Grayson, I used beer in beetle traps instead of oil and it caught 10 times as many beetles compared to oil traps in the same hive. Also since only 2 hives, I got to finish the beer.

Your idea of putting something on top of the hive to keep the sun off of them. It also helps with rain, snow and other things. I is just another thing to take off when checking the hives, but is worth it.

My wife and I want to feed and I believe it's worth it to maintain the best health of the hive but the 25lb bags at Walmart have gone up $3 in the past year and we just can't afford to do heavy feeding on 20 hives

David, have you ever tried peppermint candies (with real peppermint oil) to keep SHB at bay? Bees love to eat it and it’s been great to keep beetles away!

When they get in how well the queen’s laying! No worries I can only imagine all the tech stuff is a challenge

When do I switch from a screened bottom board to a solid one? Or do I need to for winter? I live at boarder of Ohio & WV, near Parkersburg, WV. I haven't been able to find my queen last 3 hive checks, but found 23 queen cells on 1 frame and about 10 in a 2nd. I was afraid to remove all queen cells for fear of no queen. Plus very few stick larvae. Also, is it possible in a dearth for a queen to fly off? Another question, when handling a queen can she fly away if you drop her, and would she fly back to her hive? Just worried about hive!! 🤔🤷😢😐

How do you dissolve that powder in sugar water or keep it distilled so it doesn't clog up the holes?

How do you know if the queen is failing or if she is just not laying as much due to the heat?

Hello, Mr. David Burns. I am Oskar Grechkin, a young beekeeper from upstate NY. I am very passionate about beekeeping, I dream of getting to Cornell to study entomology. I am also very passionate about creating a community of young beekeepers on KZbin. I extremely appreciate all your work, as I learned a ton from your channel. I have a question: can you give me a little shut out during your life? Is it possible for you to invite me for one of your livestreams to just let me share some of my experience. I successfully winterized my bees, I have experience combining week colonies, I successfully grafted queens. Please, 🙏🏽 Thanks for all you do for beekeepers community.

My bees go after hummingbird feeders when they are in dearth. I have bee guards on them, but they still try.

What's your ideas about ventilating the horizontal hives?
@beek Жыл бұрын
I have been thinking but not sure yet
@progers1971 Жыл бұрын
@beek my girls have propolised all the top vents I have inside on the top slats. I thought maybe open the middle door that I have screened over.. nope, they propolised them too! I guess they will just have to beard! Until I or you come up with another idea! Have you done a follow-up to your new horizontal? If so, I might have missed it.

Here is my take: most new bee keepers get bees for the honey. I get bees to keep them alive and triving to pollinate. The honey is icing on the cake. There are times I get very little honey and that's ok. I make sure my girls have what they need over winter tha means their own honey.

I don't agree with making venting from the top of the hive. Bearding is a natural response to hight heat and the bees are propolis everything and I think that the lack of nectar let's the bees know that they need to start sealing up their hive for winter.

Do what works for you. I've never claimed my way is the only way or right way. But where I live, I've tried the above method you mentioned and it didn't work for me, so I had to go a different direction that works great.

Hey David. Does deformed wing virus happen after bees emerge from pupating or during?
@beek Жыл бұрын
Varroa mites transfer viral particles to the larvae. The deformed wings happen in the pupal stage. Bees remain infected into their adult life.
