Glad you like bees and want to have some. Only thing I would change is where the holes are. Should have an entrance even with bottom board. Bees can't drag their dead out like you have it set up. And it's easier for them to come and go. Hope you have good results.
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion and comment! We have made an entrance like that on purpose. They have better protection from yellow jackets, bumblebees, and hornets. In some parts of the world, they only use an entrance like that and the bees are just fine. I see dead bees on the entrance every morning, they seem to have no problem dragging out the dead. But I'm sure every entrance style has its pros and cons. Also, another reason why we went with this style is because it's much easier to make. For new beekeepers, this is a good start.

Not being a beekeeper and knowing nothing about it, I could ask you about a thousand questions, but maybe you wouldn't mind if I settled for three? They're probably stupid, but here goes: Do bees cap cells which are being used to store food, or is it only cells with larvae in them? When bees swarm and fly off, how long would you normally have to capture them before they'd disappear and you lose them? What is a nuke? I really am enjoying you videos, thanks for posting them.
@popquizzz5 жыл бұрын
Ana, can you ask your Dad about the practice of when you get a Nuc or Package and keeping them cooped up for any time more than an hour without really good air movement it is important to put a saturated sponge with water at the bottom of the hive allowing the bees to drink some water to help keep the hive at the proper temperature. I have heard of bees cooking themselves to death because of poor air circulation.
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын

I have a question for your dad. Is beekeeping profitable? and how much money can I make (or loose) per year with 10 hives ?
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
My dad only does beekeeping as a hobby! But It can be very much so profitable for some, really depending on the location, how knowledgable you are, how healthy your bees are and how much time you have to deal with them. It's more profitable to make money from splitting hives and selling bees than it is to sell honey. The going rate for a nucleus in SC is $180! You can split one hive 2 or 3 times per year. Yes, it can be a nice side job, with 10 hives. The way we have our hives set up, one hive can bring up to 3 gallons of honey per year. A quart size jar of honey is about $15 bucks. I'm sure it adds up if you do the math! Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@AnnaKra Thank you Anna for the great exhaustive answer! subscribing to you great channel ...
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
@@simopr09 You're welcome! Also, my dad said, each year is different because the amount of honey you get depends on the weather because the bees don't fly if its raining or cold outside. So, they cannot gather honey then.

Do you shake the left over bees in to the new box or do you take the old box and set in front of the hive and let then move into the new box by then self ?
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Basically, we divide the bees in half. We only take half of the bees with the queen, the rest we leave in the old box, they develop a new queen on their own as long as they have eggs. That way we have two beehives. Its called a split. That's how beekeepers end up with a lot of families to sell, they split the hives so that they are not short on bees for themselves. My dad keeps the old box with the bees. I take the new box with half of the bees to a different property. You're not supposed to buy a beehive full of bees, bees need extra empty frames where they can grow and expand on their own. Once they grow and expand in one beehive you can add the second beehive on top, so that they have more room to bring honey. Otherwise, they can get too crowded and swarm (half of the bees fly away to a nearby tree to find a new nest, this can happen especially in springtime). Splitting beehives in springtime is normal practice for beekeepers to prevent swarming and to sell. I hope this answers your question. I hope I understood you correctly.

They can return, that is true, but not if you get a lot of closed brood too. The new bees don’t remember the old place. Splits are done in a similar way, most of the closed brood is put in a new hive this way you’ll have the new bees even if the older bees decide to go back.
