing on you it sort of gets into your mind. There's always some discussion about what it means and apparently Robin never really disclosed the meaning of this song.

Thank you. I'd say the most impactful song from the "Idea" album is "Gotta Get a Message To You," with Robin and Barry alternating lead. For some reason, there were two versions of that song released, right out of the gate. The single version and the album version were different, even though they were released at almost the same time. The tempo is slightly different. And one version (the one I prefer) has Maurice belting out "I just gotta get a message to HER" during the wind-down repeat chorus, while the other version has kind of an empty spot there. Here's my preferred version. [The majority of YT vids have either the other original version or a newer version.] kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXzdd2mKnM58gbc

How is it that you’ve done like 100 Bee Gees songs, but still haven’t done “More Than a Woman”? Are you intentionally avoiding that one or something? It’s one of their biggest songs, and was also in the John Travolta movie Saturday Night Fever....
