Interesting commentary, as always. I've changed my overwintering practices greatly since I began beekeeping 40 years ago. Today, I overwinter in insulated, single deeps; each with ten frames, and without any upper ventilation. My winter losses diminished and their consumption of stores is minimal. Brood production booms in late winter and early spring. This method is quite a change from the uninsulated, ventilated double deeps which I used to think necessary. As it turns out my previous management practices were working against the bees.

My first year raising bees and the temperature here in Nova Scotia Canada is already 25 Fahrenheit or -4 Celsius. I'll be checking them in about 2-3 days as it is calling for 15Celcsius or 59F. Hoping it will be fine to check on them as it is not going to get that warm again until January thaw. Last I checked they was still alive. Last honey I took was back in June and only 2 frames. I wanted them to have the best chance of surviving the winter, so they still have lots of food and I'll be feeding them as early as I can. Thanks for the videos. They keep me thinking of better ways to improve.👍😊

Last year I put just a frame no foundation in the middle of a 5 frame nuc and the bees used that room to cluster and I think it had a huge benefit. It exploded in the spring!

lol how many hives do you have you must not make profit from bees ? If I were to feed my bees all year long I would be living on the streets 😅 insulate and get ride of that top vent and you want have bees eating so much as well insulated hive bees eat areound 1.5 Pounds of honey a week and a non insulated hive they eat 3.5 pounds I don’t harvest honey if they don’t have enough to make it threw it’s important to leave enough food
