Build update: After filling with shavings and looking over the bottom, I added 1/4" thick wood strips over where the screen was stapled to add some "insurance" that the screen would not come loose.🙄

Cool idea on the vents. I do the same design but i rout the center of the 2x6 and add plywood with a hole for better insulation with fondant feeding screens. I also add a 2 inch foam board under the cover on top.

Hi Roger. Outstanding craftsmanship with your equipment. Quick question for you: do you have a video showing your typical stacking of boxes, candy boards and quilt boxes? I’d be interested to see exactly what you do for over wintering Thanks in advance sir. Totally thumbs up!!!!

Two deep supers (brood boxes), making sure upper is well stocked with honey, then candy board, then quilt box.

You should have that assembly board on a lazy susan. Mr Ed builds with one if you would like to see an example it works really fast and less fumbling around

I do now. At the time I made this video, I only made a couple and had not intended on selling them, or candy boards. That all changed in summer of 2021. I have three different assembly jigs, all on industrial lazy susan bases.

The boxes I built are from older medium supers. I installed 1/4 bottoms. 3/8 up from bottom using 3/4 frame. The floors have two screened holes. These boxes make a ventilation top for south Texas summers and a few inches of chips for the winter months too. An all year replacement for inner covers

Hi Roger, I am first year beekeeping. I really like your idea of quilt boxes that you have made. I have done same thing to my hive. Do bees get enough water in winter with quilt boxes on top? All warm air goes through the shavings and becomes condensation, but bees left with no water inside the hive. Too much water in the hive is bad, but how to provide them enough water during the winter since condensation is formed on top of the shavings?

I've never had an issue with water shortage for the bees in winter. they must be getting it somewhere...........

There is still some condensation on the inner sides and that is fine because it don't rain on the bees.

I use both SAE and Metric all the time. Sometimes using both on the same project...........Just to mess with some people!
