After some rehearsals, Barry and Kenny felt it should be a duet. Dolly Parton happened to be downstairs in another studio...and the rest is musical history.

This is my favorite Bee Gee's song. My patents grew up huge BG's fans and so did I. Took me a good while to appreciate them for the excellent writers they are but in my late 20's and early 30's I took a much deeper notice and appreciation of them. You have got to love the last chorus, the build up and the way Barry sings "Islands In the stream, that is what we are", just that little inflection he puts on those lyrics,makes it majestic, just drives the song home, you can not learn that, that is nature and their pure talent. They can write all the songs they want for other artist, but no artist will deliver the lyrics the way the do!!!!! Been a fan when being a fan was not cool as a young teen during the anti disco era, when all my friends were into all the metal and such, I stayed true!!

I once saw in an interview where Barry said Maurice wanted to keep and record this song but of course we know Dolly/Kenny ended up with it. Every time they perform this, I enjoy Maurice animated performance. You can tell that he enjoyed singing it. One of the many reasons I love these brothers so much. They were/are special.

They all had "real" talent in every thing they did. Wish more people realized they had a music career long before they were swept into the disco craze. People should read the lyrics of their early songs and realize they were younger than the Beatles when they wrote them. The first time I heard "I gotta get a message to you" on the radio (was in high school). Thought who is singing that beautiful, heartbreaking song. Got to find out. Thankfully, I did and have been a fan ever since.
