Yellow jackets took over my sugar cake and the first box. And bees died in that box

Weve found up here on the east coast ifwe put sugar in the hives before it gets really cold, the bees will haul the sugar out ofthe hive. If we put sugar bricks in they will consume it first leaving their honey below. So after mid December depending on the temps the dry sugar or bricks can be added. And I've had to replace the sugar bricks in January and in February. They prefer the sugar over the capped honey. So last couple years when we get a warm day, around 60, I've put a gallon of warm 1:1 sugar water out to open feed in my front yard. Its helped a lot

Does the pollen get old so they won’t eat it. Have had some that’s 3 years old. They don’t seam to like it.

Yep so many are saying don't use ventilate, they don't understand some of the areas that beekeepers live in. When I didn't run upper ventilation, humidity and rain coupled with the cold in Winter killed all my hives. I have a lot of humidity and rain in the Winter here in Washington state. I'm trying thin burlap this year instead of newspaper, the idea is the bees can access the sugar though the cheap burlap and it should hold a little of any extra syrup from dripping. At least that's the idea. Wet bees in my opinion equals dead bees in the Winter. Glad ya are doing better Dave, Blessed Days...
