One of my favs from the early days. I beleive this was their first number 1 hit in UK. I like Robin's vocals on this one, and of course the harmonies and blending.

It was their first global number 1. Lead by Robin. I was 3 years old and kept repeating 'Massachusetts' as I live in the UK I had no idea what it meant; it was a nice word!

They sing this live in concert from a tour of Australia in 1989 if you want to see a live version of this. Better than this album version at another time. "I Started a Joke" "To Love Somebody" if you havent reacted to those yet are real good

It is their anti flower power song. San Francisco stood for flower power and Massachusetts represented home. They were saying flower power is a phase and you need to go back home. When they wrote it they hadn’t been to Massachusetts and couldn’t spell it. I agree with other comments the 1989 live version is even better. Other 60s songs are Holiday, To love somebody, 1st of May, New York mining disaster 1941, I ST of May, I Started a Joke and Words (1989 in Melbourne my favorite version). ❤

Also, you mentioned the difference between their 60 songs which this is and their disco era, their in between transitional era is best personified by the album Main Course, if you haven’t listened to anything off of that, it’s a beautiful album and it just about every single song on it is worth listening to😊

Main Course is my favorite album (tied with Size Isn't Everything), with Mr. Natural a close second. I really like that mid 70s era and a lot of the post-fever era too. So much great music from these brothers.

I think this may have been their first hit in the US ... of course they had been performing in their home country of Australia since they were quite young, as the 'Brothers Gibb' band ...

They started as the "Rattlesnakes" in 1955 in their home country Uk. 1958, the Rattlesnakes disbanded when Frost and Horrocks left, so the Gibb brothers then formed Wee Johnny Hayes and the Blue Cats, with Barry as "Johnny Hayes". 1960 the radio-presenter jockey Bill Gates named the group the "BGs" (later changed to "Bee Gees") after his, Bill Goode's , Barbra Gibb and Barry Gibb's initials. The name was not specifically a reference to "Brothers Gibb", despite popular belief. There never was a "Brothers Gibb" band and Australia was NOT their home country, they only lived 10 years as children/teenagers there!

@@MrJacksonHolly NO, Andy, the youngest brother was still born In Manchester, UK in 1958, they moved to Australia after his birth and returned to UK in 1967!
