Nice swarm!! If you do it alone, you can make a bracket, screw it onto bucked, then use n long paint pole and stand on ground to scoop bees in bucket. If you catch any swarm, cage the queen for atleast 30 hours or more, or close off hive totally for more than 30 hours. If you use new frames it is good to put little bit of lemon gras in box or take out a brood frame from other box, those bees will then stay in box.

It was suggested to me before I start keeping honey bees 🐝 to study and learn as much as I’m able for a happy Queen and successful hive. I have learned so much from watching your videos. The gratitude I have for you and your daughter is tremendous. Thank you for teaching us fatal mistakes can be made like losing a Queen. When collecting a swarm is it possible to find and identify the Queen Bee by placing a watercolor marker a bright color (Orange) on her back? Will this help to insure she is in the box? When you shook the branch to collect the swarm I think I saw three sections fall and curious if she might have escaped. It’s grand to see with adding a new Queen the hive became a busy bee hive. I ♥️honey bees 🐝 🐝🐝🐝. Thank you for sharing this information. I’m believing after one more year of study I will be confident to begin keeping bees on my own. I began studying about honey bees in January 2013. Again, thank you 🙏🏼 very much for your time, knowledge, and care of the bees. One final question, “Is it better to build the bee hive boxes or to build them myself?”
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! We are happy to hear that! Yes you can mark the queens if you like, and many beekeepers do so, which will help you find her better. My dad doesn't mark them because he noticed that the queens get sick easily and don't last as long. So he doesn't risk it. The queen was in the box as we pointed out in the video, something has happened to her later. We have two videos on our channel about how we make our beehives with tons of tips and tricks, be sure to check it out. We buy parts and assemble the hives ourselves cheaper that way, building everything from scratch is very time consuming and not ideal for everyone due to not everyone has the tools our the skills to do so. Buying everything pre-assembled can be very expensive for most so we assemble everything ourselves. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)

thanks for taking the time to share this, just captured a swarm yesterday and have em locked up in a very hole filled cardboard box. how long can they go without food after swarming? i lured them here by simply feeding them a little of my coke mixed with homebrew( fermented sugar & yeast , distilled ) they never seemed to get drunk but used to feed here a heap last season/ b4 winter, now spring a swarm turned up yesterday. and i am trying to make sure i don't kill the queen and can transfer safely into a new box with some fresh wax. any help would be the icing on the cake , thanks already Anna and Mr Pavel.

You're very welcome! They have enough food for about 3 days after they swarm out from a hive. We highly recommend feeding them with sugar syrup 1:1 ratio with water! In this video, we explain in more detail our hive and sugar syrup set up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5zHoISnoteYbLM You will need to feed them every day for at least 7 days, or more depending on your location. If there is not enough nectar flow around you will have to keep a close eye on them. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting! :)

so the cardboard box i had tried to lock the swarm in was enough to last 2 days /48 hours b4 the drilled over 20+ holes out looking to swarm ( i had my kids on school holidays watching em every 15 mins lol ) . luckily i asked a lady i work with whos sister has bee's , within 30 mins a lady was here with a box pre painted as mine was arriving raw and transferred what i had locked away into an empty box she had. the amount they had built in the box i locked them in was amazing and i got to taste some success in the way of a little honeycomb left in the cardboard box that wasn't transferred with them, they had built a lot in that empty cardboard box in 2 days . joel rex foster on facebook and the pic of the swarm i caught is public if ya wanna look. i ended up feeding them the night i'd asked at a 2:1 ratio after a lot of googling and worried i'd starved. they seem to be very happy in there new home, busy working. i love eadilble plants and wanted bee's to help me forage more. sorry for the excitement but having a swarm stop here and then catching em all and locking em up with only air holes i was worried with only 1 persons advice that theyd be ok. by the taste of the honey left in the cardboard box theyre better then ok n will be well worked and cared for :)

Great information. Been beekeeping for over 5 years. Have had success catching and being able to catch and have swarms stay put in their new hive box. This year was a different story. Ist swarm we caught took off a day later. Didn't see them leave. Another swarm gets caught a week or so later. This time I close off entrances for over 24 hours. Four days later that one disappears. Five days later we do a hive inspection on the hive that I personally saw swarm two weeks earlier. We find no eggs and no new brood pattern. So we just installed a new queen three days ago. Any idea why we lost two swarms? We debated taking out a frame of brood from another hive. We didn't feel like that would be the best solution. Any suggestions? Thank you

My dad is asking if you guys changed your queens? Switched them out for queens from another bee yard further from yours. Your suppose to change all of your queens every 3 years or so, bees may leave to avoid close related breeding. They don’t want to stay because they want to avoid the close related breeding. Hope this helps. Great question! Or You can take your hives to a different bee-yard so the virgin queens can mate with different drones.
@SimplyGarden5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answer. We haven't switched out queens due to the fact that our hives are only one plus years. We have had a challenge with mites causing us to loose hives every year. The hive that swarmed came out of a hive that was started from a swarm last year. I like the idea of moving any future caught swarms to another bee yard.

Something happened to the queen, my dad said he may have accidentally killed her when he was moving the hive.
@josephwoodall8325 жыл бұрын
Hello Anna. Something interesting has just happened. I went out in my driveway to build some hive bodies and there all over my driveway I saw bees. Probably 2 or 300 of them just hanging out. I had no idea what to do. They must be wild bees because no one any where near me has bees so I assembled a deep set it on a step ladder and drizzled some raw honey on the landing board. Have I come close to the right thing?
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Oh WOW! They were on a tree branch? or just your driveway? My dad thinks its a swarm from someone's bee yard, swarms can fly a long distance. That is great news for you! Free bees! My dad said to scoop the bees up and put most of them inside the beehive and close the top. Let it sit out there for a couple of hours, once all the bees fly inside the hive you can relocate the hive to where you want it.
@josephwoodall8325 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaKra it's not a swarm or at least I don't think it is they are not clustered they are just in my driveway I looked all over for a cluster and couldn't find one. There are no beekeepers within five miles of my home they must be wild bees. Lol I even picked some up and put them on the landing board they still seem to have no interest in the honey. It was just shocking to find them there because I went out there to build bee hives.
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
@@josephwoodall832 Yeah that is very odd, my dad said that swarms can fly a far distance... even further than 5 miles. But it's also possible that those are wild bees. I would put them inside the beehive and see how they react. Also, I would try to find their queen, if possible. Once you get the queen in, all of them should go in. Maybe it's a gift from heaven. Lol. It's possible that they may have lost their queen, if so you may need to buy one locally, they are about $25 or $30 bucks, still cheaper than buying a bee package!

How to make that swarm lure or draw ???
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
We just do it the fast and easy way. By shaking them into a bucket and putting it in a beehive immediately. We close the top immediately and the rest of the bees come inside the beehive on their own, usually within an hour or two. This saves us a lot of time. Many new beekeepers don't have the extras on hand. So we try to film it in a way where you can get the job done with minimal supplies and minimal expense. Have you seen Barnyard Bees channel? This is a great question for him, he is all about that! Check it out, he actually just posted a new video about swarm lure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hICkgnmVhq2pha8

Spray Lemon Grass esential oil on those frames inside of that box .....they go inside quick.I am very curios how come your father doesn't know tricks like this.In Russia many,many years ago they didn;t know about esential oils.But they use to put few fresh plant of mint (pipermint) got them wet, with water, that way they smells far away,and drop them in the box next to the frame.Bees will get inside like crazy.
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
We actually know those tips and tricks. But if the bees get inside the beehive anyway, why use it? Besides, our channel is about affordable beekeeping and tailored towards new beekeepers. When a hive suddenly swarms, new beekeepers may not have all the resources available at hand. People need to know that it will still work without all the other stuff. There are plenty of youtube videos on essential oils. We try to stay simple. This is the most simple way of doing it. I believe we mention that in the video. My dad is traditional I guess, the simpler the better. No need to spend money on essential oils. Thanks for watching and your suggestion.

Is just $3 at Kroger food store and save you a trip up in the tree.I remember teling you to use Lemon grass esential oil a wile ago.Going up in the tree is dangers .Then the lemon grass EO keep them inside( no barbs) ,because it smel like Queen feromonds ,also get them going to work immediately.

Anna set swarm traps baited with old comb and lemon grass oil. I catch several swarms each year using 5 frame box's made out scrap wood like pallets. Just spray on some lemon grass on frames not much they will find it. To dangerous to climb.

Thanks for the tips! We try to film things the old traditional way to let ppl know that it can be done even if they don't have lemon grass on hand or special swarm boxes. Thanks for watching!

It will be easier by putting an old building frame , they like it too much, and poor some syrup on the alveolar cells. It's efficient 100/100
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the suggestion! At least we know if someone doesn't have an extra old frame on hand that it will still work! Like if it's their very first swarm.

I enjoyed watching this video Anna and Pavel. I thought it was interesting too that you used a pickle jar for sugar syrup. I am a new bee keeper here in North Carolina and I live a few miles outside of the town where your pickles were made. Just thought that was interesting. Small world.

Love the videos keep it up!!. I have question. I have many bees crawling around on the ground and the ones is the hive are a buzz.. any thoughts? They just started doing this.
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Crawling on the ground is normal. There could be a few reasons for that. One of the reasons is bees will push sick bees out the hive. Second, when you look inside the beehive it's possible that you may have dropped some young bees. Young bees cannot fly and end up crawling on the floor and eventually die. Third, when bees feel like they are about to die they go outside the beehive. Some of those bees are dying from old age. Unusual buzzing could mean many different things. If the queen is laying eggs, and the bees are flying and bringing nectar than you have nothing to worry about. Thank you for watching! :)

Anna, your Dad is great but I think you should be getting more hands on with your Dad instructing?
@AnnaKra5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I very much so do off camera, I may take forever tho lol, we are trying to deliver value fast and easy so that we are not wasting anyone's time on camera. But it may be a good idea to film a few videos where my dad is guiding me through the process as a new beekeeper. But then also, we don't have a camera guy to film us. Filming only on a tripod can lead to missing the up-close shots. But we love the up-close shots lol so we're working with what we have. Thank you for your suggestion and for taking the time to comment! :)
