Yay, she’s on board! There’s no other group like The Bee Gees. Their voices, their songs, their lyrics, just touch your soul! I always liked them but when I was younger I didn’t take the time to really listen. Now there are certain songs and in some songs Barry’s voice makes my eyes tear up. The same with Robin’s voice. With Maurice Closer than close just moves me, though he’s got many more that I love were he takes the lead. We mustn’t forget the very talented Andy Gibb with his I just want to be your everything. Thank you both, it was a great reaction.

Barry does indeed always turn his back and invariably draws attention to himself and away from Robin because performers so rarely do that. It is noticeable in a way that simply standing and playing his guitar as he normally would is not. To ostentatiously defer is not really deference at all; it is saying “Hey! Look how deferential I am!” The only way you would notice Barry while Robin is singing this song is for Barry to do exactly what he does.

Robins natural voice and his vibrato are what makes him stand out. Maurice (pronounced Morris) has a few songs that he has done lead on that also showcase his natural voice. Barry's falsetto is what most people identify with the Bee Gees but that is primarily from the point when the Disco phase began. They wrote the entire score for the movie Saturday night fever. Their youngest brother Andy as well as the twins Robin and Maurice have all passed away leaving Barry who is the oldest as the only surviving brother.

A shame you didn't do a version of this songs when he was younger with a more powerful voice. This was pretty much Robin's song. He said the melody and idea came to him listening to the engines of a plane over Germany. Robin was always thought to be a loner and said he had trouble communicating with people so often felt misunderstood but his lyrics showed he could express himself very well. This song was so personal that he wanted it played at his funeral. Bodyguard, Juliet (Live in Berlin), Black Diamond, Rings around the moon, Ellan Vannin with the King's College Choir, Country Lanes, all show many different sides of his voice. May I please request "Juliet" Live in Berlin in 1991. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5DWg5qVgpykjLs

Not too many Robin songs like one after another due to dynamic performances. And so again: it's the three of them, makin' the whole thing complete. Barry and Robin with their individual, great vocal-abilities and Maurice, bringin' it always to perfect three-part harmony in thrilling chorusses.

@@generationgapreacts Words is lead by Barry. There are a couple of videos of Robin singing "Words" while touring solo after Maurice passed, but it is considered to be Barry's song. Robin usually took a break when they sang it in concerts, although there are some live versions where they added 3 part harmony in the last chorus. I think "I Can't See Nobody" is one of Robin's most lyrically beautiful songs, and the version he sings on the Midnight Special pours his heart and soul into it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIqyZX6Hadhjf6s

I haven't caught up yet on your other Bee Gees reactions yet but at some point, when you want to sprinkle in younger brother Andy, there's a beautiful tribute they did to him during 'Live in Las Vegas 1997 - One Night Only, just one of the songs originally done by Andy, written by Barry called "Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away)". The Bee Gees also recorded a version of the song but didn't release it until a year after Andy had done it, and they mesh the two together as a tribute during this live show.

If you look closely you can see his brother Barry is playing the guitar and his back is facing the audience. He wanted to give his brother total 100% attention when he was singing this song. They had a lot of feuding in the early days and there was a lot of fighting between Barry and Robin as to who was going to be the lead singer, But I think they finally figured it out and they each had a chance to be in the spotlight. His voice is like that Of an angel!

I give Barry the benefit of the doubt ( a bit anyway) but he accomplishes the exact opposite of giving Robin 100% of the attention. You can’t help but notice him with his back to the audience as evidenced by how often his posture is commented upon. You think “Oh look, Barry is being respectful to Robin” when you shouldn’t be noticing anything but Robin’s amazing vocals. No one ever comments on what Maurice does because he does nothing unusual to draw attention to himself. Barry does and it’s noticeable.

The Gibbs are all very humorous. They say many of the songs start with humorous lyrics. This is actually a humorous play on words. You definitely can’t take “I fell out of bed hurting my head on things that I said” seriously. The song is literally the joke that made the world cry. It’s not sad at all. It’s Robin’s humor delivered seriously.. Listen again... but to an earlier version... and hear the teenage creative humor:) Please react to WORDS 1989, please. The 1989 concert performances is are definitely fan favorites.

Watch their "Early Performances" video and you will see a totally very humourous Robin,in particular, aged around 8 when they perform 2 numbers in Australia.

I must respectfully disagree that there is anything remotely humorous about this song. It is about as emotionally raw as a song can be. Robin is not winking at us here; he is pouring his heart out. You cannot put what he put into every performance of this song if you are slyly being comical. Every audience he ever sang this for felt this. Like the proverbial duck, if it walks like a sad song, quacks like a sad song, waddles like a sad song, it’s a sad song.

Likewise respectfully, the Gibbs were more talented professionals than you are giving them credit for. Also, you have probably heard them say the listener can interpret Joke for themselves. I hear Robin’s intellect and witty humor coming through the lyrics, while at the same time find his dramatic performances magical. Perhaps happy people are more likely to hear happy, creative hear creativity, humorous hear humor. and sad hear sad. Some listeners don’t like sad songs sung by sad songwriters, and may choose not to listen to Joke again if thought depressing. My encouragement is because I believe the song is worthy of more than that. That being said, I’m glad you commented, and totally respect your right to your point of view. Happy 2023!!

@@dp3396 The Bee Gees were highly talented but this was a sad song to the extent that it was played by Robin's son on Robin's deathbed and also at Robin's Funeral.. Happy New Year and Good Luck for 2023.

I can see your eyes tearing up! Me too. God, how I miss him. Three out of four brothers gone. And the oldest brother left alone. The last man standing. I understand his pain.

Robin also wrote a song called Hold ON To My Love, which he did but gave the song to a Motown guy called Jimmy Ruffin, worth a listen to both versions
