David... it would be worth mentioning that the lid of the feeder jar should be the flat, one piece type and not the two piece canning lid which has a recessed surface. When placed on the #8 screen, the bees are not able to reach thru the screen and get their proboscis to the holes in the lid. This might cause someone to assume the bees are not accepting any syrup. Try a side by side experiment with two jars on one hive to see if you get the same results.

Hey Dave.. no Dearth here. 1.5 hrs south of you. Have fields planted in a variety of clovers, chicory and alfalfa. And I plant buckwheat every 3 weeks as soon as overnight lows are warm enough. They honey is very sweet, dark with a some what spice after taste.

Thanks for the great video David; this will be my first time trying pollen sub in syrup. Quick question: how do I get the 'chunks' out of the mixture? The pollen sub seems to clump up no matter how hard I stir or shake the jar. Thanks 😊 🐝

I'm just wondering what your views on pH are for syrup. Nectar is acidic where water will provide neutral maybe even alkaline solution. I saw a chap suggesting apple cider vinegar to adjust pH, surely as nectar is the bee's source of vitamin C (which is related to longevity and fertility in insects) ascorbic acid would also be a good additive for winter feed.

David Thanks for the info I put out 4 gallons of 1 to 1 sugar water in a 5 gallon inverted feeder for three days and they have ignored it. I will add nutrients or put it in a top feeder instead. Dearth has started in north Alabama.

Hi David. Looking forward to meeting you at EAS. I am concerned about the syrup leaking out of the jar when the temps warm up causing expansion of air and liquid in the jar and leaking of syrup onto the bee cluster. D Have you had that happen to you?

See you at EAS. I have never had that happen.

What time of day do you observe if your bees are in a dearth? Morning? Afternoon? Evening? Also, how long do you feed them this formula? Till winter? Till spring?

Try to add some essential oils to the mix that will really help with brood and help make your hive more stronger! My bees population explodes when I give them this! Teatree oil Spearmint oil and some Wintergreen oil! They love it!

Does it make a difference what time of day you count the bees
@CaseyBbees
@CaseyBbees Жыл бұрын
Don't really sit there and count your bees buddy, you will absolutely know if you have a dearth the action in front of your hive will drop significantly, if you have a flow they will be shooting out of your hive like a Gatlin gun
@CaseyBbees
@CaseyBbees Жыл бұрын
How many bees do you count within what amount of time determines a dearth? It's not that complicated action vs no action = nectar flow/dearth
@bryanrulz3904

David, how do you feed during a dearth without causing a robbing situation? I would think that since all bees are stressed during this time, it makes it more difficult to avoid robbing.

How far away from the hive were your winter B kind boards? I did beekeeping between 2006 and 2009 and now I've picked it up again this year. I took a class in 2006 but everything was so confusing. For example: The number of sicknesses bees have and all the number of remedies. They pretty much presented each "disease" like they all had an equal chance of happening. And, this is your buffet of solutions. They said you choose what you want based on your own preferences. I chose nothing because it was so confusing. Four of my eight hives actually made it for a few years. I didn't even do basic things like switching the brood boxes in the spring. The point. I've never had an luck with getting bees to either drink or eat anything I put outside the hive OTHER than just pure honey. I've tried putting containers with water out at various distances. And, no luck with bees drinking. Right now, I am trying entrance feeders inside a empty brood box on top of the hives. Why? (Putting out a bird bath isn't an option. My son doesn't follow directions and would get into the bath or throw rocks at it.) 1) I like how it gives the bees more room so they aren't so tightly packed inside. (The room comes from the extra brood box on top with the Mason jar. I'm even trying to put a inner cover on top with an extra, empty box on top of that to be a kind of attic. I'm going to use the 4x4 board method "soon." 2) No bee deaths. 3) I can see the levels of liquid in each Mason Jar. 4) They are easy to fill. I can even put in multiple types of feed and water. I have three entrance feeders inside right now. 5) The Mason Jars aren't very heavy or awkward. 6) I feel like a Maverik when I'm doing something "no one else" is doing exactly how I'm doing it. 7) No worry about robber bees.

Can you feed your bees while doing a apivar treatment ? This is a swarm i caught, I have them built up to two 10 frame deeps and they are doing great. I was going to put a honey super on but did a mite check first and they had 5 mites per 300 bees, alcohol wash.So i started a apivar treatment two weeks ago.My deep box's are full of bees, i don't want them to swarm what should i do? I am new to beekeeping i have only had bees for about two months now. I have been reading a lot and watched you on youtube. Any help would bee great.

You need to wait because the break between nectar and feeding helps trigger the bees to switch to raising the dearth bees rather than the summer bees.
