it is good to have a veil on when you feed bees in Winter if nothing else but to act as an umbrella LOL I have opened the top of hives on 50-55 degree days they are not flying really but when they see the light from the top being removed, they see it as a chance to take a cleansing flight. And no they do no go very far ! Needless to say I got a golden shower along with my cellphone and everything I had with me. LOL

ROLF. Glad I had mine on yesterday when doing OA dribble. Was nice out and they were flying all around. Tablet nailed a couple times and my veil had some cleansing spots

The problem I see with clipping wings is they don't know they have been clipped and they try to fly and fail. Many times they do not make it back into the hive.

Hi David Watched a few of your vids etc. over the 10 years of my beekeeping. I always appreciate your grounded opinions and thoughts on subjects across the board. I make all my own equipment stands, hives, frames and wax foundation. I use Werré hives with frames not top bar to be able to deal better with today's pests etc. The reasons I started making them years before I had bees get involved, I was in depression and wanted to do something, blah blah blah. I'm 71 now and so glad I chose Werré just for the weight factor in moving / manipulating aspect. However I've found that having all the boxes and frames the same allows for greater flexibility when having to move things around in a colony. Also love the concept that the brood is continually on new frames and comb. I've only found one vid of yours with Werré hives promoted, where your installed a small swarm. Have there been any followup vids? I use a mixture of top and bottom supering as the colony requires. Love to hear your thoughts please. In the UK your live Thurs. Chats are after midnight here. Would it be better to put SHB traps in the center near the cluster for winter? Seeing your comment and 2 live SHBs in one of my hives the other day got me wondering. I've trapped hundreds in the Autumn this year.

Raising queens, why do i need a finishing nuc? Can i just leave them in one nuc untill they are ready to hatch, then move them?

The finishing hive allows you to ensure all your grafts are fed well. If you raise a handful or less in that nuc, it works fine.

Clipping wings is paramount to docking tails on dogs . Just saying ...

Docking a tail is often cosmetic, unless the dog has happy tail and the tail just won't heal from damage. Clipping a queen wing is to help prevent it from swarming beyond several feet from the hive. Similar to clipping wings of livestock poultry to prevent them from flying out of a contained area. But I agree with David there are better methods of swarm control.
