Hello, wow nice setup I have a mini queen builder maybe a bit smaller than your hive but I’ve never had much success with it, looks perfect for a new nuc or a small swarm catch. Thank you for sharing your vlog with us mate.

Do you still have this hive? Do they not get bound up super fast? Seems like this would be about the equivalent to 2 or 3 langstroth frames. Like a mating nuc.
@sroodtuo3 жыл бұрын
I do, but it’s currently empty. Last fall they got attacked by wasps and didn’t make it through the winter. Basically they made it two seasons. Before there numbers were greatly reduced I had planned to split them, so it took them a year and a half to fill the hive. I started with two mini-frames of brood with queen cells. No queen.

I have 30 hives like that. In May, I start with one box divided into 1/2. Two queens and two cups of bees. After mating (2 weeks) I remove one queen and division. By september there will be 5-6 boxes high. For winter they need only 2 boxes.

I saw that too. You are right. And when they found her later on a further frame the same queen had just ran over. Some queens move around very quickly.
@masonthomas1352 жыл бұрын
Quick question. How do stop eggs (brood) from contaminating the honey? And can you harvest honey from honey comb filled with honey and brood?
@sroodtuo2 жыл бұрын
You wouldn’t want to harvest honey from a frame mixed with brood. That would not be appetizing. You would put a queen excluder in between your brood boxes and a honey super box. That excluder has holes in it large enough for a worker but not large enough for the queen (she’s larger). Now the queen can’t lay in the super and all you get is honey in that box.
@masonthomas1352 жыл бұрын
@@sroodtuo oh thanks 🙏

@@sroodtuo Is the queen only one who lays the brood? Thus keeping her out of it (via queen excluder) insures pure honey?
@sroodtuo2 жыл бұрын
@@masonthomas135 She is. There are circumstances where you can have laying workers though. That produces drone (male) bees. I personally haven’t seen the workers lay in the honey super, but I’m sure it’s possible.

Did you populate this hive with a typical package of bees?
@sroodtuo3 жыл бұрын
No, I added a couple frames with queen cells in early spring and allowed them to rear their own queen. That lasted two years before they got attacked by hornets this last fall and lost the war unfortunately :(. This spring I plan to introduce a typical package.

@lianaspandega10303 жыл бұрын
If u just started then it’s good to start small . Once they multiply he will need bigger one but it’s kind of a starter thing I would think . That’s a super small colony so when they grow in numbers u can put them in bigger one but this is great as beginners bee keeping
@SageandStoneHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Starting THIS small is not ideal. They will outgrow it quickly and take a lot of managing to keep them in the hive.
