Words are all I have to take your heart away - such a beautiful lyric. Another of my all time favourite Bee Gees songs that has been done by so many artists. Rita Coolidge did a good version. Also, Barry released an album in 2021 that was called Greenfields where he sang Bee Gees hits as duets with other artists. Keith Urban and Barry - I've Got To Get a Message to You and Dolly Parton and Barry with Words. Hope you continue with your trip down the massive rabbit hole that is the Bee Gees music.

Their songs 'To Love Somebody' and 'Words' had the biggest impact to the world of music, especially in the eyes of other great musicians. Hundreds of covers, over the planet. And Nr. 1 songs for Michael Bolton and Boyzone, decades later, even not for themselves in the late sixties, but charting very well in many countries. Bee Gees had Nr. 1 hits in the late sixties with also the great tracks 'Massachusetts' and 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'. Perfect excample, that people arent always ready, to identify every milestone right at time. For me, 'To Love Somebody' is lil above the others.

This song was recorded on October 3, 1967. Barry was 21 and the twins Robin and Maurice were 18. It always surprises me how young they were and how talented to write songs like this at such tender ages. They also wrote To love somebody in 1967 for Ottis Redding, although Ottis died in an airplane crash before he could record it. Their manager Robert Stigwood told Barry to write a song for him and in the morning Barry went to him with the song. Stickwood loved it and Barry and the twins completed it. Barry was famous for writings songs in less than an hour, and not just any song but great songs. The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time when they came to the US for the first time. I remember the whole family sitting around the TV so exited watching them. The same with The Bee Gees. What wonderful memories!
@dp33962 жыл бұрын
If you want to be exact and your date is correct, I think Barry would have just turned 21 the month before, but the twins would still have been 17, not turning 18 until (I think) December 29.
@janicetrimmell68972 жыл бұрын
This is the very first time I remember seeing and hearing the Bee Gees. Ed Sullivan was every Sunday night viewing for my family. The melody may be simple, but it is impactful and emotional, as is Barry's voice. You can see why this became his signature song. His young voice is quite exposed, especially near the end and he never waivers in tone or pitch. Barry turned 22 and the twins turned 19 later that year. They were so young, but so very polished. I was 11, and fell in love instantly. Vince (guitarist) and Colin (drummer) joined the brothers shortly after arriving back in England in 1967. They knew them from Australia. By the time about 1969 rolled around, and some instability between the brothers, Vince left and later Colin. I very much enjoy Vince's guitar work. There is a video of him playing "I Started A Joke." as an instrumental. It gives me goosebumps. I just love the guy. When the Bee Gees did the 1999 One Night Only Concert in Sydney, Vince joined them on stage for 3 songs. Here's Vince kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHrQemiXpduojrc He is wonderful.

Written specifically for the British film The Mini Mob (The Mini-Affair in the U.S.), starring '60s heartthrob Georgie Fame, the stately, gentle "Words" was released as a single in January 1968 and brought the new year in with a bang, reaching number 15 on the pop charts. It ultimately found a home on The Best of the Bee Gees compilation the following year. According to Robin Gibb, the song was inspired by separate arguments which he and brother Barry had just endured. Neither was about anything in particular, "they were just words. That is what the song is all about; words can make you happy...or sad." Interestingly, Barry alone sings on the record. It was the first Bee Gees single not to feature both brothers.

The singer Lulu (To Sir With Love) is Maurice Gibb's ex-wife. She asks him to appear on her show and sing a duet for a song the BeeGees wrote called "First of May".
