tipping it while still a little warm then putting a damp rag around it will help speed up the vacuum formation. After that, keeping the temp as stable as possible will minimize leakage.

I like sitting and watching to see how many different colors of pollen the bee's bring in, the feeder looks like a great idea might have to try I have all the stuff for them. How many per hive?
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
I only use 1 feeder per hive but you could use bigger jars if they are strong hives.

It's not the syrup warming up after a cool night as much as it is the air. Air expands and will push out a little syrup. The emptier the jar gets, the more it will push out when there is a temperature change.

What's your plan for plugs when your not feeding? Have you gave that any thought? I ordered some rubber plugs but they may be too small. I got 1/8" to 1/4" and I probably should have gotten 1/8" to 3/8".

This video was perfect. I really enjoyed the first time you talked about these feeders and wanted an update. What I have wanted to know is how quickly a strong colony can pull a qt jar down? If you do your follow up. See if you can state how long it takes to empty. Thanks again for your time and detailed information!
@russellkoopman30042 жыл бұрын
I've seen a quart jar gone in a day but I use a metal lid with 3 small holes in the lid. I use the Classic Spaghetti one piece lid and replace every two or so years if they get rusty.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with Russell, usually a strong colony can empty a quart in a day. These jar feeders are more designed for small colonies your trying to build up. They would be perfect for small splits. I sell 5 frame nucs, so even though the nucs are strong they aren't as strong as a 10 frames colony therefore a quart jar may last 2-3 days. They do make gallon mason jars though, so a person could use the bigger jar with the nipple feeder on big colonies.
@russellkoopman30042 жыл бұрын

@downunderfulla60012 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve never seen golden rod up here. Apparently it grows around our southern state border and south. I honestly don’t know this new area I’m in now. All the native trees (bush land) are different apart from what people have planted in their yards. My little town is 10km/6m from the big smoke and is surrounded by sugarcane paddocks

I never thought about the rust, I have a couple jars with holes in the lids that leak, that must be why. I just drill a hole the size of the jar lid in the lid.

I bet if you extend your jute a foot or two you'll create a larger feeding surface feeding more bees at once. As long as it flows well.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
I don't see any reason to extend the jute as I will be using these feeder for nucs.
@strutt012 жыл бұрын
I have never seen one in action. But I am just trying to imagine how many bees can all feed at once.is it 10-20 hanging off the end of the tube? I guess if they take a quart down a day then it all ends the same.
@BlanchardsBees2 жыл бұрын
Take it with a gain of salt cause I'm still a newbee but in my opinion with as much as bees consume when needing fed, using a jar is just kinda a big hassle unless its a very small coloney but thats just my 2 cents and I've never used them so I honesty don't know. Cool video friend👍🐝
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
I agree completely.😉 The feeders work very well for splits into nucs which I later sell. I really like the 5 over 5 frames setups.
@fuzzynuggetsbees2 жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you did this video because I’ve had trouble with leaking too. But I expected leaking to stop after the first 30 seconds or so. The jute seemed to make it worse so I had taken it out. I will try again and give it more time. On another note: if Ladybug puts on her pretty new Easter dress today, you do need to post a photo for us.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
I was hoping the video would be helpful. I learned a lot from the test too. I always thought that it stopped within seconds of flipping the jar over too, now I know it can take up to 10 minutes. I also know the temperature plays a tole on the dripping. Are you using plastic or metal lids?
@fuzzynuggetsbees2 жыл бұрын
I’m using the plastic lids too. I used hot glue to seal it all together. Maybe the epoxy would be better. I noticed that you have to really get a good seal and it’s sort of hard to do with hot glue if you want to avoid getting fingers burned.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Hot glue may be fine, you just have to make sure it doesn't have any air holes like you stated. I got the epoxy from Dollar General for $5 and that one tube would do at least 50 nipple feeders. Best of luck!!
@CastleHives2 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzynuggetsbees Karen, make sure the seal is pretty good. I used metal lids at first then switched to plastic like Jason uses.
@fuzzynuggetsbees2 жыл бұрын
@@CastleHives thank you... I think my hot glue gun wasn’t the best method. But as Jason showed, the leaking should stop after minutes rather than seconds. I wasn’t being patient enough I think.

Amazon sells stainless steel lids
@joeyl.rowland41532 жыл бұрын
Jason you have bees, you have wax. Coat those lids with beeswax. Will help stop the rust. My thing, is being in Florida every hive around is active. There is no winter here to slow them down. I have noticed that feeding at the hives is problematic, because of robbing. I know 2 beekeepers who lost hives because of robbing, and they were using Boardman feeders. I don't feed my bees at the hive(I don't have cold weather to keep my bees in the hive) I try to feed on the opposite corner of my property away from my hives. Robbing is common here, I have 6 hives, and I am aware of 15 wild hives that are all within 1500 hundred feet of my bees. If I had more room in my yard I could capture wild hives everyday, I have no problem finding bees. There are 15 or 20 commercial yards within a couple of miles from my house. Their bees come and go with the farming seasons but they lose swarms on a regular basis. When you have 300 hives stacked 3 deep it is hard to catch all your swarms.
@Bourbonsouth472 жыл бұрын
Little steel wool & about 10 secs a jar solves that rust issue! That being said if u have numerous hives I'd for sure go plastic but with my apairy it's not that big a deal to clean the jars
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Your 100% correct! They aren't hard to clean but for me it's all about preventive maintenance. Cleaning will work for some but for me there are too many tasks on a farm to going around fixing issues. The older I get the more this stand true too. lol

How do you control any problems. Last fall I tried feeders on top of hive and ran into carpenter ants galore inside of my hives. I removed the feeders and they went away. I have not seen anyone else mention this problem but I can not imagine I am the only one with this issue.
@JCsBees2 жыл бұрын
Do you have chickens? My chickens are deadly to ants but from time to time I do have ant issues. Some people coat their hive stands with old motor oil so the ants will not climb. Cinnamon also works sprinkled around the hive but needs done after each rain.
