It still surprises me every time that the bees don't really try to defend their home when you're removing the comb. How often would you say the bees live in harmony with rats? Another great vid mate, cheers for posting!
@JPthebeeman4 жыл бұрын
Rats & bees really do not live in harmony. Rodents usually move into a weak hive only if they can & that’s almost always during winter. I mentioned in the video going into the bee yard & finding dead rats early spring or late winter in front of the hives. Those rats obviously didn’t fair well.

The bees that don't hive up or get vacuumed and get left behind. Will they be able to hook up with another hive or just die ?
@JPthebeeman4 жыл бұрын
k VanDyke stragglers that miss the boat so to speak could potentially join up with another colony but it needs to be close or they will likely perish. If enough are left behind however, they could go into survival mode, even build comb & try to make a go of it but without a Queen or the resources to make a queen they are eventually doomed.

Always fun to watch these. Too bad about the rats. Have come across that issue before with a house I had purchased long ago. It is amazing how long that smell can last, it was a old nest no rats in it any more. But I made sure those things where gone with a exterminator. Just caught a couple of mice. But I used some soapy water, rinse and used some bleach afterwards to insure that it was sanitary. Can bees get any illness from rats and mice? I know people can.

@JPthebeeman4 жыл бұрын
I don’t keep them all, goodness no. I used to have many different bee yards but had to cut way back on that, just too busy to keep up with everything. The last few years I have been donating most of the colonies to my good friend Schawee who is in many of my videos. Schawee places the bees on 3,000 acres of swampland in Gonzales, Louisiana. I’m hoping to do a video soon with Schawee & I going through some of the hives at this location.

Sorry I have a bunch of questions, however first I just want to say watching you save bees is great . My first question is do bee keepers have any issues with mice getting into the hives ? Why was the comb in this hive so brittle ? Rats can’t control their bladder in part because their urine trail is a scent marking for other rats in the same family or colony to find food source . Since the comb was contaminated with rat pee I hope and pray you don’t get an influx of rats in your bee yard or whoever’s yard this hive goes to until the bees are able to rebuild and get rid of the rat contamination in the hive pieces . Did you wear a mask as rat excrement and urine and the rats themselves carry diseases.

I love EVERY video! 2000 eggs ... in ONE DAY?! #0£¥ smokes! “PJ the ManBee” ROTFL! I always wondered if you encountered “Africanized Killer Bees,” and what do you do then? I LOVE learning about Bees! I used to be horrified of them. And while I *AM* allergic to stings, I am curious about visiting apiaries and being “up-front, close, and personl.” I rescued one bee last fall, but I didn’t expect she’d’ve made it. She lost her colony, was driven miles and miles hanging outside the car. So I petted her wee li’l bee-head, covered her from the rain, and wished I had brought her home and fed/kept her the last of her life ((it was pretty cold up here in New England, but she was out on a drizzly New England Autumn ... she got disoriented somehow)). 🐝
