Kent, I tried this recipe, and my husband and I love it! In Sept 2022, my 37 year old son-in-law received news that his 2nd battle with cancer was about to begin. After he began cancer treatment, I made a batch of this goulash and took it to him and my daughter. This is about the only food he can eat due to nausea. So this lasts about 3 days. I am so thankful I found your delicious recipe. I never would have thought of what a blessed meal this would become... Thank you! *I wanted to add that this has become the dish I have ready for him each time after he has his chemo. I made a batch today, first meal he's been able to keep down. I will continue to make "Kent's Goulash" after each treatment. *September 15, 2023 I am saddened to share my precious son in law passed away. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 25, 2023. He fought long and hard. What an amazing young man. He leaves behind his wife and 2 and a half year old son.

I have an aunt who went on her local PBS station during a fundraiser to promote a book of her hot dish recipes. One of her granddaughters had a husband that worked there and he asked her to put it together. We were kind of laughing about it because we knew how poor the family had been and that this had been a necessity for them. You put together whatever you had and hoped for the best. If it turned out good, you wrote it down for future reference. When she went on that show she had a whole 3 ring binder full of hot dish recipes. People were buying the books like crazy. If they only knew how they had really come about.

When i was a kid growing up in an Irish catholic family my mom made what she thought was “HUNGARIAN GOULOSH” & I HATED IT BECAUSE I HATED PEPPERS! BUT AS THE YEARS PAST I FOUND MY SELF IN A LITTLE HUNGARIAN city of Pecs! There i met & fell in love with my wife of 22yrs and let me tell you that is not authentic Hungarian Goulosh! (As he said in the beginning) I cant believe that now as an adult I’m loving Hungarian Goulosh!

Slumgolian - I haven't heard that word used in 55 years. It was, just like Kent said, a meal they served in grade school to use up all the leftovers in the cafeteria. It was usually served the last three school days of the month along with peanut butter soup.

My wife was reminiscing about the goulash her mother used to make when she was a kid. Her mother passed away a few years ago so we can't ask her recipe. I told her it was something I could fix for dinner if she could give me an idea which of the many recipes online was close to what she remembered. While searching she found your video and said it was the closest, except for the hot peppers, but she loved that addition. She said her family had a tradition that whoever got a bay leaf in their bowl had to do the dishes. Her mom always put two bay leaves in and they always ended up in my wife's and her brother's bowls. I've got a big pot simmering right now waiting for the noodles to be added and our house smells wonderful. I've got two bay leaves in and our two sons will be joining us for dinner. Thank you for helping keep one of Ruth's traditions alive for my wife and our family.

That looks really good Kent. I’ve got one that a gulps for kids and it too darn simple and kids love it! 2 LBS ground beef, 80/20 Two 8 ounce cans whole tomatoes Two small blocks extra sharp chatter cheese, cubed. 1 box macaroni noodles, large or small. 1/3 cup sugar. Salt and pepper to taiste. After browning off the ground beef, season with S&P. Add your tomato’s. In the mean time, cube your cheese and cook and drain your noodles. Don’t rinse them. Once you meat and tomatoes have come to a simmer , turn them off and add the cubes cheese and noodles and the sugar, stir well. Once it is all mixed put it into aluminum baking pans. Choose your own size. Bake in a 350 degree oven until the cheese has melted and the noodles brown a bit. Kids love this!!! If you make three pans you can freeze them before Baling and have them ready for a quick dinner on a day when it’s cold and you don’t want to cook a lot. Cheers!! Jim

Thank you so much MR Kent and MS Shannon my grandmother used to make a similar goulash brought back some great memories, tastes and smells in the kitchen that is for sure! My family loves everything spicy so I added a couple Jalapenos and an 8oz can of El Pato spicy tomato sauce yummy we loved it they couldn't shovel it in fast enough the sparks were flying off the plate :-) My wife makes a similar soup she calls Italian soup with fideo noodles in it and more chicken broth to keep it soupy It is all good I will be buying one of your cowboy cookbooks for sure probably start with the last one! Gulyás, which is Gulyás in Hungarian, basically means Cowboy :D, because traditionally it was made by the person who guarded the cattle (the Gulyás). The traditional way is to cook it in a big special pot called bogrács on an open fire. I'm pretty sure the American cowboys would love the real traditional Hungarian version as well, even though the Hungarian colleges used to eat it :D. I would try this version as well.

I lived in Germany until I was 12 and my Oma would make goulash all the time, the Hungarian version of course. We then moved to California and I would still make the goulash I grew up with. In 2001, I moved to Dallas-Fort Worth and my friends mother said she was making goulash for dinner and I said “oh wow”, they know goulash way down here? When dinner was served, I was like UHHHHH, what’s this? It’s not goulash 🤣 I had never heard of Cowboy goulash until that very moment and it was love at first taste.
