Waiting for some goodies from the postman so I’ve been continuing work on the incline only to realise I had no flexible track left.
A quick search on the internet to look for some code 100 track I was amazed to find that there was a model shop only 9 miles from where I live. How have I not known this place existed?? 20 minutes later and I have a couple of pieces of flex track. This is definitely a shop I will be visiting again….
I’m taking a risk by adding a point at the top of the incline - I just hope I don’t live to regret this idea!!
As always, Thanks for watching.

congratulations on finding a hobby shop close by. if you feel that the outside track is too close to the edge get some plexiglass to line that side of the track. it will keep derails from becoming floor trains. things seem to be progressing nicely. Keep up the amazing work.

I was going to suggest the same. The moment you turn your back a train will jump onto the floor. Has happened to me.

I can’t tell you how excited I was!! I think a small edging across that front would be a very sensible idea! 👍👍

Rather than an under board mount, perhaps you can consider a surface mounted point motor such as the Peco PL-11 or Hornby R8243.

Yes! Obvious solution. Never even thought about a surface mounted point. Thank you 👍

More progress and very interested in how you are finding gradients with different types of locos. Later in the year we will be moving and a new layout space so watching your developments closely! As for the point on the gradient, having mastered the art of placing points above baseboard struts, surface mounted point motors are available. I have Peco and Rails of Sheffield and both work fine. Well worth doing as it will drive you mad to have to duck under the board every time you want to send a train to the fiddle yard and loop! I would also put an edge on the gradient as it is all too easy to lean across the baseboard and accidentally drag a train off… another art I have mastered!

Ha. I will definitely be putting a lip across the front. Of course!! Surface mounted point - obvious solution. 👍👍

You need plastic sheeting around 2mm thick and only a few inches high to prevent accidental falls. I use ( I think it’s called polycarbonate sheeting) about 1 foot high to keep my flippin cats off 😽!!! Great work!

pop a little lip on that close edge, and maybe a 20 mm baton before that to give a bit of flexibility on the track. the Y points also can be thrown by the loco if its coming back with an auto reverser. (not best practice but useful if you forget to flip the switch). much better to have it derail where you can get to it than buried under the layout. Your engine shed and turntable is great inspiration to me! i'm making a Didcot style layout with coaling stage ramp and engine shed but seeing a finished item is great.

Yes, I think a lip would be a sensible option! Like the sound of your plan for your coaling stage and engine shed. Good luck with it 👍

You could put a DCC Concepts power base on the helix and the incline.

Always interesting to hear your comments and watch your progress... Possibly the only OO steam loco' model with double-drive gears is the Bachmann 9F, something they were Not aware of until I mentioned itto them!! The laugh was that when I asked Why steam loco' models don't have extra drive-gears (Hidden!) the response was that it would be unprototypical!! In relation to the last response, does that make the Bachmann 9F Unprototypical..?? Nothing to stop Any/All manufacturers producing steam models with extra-drive to give them better pulling-power, especially on inclines.

Thank you. Really? I agree, it’s a shame that steam engines do struggle more on inclines!

Have you considered building your own helix. Depending on how many full turns you need, one 8x4 sheet of shuttering ply will make two full turns of 4th radius up and 3rd radius down curves although you do have a circle of wood almost three feet diameter of waste, or a top for a coffee table. Eight 60cm lengths of 8mm threaded bar and a few nuts and washers, and bobs your uncle. I will try to send a video. 🤞 By the way, I don’t think you live far from me, near Gainsborough.
